Time of service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 9, 2003 at Prewitt Chapel in Hornbeck, LA with Rev. James Corkran and Rev. James Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Prewitts Chapel Cemetery in Hornbeck, LA. Born in Hornbeck, Melton had lived in the Lake Charles area for 57 years. He was a member of the 1st Baptist Church of Moss Bluff and the Terry Stanley Sunday School Class, member of the Mason Lodge F&AM 462, member of the Shriners and Past Master of Masonic Lodge F&AM 462. He was a US WWII vet of the US Navy in May 1944 to Feb 1946 aboard the USS Logan. He worked as a Lineman Supervisor for Gulf States Utilities for 40 years. He was also a graduate of Hornbeck High School. He was preceded in death by father and mother, Riley M. Byrd and Sarah Ann Wooley Byrd; brother Raymond Byrd; and one sister Verlene Byrd. Survivors include wife Floy Sneed Byrd of Lake Charles; 3 sons, William David Byrd and wife Sandra of Lake Charles, Riley Leon Byrd and wife Marcy of Sulphur, LA, Larry Byrd and wife Laura of Moss Bluff, LA; one daughter, Carolyn Corkran and husband Rev. James Corkran of Nederland, TX; 2 brothers, Eunice Byrd and wife Daisy of Westlake, LA, Donnell Byrd and wife Bonnie of Shreveport, LA; one sister, Lillie Behan Leach and husband David of Shreveport, LA; 9 grandchildren, Heather Byrd, Ada Sparks, Nicki Mettz, Shelly King, Josh Byrd, Ben Byrd, Paul Byrd, Quentin Byrd, Quincy Byrd; and 12 great grandchildren, Adelynn, Alaina, Kamille, Daniel, Jaeb, Naomi, Madison, Merdith, Camryn, Kenton, Krystiana and Kaden. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials to be made to First Baptist Church Tape Ministry for Shut-Ins and Prewitts Chapel Cemetery Fund.
