He is survived his wife of 48 years, Bettie James Branton; three daughters and two son-in-laws,Jeannie and Karl Bickham of Franklinton, Marlene Branton of Franklinton, and Coleen andRandy Stewart of Bogalusa; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Ralph Anthony "Tony" Brantonand William Ralph, Jr and Jana Branton, all of Bogalusa; thirteen grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mildred Branton of Gretna; and numerous nieces and nephews. A W "Slick" Morton (Died April 19, 1999) BRANDON,MS A W "Slick" Morton, 85, former Tallulah High School and LSU footballstay, SEC football head coach and pioneer in Louisiana and Mississippi swimming, died at St. Dominick's Hospital in Jackson, MS Monday evening after a brief illness Morton led Tallulah to back to back state football championships in 1932 and 1933 Morton was personally recruited by Huey Long to attend LSU, where he played from 1934through 1937, being named captain of the 1937 Tiger squad He was the only living member of three LSU teams that played in the Sugar Bowl Morton was named head coach at Virginia Military Institute in 1947 and two years later assumedthe same position at Mississippi State University (1949-51). After his coaching days, Morton moved to Greenwood, MS, entering business as a generalcontractor Morton and his wife Jane, who was the 1931 Baton Rouge City Champion Swimmer, devotedover 20 years to the development of swim programs in Mississippi and Louisiana He laterserved as president of the Southern Swim Association, comprised of competitive swim teamsfrom Louisiana and Mississippi Morton's name still attracts swimmers, as the Slick Morton Invitational Meet, annually held inMonroe, Louisiana, has developed into one of the premiere meets in the Southeastern UnitedStates, attracting hundreds of swimmers each year. April 16, 1999 Michael Richmond(Died April 14, 1999)BOGALUSA Michael Richmond, 43, former city councilmen, died Wednesday at LSUWashington St Tammany Regional Medical Center Richmond has had a long and varied career in public service After he graduated from LoyolaUniversity, he returned to his hometown of Bogalusa and became one of the first AfricanAmerican elected officials At the age of 22, Richmond was one of the country's youngestelected municipal officials He was appointed to the Vice-President's Youth EmploymentCouncil at the United States Department of Labor He followed this 1980 appointment by beingone of the founding members of the National League of Cities Black Caucus Later that year, hewas appointed Assistant Vice President of student affairs at Southeastern Louisiana University. During that time, Richmond began working with Stevie Wonder to help organize the 1981 Marchon Washington in recognition of Rev Dr Martin Luther King's birthday He was later appointedto the Board of Directors of the New Orleans World Fair to assist in developing the BlackHistory Pavilion Richmond was also elected to the Board of Directors of the LouisianaMunicipal Associations Black Caucus and later became its Vice President In 1986, Richmondretired from government and moved to Boston to further his education He began working at theAIDS Action Committee in 1987 as one of it's coordinators of Minority Affairs After leavingAIDS Action Committee, he became Director of AIDS Education and Training for RoxburyComprehensive Health Center During that time he also used his talents as a board member forthe Boston Living Center and the AIDS Housing Corporation Richmond began to develop theconcept for Men of Color Against AIDS (MOCAA) in 1981 In 1993, the MassachusettsDepartment of Public Health AIDS Bureau committed to funding MOCAA for its innovativeapproach to conducting HIV and AIDS education and awareness, making this organization thefirst of its kind in the New England area to address issues relevant to gays and lesbians of color.
