Self, 95 year old Civil War veteran and life-long resident of Vernon Parish, died at the family residence in Leesville at 6:15 o'clock Sunday morning, which marks the passing of another member of the fast thinning rank of Confederate veterans in Vernon Parish. The deceased was one of the oldest native pioneer citizens of this section of the country, having been reared in the Good Hope community 12 miles west of Anacoco, and was a member of one of the very first families that came to this section long before the parish of Vernon was established. He left the home community and his home to serve in the cause of the confederacy, and on his return at the close of the war was married to Miss Celia Dixon, also a member of one of the few first pioneering families of this section. They lived in the Good Hope community for many years, where they reared a large family. Mrs. Self preceded her husband in death by about 18 months. Funeral services were held at the Good Hope Church at 11 o'clock Monday morning, following a short military service at the home earlier in the morning. The funeral and burial services were conducted by Droddy-Cain Post, American Legion, under the direction of Rev. V.A. Hammond, post commander, who also delivered the funeral message at the church. The deceased is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Q.K. Foster, of Anacoco, Mrs. B.J. Glasscock, Mrs. W.L. Stanton, Mrs. W.L. Lucky, all of Leesville; two sons, S.A. Self and Abel D. Self, also of Leesville. Also surviving are a large number of other relatives and many friends, whom the Leader joins in extending sincere sympathies to the bereaved family.
