Stanly Vernon Baptist Association Records Alexandria LA - 1897 In Memory of Mrs. Elizabeth J. Stanly Died, at her residence in Leesville, Vernon parish, LA at 7:15 o’clock Saturday morning, February 13, 1897, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Stanly, wife of M.H. Stanly, aged 71 years, 4 months and 1 day. She was born October 12, 1826, in Henry county, Alabama. Her parents moved from thence to Walton county, Florida, in 1830, where she grew to womanhood, and was married to M.H. Stanly by her uncle, Alex. Turner, J.P., on December 3, 1846. Was baptized by Eld. David Gidding, a Missionary Baptist minister, together with her husband, and united with the Home Spring Baptist church, where their membership remained until they removed to then Rapide [sic] now Vernon parish, LA, when they united with the Antioch church; it having dissolved or died during the civil war, when the Casto [Castor] church was constituted in lieu thereof they united with same, and where their membership still remained until her decease. Her remains were interred in the Casto graveyard on February 14, 1897, where an appropriate slab marks the resting place of her mortal body. She lived a consistent Christian and faithful member of the church 43 years and 4 months. She celebrated her golden wedding a little over two months before her decease having been married 50 years, 2 months and 10 days. As to her Christian graces, a description would be only an attempt, as those who knew her best can testify. She leaves a loving and devoted husband, four sons and five daughters, besides a host of friends and relatives, to mourn her death. The funeral services were conducted by Eld. W.H. Cain, Moderator of Vernon Missionary Baptist Association, in the presence of a large concourse of spectators. To the sorrowing family, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy. If our aims are fixed aright, A sacred hope is given, Though here our prospects end in night, We’ll meet again in heaven. Then let us form those born above, Which time ne’er dissever, Since, parting in a Saviour’s love, We part to meet forever. M.H. Stanly
