Silver Creek - Vernon Parish Louisiana Submitted by Jane P. McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From LA Hwy. 8 in Leesville, turn North onto LA Hwy.117 toward Kurthwood and go approximately 8.0 miles. Turn East (right) onto Silver Creek Rd. (dirt road), and continue for approximately 1.5 miles to cemetery that is located on the right side of the road, next Silver Creek Baptist Church. Gene O. Stephens provided a brief history of the cemetery, along with genealogical information on many of the burials. Other information in brackets was provided by the recorder. Data not actually on the tombstone is included in brackets. The researcher should verify all bracketed information. Burial information was recorded from the rear of the cemetery to the front in rows, from the left rear fence near the Church, to the right fence (the woods). Tombstone Inscriptions copied by Jane P. McManus, 21 November 1994 and submitted 5 February 2000 (janemcmanus@gateway.net). Silver Creek Baptist Church was organized in December 1923 by charter members: M. D. Laurence, Monroe Young, A. W. Young, J. F. Laurence, Mary Turner, Jane West, Lizzie Laurence, Martha Young, Fleta West, Emma Laurence, Emily Laurence, Maggie West, and Minnie Young. Pastor of the small group was J. F. Laurence, and meetings were held in a building that was used for the Indian Creek School. The cemetery is famous as the final resting place for Vernon Parish's "Last Boy in Gray," William Robert Turner, who lived to be 102 years old. Tribute was paid to "Uncle Bill" by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Pickett Chapter #1539, Vernon Parish, in 1978. The story of his early life is one that could apply to many of the early settlers in this area . . . those who migrated here from Eastern States in search of the perfect homestead, those who embraced the Southern cause and returned to thrill later generations with their stories, those who raised families and somehow survived the hardships of Reconstruction and a later Depression, those who watched their children and grandchildren scatter to all parts of the world, and those who spent their last days on the porch of the old homestead. All of us can relate our grandparents to the timeframe in which Uncle Bill lived; therefore, his story is presented here for all to enjoy. * * * * * History of Silver Creek Cemetery by Gene Stephens Sometime shortly after 1850, two young Stephens men, Thomas and Ephraim, came to Rapides Parish, Louisiana, from Greene County, Mississippi, and settled on and near the site that is presently the location of Silver Creek Cemetery. Ephraim settled the land where the cemetery is located, and Thomas settled about 1-1 / 2 miles away. Years later, the dates are unknown, their mother, Elizabeth Stephens, came to visit them. She came by steamboat up the Red River to Cotile Landing (present day Boyce) where the two sons in an ox-wagon met her. They proceeded to bring her back to their homes in Rapides Parish to visit. During her visit, Elizabeth Stephens became very ill, and she and her sons and their families knew that she was dying. When asked where she preferred to be buried, she chose a spot in a nearby field where an apple tree was growing. When she expired, she was taken to that spot and laid to rest underneath the apple tree. Although the date of her burial is unknown, this was the first grave placed in what is now known as Silver Creek Cemetery. Two old stones, one at the head and the other at the foot, mark her grave site. A permanent new marker has been placed at her grave to commemorate this event in the history of our area. * * * WILLIAM ROBERT TURNER * * * William A. Turner (Grandson) captures the nostalgia of the early days "Uncle Bill" Turner, last Vernon Parish "Boy in Gray," a pioneering patriarch of the Deep South, was born in Holmes County, Florida. In the spring of 1852, the 6-year old was caught up in the excitement of moving from his birthplace to a far away land called Texas. Some of the older Turners who had been soldiers in the west reported its charms, and the family decided to move. But when they reached Louisiana, the ladies of the caravan fell in love with the land they were passing through and prevailed on the men to stop the covered wagons. Louisiana worked its spell on everyone here that stayed. The 450-mile journey had taken three months from loading to unloading in what is now Allen Parish. There in a lovely graveyard lies the remains of Uncle Bill's father, William Wayne Turner, and grandfather, Stephen Turner, his brothers and cousins, aunts and uncles, farmers cattlemen, hunters and loggers. Under their firm hand, Uncle Bill learned to shoot, ride, to plow, to butcher, to read the signs of woodlands, to tan hides, blacksmith, carpenter, split rails, rive boards, build chimneys, herd cattle, sheep, goats, to master the chores of running a homestead. Schooling came slow, but with time Uncle Bill learned to read, cipher, and write. But his real joy was listening to his soldier uncles and cousins talk of exploits and battles, Gen. Andy "By Gawd" Jackson was a favorite, along with Gen. Zachary Taylor, who had battled with Seminoles in Florida. Several Turners had served under Col. Taylor in Fort Jessup, Louisiana, in Florida, and along the Rio Grande. When in 1861, the Southland seceded, this was regretted by many of the Turners, but delighted 16-year old William Robert. Not that he had anything against Yankees then, but the Turner tradition, as he understood it, required his presence where the action was. "Pap," as he was later called, enlisted in the CSA and was assigned to the Eighth West Louisiana Cavalry. Much to his delight this unit was under Gen. Richard "Dick" Taylor, only son of Gen. Zachary Taylor. President Jefferson Davis was a brother-in-law to Dick Taylor, and, to cap it all off, young Gen. Taylor had been recommended for a general commission by none other than Gen. T. J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Pap was with Gen. Taylor at the Battle of Sabine Crossroads (Mansfield) where he saw Gen. Moulton killed, where 900 (North & South) were killed, 4,000 men wounded, 2600 missing. The Eighth had ridden endless hours of saddle time keeping vigil for "Blue Birds." Then, too, Pap was at Pleasant Hill. In "the last war between gentlemen" (Sir Winston Churchill), Pap always allowed the enemy two kinds of soldiers: Northern Soldiers & Yankees. Pap had a respect and admiration for the farmer, a sense of brotherhood. At night they would swap tobacco for food and clothing. In daylight the killing was nothing personal. "From a gun sight you couldn't tell the difference between a Yankee and a Northern Soldier." A Yankee was "a uniformed man who knew everything knowable, a type of pigheaded intelligence that produced a regular demon when he had you out-numbered more than ten to one." Pap quite despised Yankees in 1948. No Yankee was offered a morsel of his grub or tobacco unless he was wounded or "came down off his high horse." Pap once told me that the nearest he came to getting killed was one night when he had gone without food for three days. Shivering from the biting cold, he had come upon this southern farmer's pigeons in a roost. He helped himself. The farmer had other ideas, and his rifle ball clipped Pap's hat. Several times Pap told me of a Northern soldier he had helped capture on at least three separate occasions. This soldier was lanky, always hungry, and ever ready to chew your tobacco. He was such a likable "cuss," that after a few days they'd turn him loose, having nothing to feed him. He'd make it back to his own lines, fight again, and be recaptured. Pap said, "The last time we took him, a year had passed, and the first thing he said to me, 'Bill how about a chew of your tobacco,' and durn me if I didn't give him my last chew." With the fall of Vicksburg and Gettysburg, hope grew dim. Battles would still be fought and won, but defeat was only a matter of time. Some men had sworn never to go home, if the South lost. Many lived up to their word. Some went to South America, some to Australia. Pap headed home, riding a ragged horse, and looking pretty ragged himself. He was 20 years old, and camped ten miles North of Leesville, where trails crossed, one from Lake Charles on up to Natchitoches, one from Texas that led to Boyce and Alexandria. Sometime within the next few years this property would become his homestead of 160 acres, where he would hang up his guns and spurs. Pap married Mary Weeks, then 16, oldest daughter of Benjamin F. Weeks & Lydia Garland, in August 1865. Settling down came hard for him as he liked getting with the boys. In after years he attended many soldier reunions. He could ride, drink and shoot with the best. Grandma didn't always agree with Pap and told him so, but the hell raiser that he was, she loved him and he [loved] her over 65 years. Five of their six children grew to adulthood. Over the years they saw wagon trains rolling. Circuit riders rode to spread the gospel, always with a stopover at the Turners. No man, preacher or desperado was turned away hungry. Blue-eyed and short of stature, Pap had an iron will and didn't miss much. He jumped a 5-foot fence at 80. He revered the land. How sheer his delight when he beat my father and [other] men in a card game. A fallen chimney, a water well and long-ago planted cedars still mark the old site whose mission is completed, a haven, a refuge, a landmark, a home. Dora M. Marshall (Granddaughter) offers: Mother, his third daughter, died before I was three. I lived with him from 1903 to December 1921. When grandpa went to school, the term was only three months a year. He finished only the third grade, with an education equal to today's 7th or 8th grades. He always read and kept up on events. Grandpa loved to dance and play the violin. In 1934 he fell and broke his hip. The doctor said he probably would never walk again. But the first time he was left by himself he got up and went from his bed to the fireplace. (He who limps, walks). Never would he stay in bed anymore. He picked cotton on his 98th birthday, as he farmed till just a few years prior to his death. He read without glasses though he became hard of hearing. He'd have salt in his corn, only if he had no sweet milk to eat it with. A grandson now farms his land. Grandpa never did unite with a denomination but attended a church regularly until he couldn't drive his car. He read his Bible from cover to cover seven times. Ruby Raines (Great-granddaughter) remembers: When Mary, his wife, died in 1931, Grandmother West moved from our house back to his place to take care of him. Each year I would spend part of my summer there. I remember him working in the fields, repairing log fences and tending cattle in the barn. Two years later his vision grew poor and he walked with a cane. Then he would pass pleasant hours playing solitaire and talking with relatives and neighbors on the verandah. He wore a neatly trimmed mustache. With him, I always associated all-type guns, a fiddle his brother made, and the old grandfather calendar clock and chimes. He was a respected hard workingman who survived the Civil War, the loss of slaves, the Depression, and yes, a robbery or two. Kim Gibson (Great-granddaughter) tells of the family: Grandpa Turner left 17 grandchildren. When his daughter, my maternal grandmother, died in 1961 at 93, she alone left 124 surviving in four generations, all living today. I visited Grandpa Turner's log house three years ago and only part of it still stood. Across the front of his home was a long verandah where he spent many hours sitting in one of the ladder-back chairs basking in the sun. That is where I last saw him in 1947, enjoying the warm sun, at peace with himself and the world. * * * * * Row 1: Bolton, John - [no dates] [son of Will Bolton & Leora Hunt] Daddy Bolton, Ruby Estelle Crumpler - 12 Jan 1917 / 13 May 1991 Mother [daughter of William H.
