All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** The following obituary was sent to me by the late Jeanette Heard of Leesville, dated 7/17/1993. She found it among her mother's things. Jeanette was the great-granddaughter of G.W. Westmoreland. He was my great-great-grandfather. No source or date was given on the clipping. It was probably from the LEESVILLE LEADER, July 1906. Submitted by Belford E. Carver Hammond, LA Date: March 5, 2002 To the memory of Brother G.W. Westmoreland: Bro. Westmoreland was born July 4, 1832, and died July 17, 1906, aged 74 years and 13 days. He joined the Missionary Baptist church in early life, and continued in the same until his death. He was married to Miss Adaline J. Brown December 18, 1855. They lived together about ten years, when she was called to her eternal home. There were born to this union five children. Then on April 28 he was married to Miss Minerva C. Brabham, and to this union were born five children. Five of his children have preceded him to the other shore. He leaves a companion, five children, fifty-five grand children, and seven great grand children and has nine grand children and seven great grand children dead. Total number of descendants, eighty-seven. Bro. Westmoreland was a faithful soldier during the Civil War. He was a good citizen, a kind, affectionate husband and father. He was a man of strong convictions and fearlessly expressed his views on any subject he thought right. During the last years of his life he became more faithful and consecrated to church work and during his last illness seemed very patient. He selected the place for his grave and is buried there, near the church he loved so well. He was brave to the last and said he did not fear death, but was ready to go and told his young friends to live for Jesus Christ. We have lost one of the best workers in the Pinehill church. However, God's will be done. Amen. W.H. Cain, Pastor At the Washington Parish Court House, Franklinton, LA, there is a large veterns memorial.
