Pine Island Cemetery is on the right side of the highway, is fenced, and is one of three cemeteries maintained by the Simpson Cemetery Association. Burials were read in zigzag rows, from the front gate on the right to the back. Cemetery was originally copied November, 1988; updated December 1994 by Jane P. McManus, and updated August 2001 by Mary Parker Partain. Genealogical information included in brackets was provided by family members. When Lydia (Parker) Jackson was a young child, she learned of the early Simpson history from her mother, Sarah Ellen (Williamson) Parker, who was a witness in the story told below. Ellen's mother, Ann (Cato) Williamson, was the first known death in the community and the first burial in Pine Island Cemetery. Many of these earlier burials, including Ann's, were marked by large sandstone rocks as that was all that was available at the time. An audio cassette tape of the interview with Lydia Jackson prior to her death that contains this story and others is in the possession of Jane P. McManus, Alexandria, LA. Additional history on the church was provided by Pearl Cooley, Slagle, LA (1993). * * * HISTORY * * * In the early 1860s, Samuel D. Williamson, his wife, Ann (Cato) Williamson, and their four young children left Monroe County, Alabama, and headed West in a wagon to make a new home. By the time they arrived in the area of Rapides Parish (later Vernon Parish), Ann Williamson was very sick. Samuel knew he had to have help, and his only recourse was probably back the way he had just travelled. He parked the wagon, and left his two oldest daughters responsible for the care of their mother and the two younger children. We do not know how long Samuel was gone, but when he finally returned with help it was too late. Ann's condition worsened, and she soon died. During the early days of westward migration, the custom was to bury travelers near the trail where they died. Thus it was that Samuel Williamson buried his beloved wife beside the trail near the small community of Pine Island. There was no money for a tombstone even if one had been available in this wilderness area. Samuel did the best he could and placed a large sandstone rock to mark her grave. Ann (Cato) Williamson became the first burial in that plot of ground called Pine Island Cemetery. Although that rock eroded with the passage of time, it still remains one of many that mark the graves of loved ones in this cemetery. With the death of his wife, Samuel no longer wanted to go West. He built his home near the cemetery, eventually remarried, and raised his children in the Pine Island Community. In a few years, a log church was built near the cemetery to serve the members of the Methodist faith. Some of the earliest families who worshipped in Pine Island Methodist Church were the Williamsons, Brinkleys, Orrs, and Temples. The church burned in later years, and was not rebuilt. The small community of Pine Island continued to grow, and a post office was built in 1890. When the application was submitted to Washington, the town name was rejected because it was already in use elsewhere. Thus the community officially renamed their town Simpson.
