All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Succession - 1878 State of Louisiana Parish of Vernon This contract of agreement made and entered into by the major heirs, to the succession of Stephan Grant (deceased) and Mrs. Catharine Grant (widow of Stephen Grant) acting for herself and the minor heirs of said succession her natural children, witnesseth, that the undersigned major heirs to the succession of Stephen Grant (decsd) do agree that Mrs. Catharine Grant and her four minor children, Stephen N. Grant, Susanna A. Grant, Richard L. Grant, and Franklin O. Grant (of whom she is the natural tutrix) shall receive from the said succession, the following described property (to wit) one hundred head of average cattle, branded thus, [ brand shown ] and marked with a crop and under-bit in the right ear, and a swallowfork and underbit in the left ear. Six (6) head of horses, five (5) of which are branded as before mentioned and one thus (CC) the one half (1/2) of the hogs and the one [unreadable] of the sheep now on and attached to the place which was the residence of Stephen Grant (decsd) together with said place or home with all the buildings and improvements thereto belonging, including one ox wagon. All the farming utensils, kitchen, and, household furniture, and [unreadable line] and one (1) yoke of oxen to have and to hold as their portion or share of the said succession. The peaceable possession of which we the undersigned heirs do hereby guarantee unto them, free from all claims, debts, mortgages, or incumbrance [sic] whatsoever, We do further agree that the brand and mark above described shall be the separate mark and brand of Stephen N. Grant to be used hereafter by him in marking and branding his stock. Now the conditions to this settlement and agreement are such that there shall be no suit-at-law, or other disturbance with or between the heirs to the succession concerning the same. Nor shall the children of Mrs. Catharine Grant by her first husband, Josiah Tinsley, heir or [unreadable words] part or portion of the property increase arising wherefrom [unreadable words] of Mrs. Catharine Grant, the whole of the above described property together with all the increase that may accrue thereto, or arise therefrom shall [unreadable word] to the above named minors. And now comes Mrs. Catharine Grant and acting for herself and her four minor children named as before mentioned does agree to and accept the above settlement in all its parts and stipulations and in the presence of Thomas Richardson and John F. Bolton together with the other parties to this agreement (all of whom are residents of Vernon Parish, State of Louisiana) signed their names hereto on this the 18th day of June A.D. 1878.
