Prewitts Chapel Cemetery, Vernon Parish Louisiana Submitted by Jane P. McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** PREWITTS CHAPEL CEMETERY - Vernon Parish From US Hwy. 171 in center of Hornbeck, turn east at caution light onto Pt. Arthur Road. Go .4 miles and turn left onto Williams Road (there are 2 signs on the right side of the road that read: Plainview Community & Prewitts Chapel Baptist Church). Williams Road has many turns and twists, but stay on the main road for approximately 2.2 miles. Turn right onto Prewitt's Chapel Road, and go .6 miles to the church sign. Turn right and go to the end of the lane. This very large cemetery is located on the right side of the church, and is surrounded by a chain-link fence. A large new section has been added to the west with room for twice the number of burials currently interred. A sign over the walk-in gate near the church indicates the cemetery was established in 1869. "Show me the manner in which a Nation or a community cares for its dead, and I will measure with mathematic exactness the tender sympathies of its people, their respect for the law of the land, and their loyalties to high ideals. Gladstone." Obviously this cemetery is tended by caring individuals. A large display case under glass near the center front diagrams the layout of burials in the cemetery with last names of burials entered at each location. A small American flag indicates a military marker. Several small wooden, hand-lettered signs are located throughout the cemetery at individual burials that provide a brief historical comment about that person or family. This recognition was obviously done by someone who cared a great deal about the family, and did not want the facts to be lost. On the south side, a new paved driveway enters and curves around to the north fence and gate that leads to the new section. The few tombstone inscriptions to the south of that driveway are recorded separately at the end of this listing. All other burials were recorded from just inside this front gate to the left in zigzag rows from front to back. History of the church was provided by Mrs. Pearl Snell & Yvonne Moore, Hornbeck LA (1995). Genealogical information added in brackets was provided from the records of Mrs. Elizabeth Sterling of Hornbeck (1996). Inscriptions recorded by Jane P. McManus 7 Dec 1995 and updated on 23 May 1996. HISTORY Prewitt's Chapel was organized in 1869 with 30 members. Some of the early pastors were Z.Corley, G.W. Stringer, A.J. Weldon, B.O. Owens, J. Prewitt, M.W. Lilley, J.D. Wilson, and W.J. Averitt. In 1871 Willis West, J.H. Chance, and Josiah Isiah Brown were elected delegates to the District Assoc-iational meeting. Although Josiah Brown was no longer affiliated with the church body by June 1874, his family remained and participated in church activities even to the present day. A young daughter of Josiah Brown & Tabitha Ann West, was the first burial in this cemetery in 1893. The first building at this location was a small one-room log house that was used as a school during the week and church on weekends and special days. The original building did not have log blocks to make it a raised house as is customary in this area, but instead was built right on the ground. The cornerstone was supplied by Josiah Brown & Johnnie West, early settlers of the community of Hornbeck. Gilbert Brown, son of Josiah Brown and Tabitha West, was born in 1852, and he would often tell how the young children would lay on the ground before preaching service and try to call the "dooder bugs" from the ground. Pearl Brown, a granddaughter of Josiah and Tabitha, was born in 1894, and she attended Prewitt's Chapel all her life. Their home was some distance from the church, and she often walked to services. In fact, the last time she walked the four miles from her present home, she was 89 years old. At the time of my interview, Pearl was 101 years old, in excellent health, and lived alone in Hornbeck. She cooks and grows many of the vegetables that she loves to eat. In the 125 years since the church was organized, there have been four church houses erected at this location. The current structure was built in 1942. Row 1: [South to North] Brown, Rosie Lee - 14 May 1915 / 26 Aug 1993 Mother Wife of Roy H.
