I refer to "The Early Inhabitants of the Natchez District," page 14, 1792. I believe Wiliam Burch was in Mississippi Territory, alos in the Florida Parishes. Several years earlier, with sons John, Richard, Washington, and Charles in Hinds, Franklin and Jefferson Counties, Mississippi. Mississippi Baptist History records them from Salem Baptist Church, serving as messengers attending the annual meetings. If anyone has more information, please let me know. Thanks! Provers 22:28--"Remove not the ancient landmark whicy thy fathers have set." The Burch Family, by Daunton Gibbs: Richard Burch was born in Georgia about 1783. He settled three headrights in Washington Parish. One headright was in the Mt. Pisgah community. He settled two headrights on Big Silver Creek. These two headrights adjoin one another. LA Hwy. #38 croses the lower one. Richard Burch moved to Mississippi. He was last reported alive in Rankin County in 1855. One or more children of Richard Burch remained in Washington Parish. John Burch, Sr. was one of these children. He married Samanthia Clowers (1810- 1891). She was a sister, or close relative of A. J. Clowers who was an early member of the Spring Creek Masonic Lodge. John Burch, Sr. died between 1832 and 1836. He is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave near his wife in the Burch Cemetery near Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Her grave is a brick tomb with a marble slab on top. John R. Burch Jr., (1832-1914) was a son of the above John Burch, Sr. During his early life he was an overseer on the Dr. William L. Magee plantation. This was one of the largest pre-Civil War plantations in Washington Parish. Ther were 59 slaves on this plantation in 1860. He later was a mail carrier, and in his later live he was a prosperous farmer in the Mt. Pisgah area. John R. Burch, Jr. enlisted in the Washington Rifles when it was organized in Franklinton during June, 1861 by Capt. Hardy C. Richardson. This company was mustered into the Confederate Army at Camp Moore as Co. "I," 9th LA Infantry. John R. Burch, Jr. was wounded in the Battle of Sharpsburg, MD on September 19, 1862. His would disabled him for the rest of the war. John R. Burch, Jr. was an active member of Franklinton Masonic Lodge 101 for many years. He was Worshipful Master of the Lodge in 1880. His wife was Melissa Brumfield (1843-1923). She was a daughter of John W. Brumfield and a granddaughter of Ezekiel Brumfield who died at Camp Morgan (near Madisonville) during the Battle of New Orleans Campaign in the winter of 1814-1815. She was a great granddaughter of John Brumfield, Sr., a Revolutionary War Vetaran who settled in Washington Parish. John R. Burch, Jr. was a half brother of Abner C. Bickham and Edward Myles. Birch-Burch: Know Your Name, by J. C. Downing, Baton Rouge Advocate, copied by Zuma Magee --------------------------------------------------------------------- "The Old English word birce or byrce, meaning birch tree, was the parent of this surname. Prior to 1300, most people had only a single given name, which resulted in confusion; in England, Walter de la Birche lived in Worcestershire in 1182. Ralph, alte Birche and Richard del Birche lived in the same county in 1275. Richard de Birche lived in County Suffolk in 1275, and John Burch lived there in 1309. William le Byrchz lived in Staffordshire in 1332. Sim and Tomas Birch were first noted in New England in 1635 and 1684 respectively. Jounathon Burch arrived in Virginia around 1637 and Benjamin and William Birch were granted land there in the period 1663-1665. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1820 St. Helena Parish Census ----------------------------- William Burch Richard Burch 1380 Washington Parish Census ----------------------------- page 4--John Burch-- 1 male under 30 yrs. of age 1 female under 5 yrs. of age 1 female under 20 yrs. of age page 7--Richard Burch-- 2 males under 10 yrs. of age 1 male under 15 yrs. of age 1 male under 50 yrs. of age 3 females under 5 yrs. of age 1 female under 10 yrs. of age 1 female under 40 yrs. of age Washington Parish Census, 1850 ------------------------------ 215/215 Mary P.
