Oak Grove (Union) Cemetery - Vernon Parish, Louisiana Submitted by Jane McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** OAK GROVE CEMETERY (Hornbeck) - Vernon Parish Directions: From US Hwy. 171 in the center of Hornbeck turn east onto LA Hwy. 111 and go approximately 2.8 miles. After crossing several bridges, road curves to the right. At this bend, turn left onto Oak Grove Road. Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church and cemetery can be seen from this location. A sign over the main gate indicates the cemetery was established in 1851. This very large cemetery is well maintained, and divided by a u-shaped driveway which enters on the South, goes to the back fence, turns North to continue along the West fence, and turns East at the North Driveway where it exits the cemetery near the church. The oldest section is in the large center area, with newer sections on the North side of the North driveway and South of the South driveway. There are many old small concrete markers in this older section with only names inscribed. These markers are typical of those used in this area at the turn of the century. As they were made of various mixtures of concrete, many have deteriorated and cannot be read. Others have been replaced with small granite markers, many with only the word "Infant" on the marker. Although a large, new tombstone in the center of the cemetery indicates the first gravesite was for an unknown soldier who died in the home of Johnnie West; however, it is entirely possible that the first burial was actually for an Indian (unmarked near the center of the cemetery). According to an older Hornbeck resident, a grave was being dug during the 1940's to bury an infant when an unmarked grave was accidentally opened. The site was closed, a rock placed to mark the spot, and the infant burial was moved slightly. As no one could remember an Indian being buried here after the cemetery was started, it was assumed he had been buried when the area was part of the old Indian trail, prior to the soldier's death in 1851. Tombstone inscriptions were first copied in April 1979, and recopied by Jane P. McManus in November 1995. The two new sections were copied first as the burials were approached from the Driveway to the fence in each case. The older center section was copied last in zigzag rows, and many of the unreadable inscriptions in this area were verified from the 1979 version. Mrs. Marguerite Rutherford of Hornbeck assisted with the brief history of the church, while local West-Owers family genealogist, Elizabeth Sterling provided a history of the West & Owers families. Any genealogical information not actually on the tombstone is provided in brackets to assist researchers. History The first church on this location was named Mt. Bethel Church, and the first wooden building was used as school during the week and church on weekends. After the first building burned, a second wooden structure was built in 1935. Dicy Snell donated property for the cemetery, and Mr. Fisher Snell donated some old rough lumber. The church eventually changed its name to Union Grove or Oak Grove, but the date is not known. The present brick structure that is used today was built September 1949 by Mr. Francis Joseph Snell (deceased). According to church members, Oak Grove Cemetery was originally a family graveyard with members of the West & Owers family and their extended families being buried here. Each year in October the Owers & West families meet at the church and cemetery for a reunion. The first Hiram Wesley Owers was born on the high seas between England and America in 1791. His parents came from Sussex County, England, and landed in New Orleans where their son grew to manhood. Hiram Owers first homesteaded a tract of land near Lake Charles, and married his first wife Nancy Hickman. They had two children: Reese and Joseph Joab Owers. After the death of his mother and wife, Hiram and the children moved to the area now known as Vernon Parish. Here he met and married his second wife, Martha Miers/Mars, and three children were born: David, Lizzie, and Jonathan Owers. When Hiram Owers died in 1886, he was 95 years old. Carpetbaggers killed his son, Reese near his brother's homestead after the Civil War. Joab Owers married Sarahann West; David Owers married Margania West; Elizabeth Owers married Hiram West; Jonathan Owers married Viney/Vicey Austin; and Lacy Owers married James Chance. The first Johnnie West was born in Ireland in 1812, immigrated to Mississippi where he met and married Dicia Cooper and had two children, Benjamin and Annie West. He then moved to the area now known as Vernon Parish and settled in Oakgrove community where a church, school and sawmill was built and prospered. Six more children were born here: Vicia, Polly, Sarahann, Margania, Willis, and Hiram. It was Johnnie West who started the cemetery in 1851, when he buried a soldier who was passing through the area, and had stopped at the West homestead. This Unknown Soldier was the first gravesite at Oak Grove Cemetery. The second gravesite occurred when he moved the grave of his wife's mother to the new cemetery. Johnnie West died in 1884 at the age of 72 years. His children, Benjamin West married Lizzie Martin; Annie West married Joe Brown; Jonathan Owers married Viney Austin; Pollyann West married James Regan; Willis West married Mary Chance; Sarahann West married Joab Joseph Owers; Margania West married David Owers; and Hiram West married Elizabeth Owers. Thus the West/Owers connection was made and continues throughout the generations with offspring, many who are buried in this large cemetery, along with the two pioneer ancestors, Johnnie West and Hiram Owers.
