Old Anacoco Baptist Church Cemetery - Vernon Parish, Louisiana Submitted by Jane P. McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From the intersection of US Hwy. 171 and LA Hwy. 8 North of Leesville, go 1.7 miles on US Hwy. 171. Turn right (East) at Hawthorne Rd. and continue for almost 1.0 miles to the Old Anacoco Missionary Baptist Church. The large, fenced cemetery is located to the left of the Church with the oldest section separately fenced at the rear. Concrete benches surrounded by flower gardens are behind the sign. The oldest marked burial in the cemetery appears to be for Andrew J. Smart who died in 1865. This burial can be found in the older section at the rear. Tombstone inscriptions were recorded from the front gate to the back in rows by Jane P. McManus, October 1990, and new burials were recorded 17 January 1995. Some new burials noted in local newspapers were not located, but are listed at the end of this listing. HISTORY The Old Anacoco Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1853 by Elder Nathan Hunt Bray Deacon Nathan Smart, and residents in the Prairie Creek & Anacoco Creek area. Later in 1871 when the Vernon Baptist Association was formed from the Sabine Baptist Association in 1871, Elder Bray became its first moderator. Some of the first families in the church were the Smarts, Brays, McAlpins, Winfrees, McGees, Avards, Gandys, Cains, Stephens, Turners, Crafts, and Lamberths. Before the church was built, services were held outside in a clearing or in the homes of members if the weather was bad. Occasionally, a circuit rider would arrive and conduct regular services, but because of the distance involved, and the scarcity of preachers, these visits were not frequent. The circuit-rider would stay for several nights with members of the small congregation, where he and his horse would be fed. Isaac Bray, brother to Elder Bray, constructed the first building in the mid 1840-1850's. This structure was made of logs that had been split in half, notched at both ends, and stacked together. The smooth, flat sides faced the inside of the building. There were no glass windows, but wooden shutters could be opened to let in the light, or closed to keep out the cold and rain. A door at each end of the building also helped circulation during the hot summer months. During the winter, a fireplace (with mud chimney) provided the heat. Seats in the church were made of logs, split and smoothed with axes. Pegs were placed in the sides for legs, and there were no backs. During the services, men sat on one side of the church while the women and children sat on the other side. The same type log (with longer legs) was used for the pulpit. If, on rare occasions, services were conducted at night, homemade tallow candles were used for lights. As in so many of the churches in this area, the building was also used as a school with the same seats, but writing desks had higher legs. By 1901, the old log building was replaced by a 2-story frame structure, with the 2nd floor used by Anacoco Masonic Lodge. The Leesville Leader reported on 18 Jul 1929 that Bill McInnis was repairing the old Anacoco Church and lodge building and found that the heavier timbers were held together by strong wooden pins and the nails of the roof were the old square kind that had big heads and were easy to hit. This building was enlarged several times, and used until the new brick structure was built.
