Source unknown. U.S. Mail Service The Postal Records in the National Archives show that the office at Franklinton, Washington Co., LA was established on June 29, 1822. The Postal Records in our custody show the following Postmasters appointments before 1832. Alexander Rogers, June 29, 1822, John Ellis Sr. some time during 1823, (no date given), Garland S. Hart, Nov. 20, 1828. E. P. Ellis, April 22, 1829. Postmasters changed as to which party, Democratic or Republican were in the office of President in Washington . Many small Post Offices were established in Washington Parish before Rural Routes were established around 1910. The first Route in the Parish was Rt 1. Mt Hermon, LA. George H. “Sam” Ott was appointed carrier. When Parcel Post Service was set up, small country stores got most of their merchandise through this service. Most of the records etc. of the LA State Board of Health were handled by rural carriers.
