Plunkaway (Burr Ferry) - Vernon Parish Louisiana Submitted by Jane P. McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** In Leesville, take LA Hwy. 8 West to Burr Ferry. Turn South onto LA Hwy. 111, and continue for .1 miles. Turn left immediately onto secondary road, and continue for 1.0 to Plunkaway Cemetery located on the right at the end of the road. A very tall, stately White Oak Tree stands in the center of the fenced burial ground with the oldest burials underneath this tree. There are many small, hand-made concrete markers in this cemetery -- some inscribed UNKNOWN, others inscribed with a name, and still others with a name and date. Most of these older markers have eroded over time, and those that were extremely difficult to read were compared to the inscriptions which were recorded in 1976 for clarification. Additional genealogical notes, not actually on the tombstone, are included in brackets and were supplied from records of the author. Tombstone inscriptions were recorded from inside the front gate to the immediate far right side, front to back, in zigzag rows by Jane P. McManus 17 January 1995. Submitted by Jane McManus, 12 February 2000 (jane_mcmanus@yahoo.com). In the older section of the cemetery (center), the rows are extremely irregular and in many cases were read as double rows. A legend persists among the residents of Burr Ferry as to how the cemetery actually got its unique name. It seems in the mid 1800's, a settler in the area told his family that when he died they could just "plunk me away" under the large white oak tree on top of the hill nearby. After his burial, the cemetery was always referred to as "Plunkaway."
