Walnut Hill Cemetery - Vernon Parish Submitted by Jane P. McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Direction: From Leesville, take LA Hwy. 28 East toward Alexandria for approximately 12 miles (from Alexandria the distance is 34 miles). At the junction of LA Hwy. 121, turn left (north) for 2.3 miles. At sign "Welcome to the Pentecostal Church at Walnut Hill," turn left (west) again and go .2 miles to the church. Although not affiliated with this church, Walnut Hill Cemetery is located to the immediate right of the Pentecostal church. A hurricane fence surrounds the well-maintained burial ground. Layout of the cemetery is detailed on a sign just inside the front entrance, and burials are listed in alphabetical order for easy location. Tombstone inscriptions were recorded from the main gate in zigzag rows, as much as possible, from the road to the woods. Older concrete markers that had eroded or were difficult to read were verified by use of the original publication done in 1970's. Information in brackets was not included on the tombstones, and should be verified before used as a clue for further research. All inscriptions and dates were re-recorded by Jane Parker McManus, March 1994 and updated September 1995. Submitted on 11 February 2001. History The community of Walnut Hill, located in the western section of Rapides Parish, was a natural stopping point on the trail from the eastern part of the state to the border of Texas. An inn where travelers could rest, and a small store where they could restock supplies was located nearby. As early as 1848, a gristmill and post office existed in the area, and residents were fortunate to have Dr. Collins to attend their medical needs. Early settlers in Walnut Hill were the Bagents, Bryant, Calhoun, Collins, Crager, Crumpler, Garland, Groves, Hagan, Hall, Holton, Knight, Martin, Mayo, Nash, Owens, Sweat, Turner, Weeks, & Wise families. On 30 March 1871, Vernon Parish was created out of the older Rapides Parish, and many people assumed Walnut Hill as the largest settlement in the area would be named parish seat. When Leesville was selected for this honor, the economic boom in Walnut Hill began to decline and the community eventually ceased to exist. On 10 November 1873, the post office in Walnut Hill was re-established in the new parish with Jesse E. Collins as postmaster. William A. Holton took over on 3 April 1876. Delivery of the mail in Walnut Hill was discontinued 3 October 1979 for approximately two months. Other postmasters who served were: Samuel C. Sweat (1879), Samuel Roberts (1880), Thomas H. Bedsole (1885), James H. Hagan (1891), John Ford and James Durrough (1892), John W. Burns (1893), Thomas S. Franklin (1895), Walker F. Holton (1896), William H. Weeks (1897), & Robert A. Dennis (1900). By August 1902 the mail was discontinued again and families had to travel to Leesville for pickup. This soon proved to be inconvenient, and in April 1903 the post office was again re-established and Henry C. Dennis assumed the duties of postmaster. He was followed by John W. Johnson & William J. Boyd Jr. (1909), Edward J. Morrison (1910), Daniel M. Holton (1911), James P. Bowman Jr. (1922), & Fannie M. Parker (1925). The post office was officially closed in November 1925 and thereafter; mail was picked up at the Slagle office. On 23 June 1867, the Walnut Hill Baptist Church was organized in the community. At the first meeting of the church J. E. Melton was pastor and James Groves was elected secretary. Groves served as secretary of the church from 1867 until 10 June 1876, when W. D. Holton began his term. Early members were Elizabeth Bass, Joseph Calhoun, Sarah Calhoun, C. D. Collins, James Groves, Nancy Groves, W. D. Holton, Elizabeth Hunt, Henry Hunt, Andrew McAllen, James McAllen, William McAllen, Leonard C. Sweat, Mary Sweat, B. F. Weeks. Shortly after its organization, John Bolton became pastor to be replaced by Barney Owens who served the church for many years. On 16 October 1871, several churches in the area (including Walnut Hill) petitioned the Sabine Baptist Association to establish a new Vernon Baptist Association. This new association was bounded on the north by the Sabine Baptist Association, on the west by the Sabine River, on the South by the Calcasieu Association, and on the East by the Red River. In the 1870's, one of the church members died, and was buried on the property owned by the N. H. Bray Masonic Lodge No. 208. The lodge later donated that property to the Walnut Hill Cemetery Association. Although the church body no longer exists, the cemetery is in use today. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Memorial marker near the sign at front of cemetery) In memory of: Watson, James D. - died 24 Apr 1947, age 65 years Brother Whistine, Josephine - died 11 Nov 1952, age 77 years Mother Whistine, Harles - 23 Sep 1916 / 4 Aug 1943 Son -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Row 1: [front to back] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weeks, A.
