George Martin Fendlason FOREWORD It seems to be the conventional and approved method of procedure, where one has written a book, to write a preface, either by way of apology or to state a purpose justifying the existence of the book. There is much labor involved in collecting and compiling the information for these pages which follow. Many family lines are not complete. However, we have done our best. We acknowledge that there can be and probably are many spelling errors or typographical errors contained within these pages. However, many of the "errors" are there purposely because that is the way they appeared in the copy of some deed, will, letter or other document. These "errors" are not confined to just the spelling, but also the punctuation which in most cases appears incorrect for the same reason as the misspelled words. We want to express our heart felt thanks to every individual who assisted in any way in making this publication possible. And last, but not least, we dedicate this to the pioneer settlers of America; especially those of our ancestors who suffered the hardships as they came to this section in their covered wagons. SCRIPTURE "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." ORANGE COUNTY WILL BOOK 2, PAGE 170 A Copy-Teste:___________________________________________Clerk Circuit Court of Orange County, Virginia ****A TRUE COPY**** FAMILY HISTORY OF THE TWINS Long ere the Civil War, John Fendlason was born in North Carolina. Katie McLain was born in South Carolina. They were married in 1829 or 1830. In their little home near Wateree River, Camden, South Carolina, three children were given them --- Daniel, Margaret, and John. Then, on New Year's Day, 1835, the family moved to Macon County, Alabama, settling midway between Union Springs and Tuskegee, and about forty (40) miles east of Montgomery, Alabama. It was here that the daughter, Flora was given birth; as well as the Twins, the Honorees of Today's Celebration, the date being October 15th, 1841, and the names given them, Norman and Elizabeth Fendlason. In a rude covered wagon, drawn by a pair of yoked oxen, and a pair of horses, the Fendlason family left Alabama on the 5th day of December 1845 -- when the Twins were just four years old -- and reached the new Home, their destination on the 5th day of January 1846. They settled on Taylor's Creek, in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana and farmed that year. The father worked at Harpers' Mill during the years of 1847 and 1848, then moved his family to the Tchefuncta River, to the farm now known as the Walter Hughes' Home. Here on Tchefuncta the children spent their youth. From this home, the Twins were married. While still children, and playing in the yard about noontime, the Twins left the yard to go to the Dug Well for water. As they were drinking, a big Black Bear walked up to the well where they were, but the older boys, with their father shot the animal. Norman Fendlason married Mary Core of St. Tammany Parish, near Covington, Louisiana, in 1860. He lives in the same community to this day. He served in the War of the Confederacy. He has served his parish for a number of years as Police Juror, as well as a member of the Parish School Board. He was Superintendent of Education for St. Tammany Parish for the period from 1894 to 1898. There are three living children of this union -- J. B. Fendelason, connected with the Public City Schools of Houston, Texas; G. M. Fendlason, of the Louisiana Highway Commission Service, of town of Franklinton, Washington Parish, Louisiana; and H. N. Fendlason, a leading merchant of Folsom, Louisiana Norman Fendlason of Folsom, has twenty (20) grand-children, and 16 great-grand-children. His only daughter, Mrs. F. C. Wallace died in 1909. His wife died November 2nd, 1912. Elizabeth Fendlason and Thomas J. Simmons were married May 19th, 1862. They moved to Washington Parish near Franklinton, Louisiana. There were seven children of this union. Two died in infancy, and five grew to be men and women. Thomas J. Simmons was a farmer and a school teacher. He was elected as a member of the State Legislature in 1878, but died the day he was to have taken his Seat in the House, January 6th, 1879. Two only of his children now survive this marriage, Mrs. Richard R. Jenkins - Flora - and H. Norman Simmons, both of Franklinton, Louisiana. Three sons, Thomas J. Simmons, Junior; S. D. and M. V. Simmons are now dead. Two of the boys of Elizabeth Fendlason Simmons were elected and served this Parish as Sheriff. H. Norman Simmons was elected as Sheriff the "Day of the High Water" as the older citizens term it -- April 17th, 1900. Taking oath of office in June of the same year and serving the full four years. Thomas J. Simmons, Junior was elected as Sheriff in 1912, serving until 1916, and proving a most popular officer. Each of the Brothers served as a Deputy Sheriff under the other. Thomas J. Simmons, Junior, died April 12th, 1925. "Aunt Lizzie", as the entire Parish knows her, has 28 grand-children, 50 great-grand-children, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. About Forty one (41) years ago, Elizabeth Fendlason Simmons married B. F. Fisher. Mr. Fisher died 13 years ago this day -- 17th of October 1913. The old folks' say their recipe for long life is hard work, regular habits, and moderation, as well as totally abstaining from all intoxicants. AFFADAVIT I, FLORA SIMMONS JENKINS, being of sound mind and body, and of my own free will and accord, do hereby make the following statement which I believe to be true, to the best of my ability: That I am the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Simmons, who served in the Civil War, and his wife, Elizabeth Fendlason. My mother was a twin to Norman Fendlason, and they were born October 15th, 1841 near Union Springs, Alabama, Macon County, en route to their locating in this section, having come from South Carolina. My mother's parents were John Fendlason and Katie McLain who were born in South Carolina in 1829. My mother often spoke of her grandfather having lived in South Carolina, coming there from Scotland a few years before the Revolutionary War and joining the Revolutionists there. This is all that I recall about my great-grandfather. But my mother stated that his wife was of Scotch ancestry as well as he, both the McLains and Fendlasons coming from Scotland. I am a resident of the Parish of Washington, State of Louisiana, where I have lived my entire life. (SIGNED) Flora S. I would have been well but we march every three or four or five days the last time we marched, we marched a cross the blue ridge mountains it was a very hard march up the mountains but after we got to the top and turned down we got a long easy we are in the enemys country now one company out of our regement has been out on picket gard ever since we crossed the mountain they met three hundred of the yankeys and whiped them back killing ten or more and taking a few prisoners. Out of a hundred and thirteen men we have thirty three fit for duty John Mc has been gone to the Hospital ten or twelve days that I have never heard from him I am grieved sorely at the thought of Yankeys having possession of New Orleans though it will more blood spilled for them for we are determined to fight them the harder for that all we want is to be led on and we will give them Sut yet I have some prisoners that our men have taken. I have seen the Miss Regiment in marching but never had time to enquire after George Hughes nor I don't know whether he is there or not. Morn, May 2, 1953, George and I and our two girls drove up to Charlottesville, Va. The Yankees laugh at me and really I suppose it is over there as Charlottesville lies a little to the north of here in the western part of the state, right at the foot of the mountains. A thoroughly enjoyable ride all the way and a few miles outside the city we could see the mountains in the background. I haven't words to describe the beauty of the mts. be a flat-lander like me but George had to remind me more than once that he had no intention of ever living there. We went to a police station and got direct and easy instructions for finding what is called "University Cemetery", being a part of the Univ. of Va. Campus. You can't imagine a more beautiful resting place nor one more suggestive of peace and quiet. A medium high brick wall surrounds the cemetery. We entered through a rusty iron gate hung on stone pillars on what, to me, was the front and I believe, the south side. On over but further down was a large entrance for trucks, hearses, etc., to a part of the cemetery used, for the most part, by Univ. doctors, professors, deans, ministers and their families; all this being separated from the Confederate section by a low brick wall. There are only a few scattered monuments (individual) in the Confederate section. The ground has a rich carpet of grass and clover, a large cedar to the left of the gate and numerous shade trees thoughout. The monument (approx. 25 to 30 ft. high) stands on the highest spot in the cemetery, about 75 ft. from the entrance we used. Bronze plaques are on the 4 sides of the statue; Va., Md., and La., on the front side - La. on the bottom with 84 names listed. On the third riser of the base of the statue is this inscription: "FATE DENIED THEM VICTORY, BUT CROWNED THEM WITH GLORIOUS IMMORTALITY" The statue and plaques were cast by some Co. in NY in 1869. We saw no one to ask but no evidence that it might be objectionable so we returned later with flowers and took a few more pictures. Here are a few of the names listed under La. They may be known to some Wash. Parish family. Regiments also given: Adam, J. F. - 9th Regt. Beckham, C. M. - 9th Regt. Burns, B. - 8th Regt. Burns, P. - 6th Regt. Campbell, J. D. - 8th Regt. She was a registered nurse. Her husband was making the U. S. Marine Corps a carrer when an accident caused by a drunken driver took the lives of Minnie Lou (32), Cathey Lynn (8+) and George Thompson, Jr. (1 yr., 7 mo.) on July 6, 1956 in Elkton, MD.
