Turnipseed, Clerk, Summit, Pike Co., Miss MINUTES The Bogue Chitto Baptist Association met with the Bogue Chitto Baptist Church, Saturday before the first Sab- bath in October, 1876. The hour for work having arrived, the delegates and people assembled in the house. After singing the 215th hymn, prayer was offered by Bro. Shilling. In the absence of Elder L. J. Everett, who was appointed to preach the Introductory, Elder E. M. Shilling, his alternate preached from the 12th chapter and 28th verse of Hebrews. Intermission ten minutes. After intermission delegates assembled in the house. Sang 689th hymn. Prayer by Elder J. L. Chandler. Elder Chandler was requested by the Moderator to preach at the stand outside. Brethern S. C. Walker and J. G. Legget were appointed reading clerks. Brethren D. C. Walker and B. F. Ellzey were appointed a Committee on Finance. Roll of churches called by the Moderator. Letters presented and read. Statistics recorded by the Clerk. Proceeded to the election of officers for the ensuing year; brethren S. M. Simmons and W. G. Breeland acting as tellers. Elder C. F. Crawford was chosen Moderator; James A. Jen- kins, Treasurer; and B. S. Turnipseed, Clerk. The Moderator declared the Association organized for business. Visiting ministers invited to seats. Appointed committees. Brethren Z.E.P. Williams, W. D. Coney, S. M. Simmons; Elder R. J. Boone and Bro. J. W. Thomas were appointed to arrange preaching during the Association. Elder B. A. Crawford, brethren D. C. Walker and B. S. Turnipseed were appointed on Abstracts. A supplementary letter from Friendship Church, asking counsel respecting the titles of their church property, was received, and, on motion, was taken up and referred to the following committee: James A. Jenkins, D. C. Walker and B. S. Turnipseed. Letters for admittance called for. One presented by Elder S. S. Relyea from McComb City Baptist Church. Being found orthodox and sound in faith, was received as a member of this body. Hand of fellowship extended to her messengers by the Moderator. Correspondence called for. Letter and minutes were received from Pearl River Asso- ciation by her messengers, Elders Joseph E. Pounds and J. L. Chandler. Letter and minutes from West Pearl River Association by her messengers, R. M. C. Duncan and C. A. Boothe. Minutes containing the letter of correspondence from Mis- sissippi Association by Bro. J. A. Jenkins. Minutes containing the letter of correspondence from Fair River Association by Elder E. C. Eager. Hand of fellowship extended to the messengers that were present by the Moderator. Correspondence arranged with Pearl River - B. A. Crawford, W. J. Foretnberry and E. M. Shilling, messengers; Elder Shilling to write. With West Pearl - William Shilling, M. J. Pitman, Elder C. F. Crawford, messengers; Elder Shilling to write. Mississippi - Elder B. A. Crawford and B. S. Turnipseed, messengers; Turnipseed to write. Fair River - S. C. Walker, B. A. Crawford, messengers; Walker to write. Eastern La. - elders C. F. Crawford and William Shilling, messengers; B. A. Crawford to write. Union - S. C. Walker and B. S. Turnipseed, messengers; Walker to write. The Committee on Preaching made the following report: Your Committee on Preaching beg leave to submit the following: 1st Elder O. L. Johnson to introduce the service by singing and pray- er at 10:30 A.M., Sabbath morning. 2d. Elder S. S. Relyea to follow in a sermon on Home Missions; then to take up a collection immediately afterward. Intermission thirty minutes. 3d. Elder E. C. Eager to preach, and close the evening services. Z.E.P. Williams, Ch’m. Granted leave of absence to the following brethren: Elder S.S. Relyea, J. G. Legget, Elder B. M. Bankston, L. Bree- land, R. Smith, T. L. McGehee and W. D. Holmes. Adjourned till Monday morning, 9 o’clock. The sabbath exercises were conducted in accordance with the arrangement of the Preaching Committee. Elder Relyea preached at 11 o’clock from part of the 13th verse, 19th chapter of Luke: "Occupy till I come;" and part of 8th verse, 10th chapter Matthew: "Freely ye have received, freely give." Collection amounted to $17.50. Elder Eager preached in the evening from 130th verse of 119th Psalm: "The entrance of Thy words giveth light." Subject: The Bible. Monday, Oct. 2, 1876 Met pursuant to adjournment. Sang hymn 631. Prayer by Elder W. J. Foretnberry. Called the roll. Delegates present answered to their names. Absentees marked. Granted dismission to Pleasant Hill Church. Petitions from Spring Creek, Terry’s Creek, Line Creek and Mt. Nebo, asking for the next meeting of the Associa- tion, was acted upon. Resulted in favor of Spring Creek Church, seven miles south-east of Osyka, Missl, situated in Tangipaho Parish, La. The committee on Preaching made the following report which was adopted, and Committee discharged: 1st. Elder A. Goss to open service at the stand with hymn and prayer. 2d. Elder O. L. Johnson to preach, and close the service. Z.E.P. Williams, Ch’m. On motion, Elder William Shilling was appointed to preach the Introductory Sermon at our next meeting, and Elder B. A. Crawford his alternate. On motion, the Moderator, Elder C. F. Crawford, was ap- pointed to preach a sermon on missions at our next meeting. Brethren John Simmons, S. M. Simmons, F. M. Shilling, J. G. Leggett and D. C. Walker were appointed Missionary Board for the ensuing year. On motion, the Moderator was added to the Board. Corresponding letters were read and adopted to the follow- ing associations: Union, Fair River, Pearl River, Eastern La., West Pearl and Mississippi. On motion, an attempt to correspond with the Baptist State Convention was discontinued. Report of Committees. The report of the Committee on the Friendship supple- mentary letter was read and adopted. Committee discharged. See appendix A. Report of Finance Committee and the Treasurer, read and adopted. See appendix B. On motion, the Finance Committee was ordered to pay the missionary funds in their funds to the Missionary Board. Committee discharged. Report of Committee on Abstracts read and adopted. Com- mittee discharged. See C. Report of Missionary Board, with their Treasurer and Mis- sionary, read and adopted. See appendix D. Report of Elder Tines, acting under authority from the State Missionary Board, was received. On motion, said report was laid on the table. The following resolutions were read and adopted: Whereas, The destitution within our bounds is well nigh filled up with the Gospel from missionary labor, and as we are missionary Bap- tists, and feel willing to extend our missionary work beyond our bounds, and labor for the advancement of our Redeemer's Kingdom to the utter- most parts of the earth, therefore be it Resolved, 1st, That the ministers of this Association be requested to visit the colored churches within their reach, and lay the matter of Foreign Missions before them, and solicit a contribution from them to the support of Foreign Missions. Resolved, 2d, That the ministers preach a sermon on missions to their respective churches, and solicit a contribution for Home and Foreign Mis- sions and that they forward the contribution from their churches, to- gether with that from the colored churches, immediately to the Treasurer of our Missionary Board. Resolved, 3d, That our Missionary Board be instructed to appropriate the money so raised, or may hereafter be raised, for Foreign Missions, and placed in their hands to the support of Bro. David, and the colored brother with Bro. David, Baptist missionaries in Africa; and that the Treasurer of the Board state in his next report the amount received from each, and the amount disbursed, with vouchers, etc.; and the moneys so raised for Home Missions be appropriated to the support of the missionary work within our bounds, and the Treasurer to report in the same way as for Foreign Missions. Resolved, We extend our thanks to the brothers, sisters and friends, for their kind treatment to us during our stay with them. The Clerk was instructed to have printed and distributed one thousand copies of these minutes, and that he be allowed to receive $20 00 as compensation for services. The thanks of the Association was extended the Modera- tor, Clerk and Treasurer, for the faithful discharge of their duties. Your Committee on Abstracts beg leave to report the following: Moak's Creek - Are at peace with themselves, and feel to trust the Lord is with them. Tangipahoa - Have but little to report, are at peace, but had to exer- cise discipline. Had a meeting of days, in which the church seemed to be somewhat revived. Magnolia-Prayer meeting weekly, but badly attended. Church in a cold condition. Sabbath School very well attended: Smyrna-Feel that the labors of their Pastor have been abundantly blessed. Balachitto-At peace and harmony. Still prospering. Send $5 00 for missions. Zion Grove-Feel that they need the prayers of God's people. Are hoping that they may again be revived. Shady Grove-Preaching two Sabbaths in each month. Sabbath School twice each month-prosperous condition. Beulah-Have no news of importance to write. Church in peace; has a good Sabbath School. Spring Creek-Have no cheering news to record. Regular preaching once a month. Sharon-Ask the prayers of God's people, that the means of grace may be blessed to the conversion of sinners and to the edicication of God's people. Bethany-church is small, but in peace, and in a prosperous condition. Mt. Zion-during the year progress has been slow and uncertain, but during their annual meeting, many were made to rejoice in the conver- sion of several young persons. Mar's Hill-Have nothing worthy of note to communicate. Brother- ly love prevails. New Zion-Are at peace, and prosperous condition. Silver Creek-Enjoy the faithful labor of their Pastor, Elder E. M. Shilling. Mt. Pisgah-Ask the prayer of God's people. Trust that the labors of their Pastor will be blessed. Hays' Creek-Refers to their statistical table for facts. Mt. Pleasant-Desires an interest in the prayers of the Association. Union-Has nothing of importance to communicate. Is at peace, but complains of lukewarmness. Bogue Chitto, LA.-Have regular preaching. Enjoy the labors of E. M Shilling, Pastor. Bogue Chitto, Miss.-Have been greatly revived since the last meeting. Enjoy the labors of their Pastor, B. A. Crawford; assisted by Elder R. I. Boone. Mt. Herman-Has peace and harmony, with some accessions. McComb City-Newly received. In somewhat a cold state, but hope for better times. Has an interesting Sabbath School Friendship-Have been without a supply for the past year, but had some preaching. Line Creek-Rejoice in the conversion of sinners. Mt. Nebo-Reports nothing special. Has a faint and almost expiring Sabbath School. Ask the prayers of the Association. Terry's Creek-Has nothing of interest to report. Mourns the coldness and lack of zeal on part of the members. Pleasant Hill-Thanks God for the out-pouring of His spirit. Peace and brotherly love prevails. APPENDIX (D.) We, the Missionary Board of the Bogue Chitto Association, organized by electing Bro.
