She was an active member of Memorial Baptist Church where she served in many leadership positions including WMU president, chairperson of numerous committees, Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Sanctuary Choir. She was involved in civic organizations serving as president of P.T.A., member of the Garden Club, and served as a volunteer at the Bogalusa Community Medical Center as a Pink Lady. She was a retired teacher having served for 39 years in various Louisiana and Mississippi School Systems. She also taught for several years at Bowling Green School and Valley Forge Academy. She was a member of Canaan Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Van C. Paul Edward Ward (Died Jan. 23, 1999) BOGALUSA -- Paul Edward Ward of Rio, known as P.W. to many, died Saturday after a long illness. Born on Oct. 4, 1953 in Bogalusa, the son of Mrs. Reda WArd and the late H.J. Ward of Rio, Mr. Ward was graduated with the Bogalusa High School class of 1971 and worked alternately in the building and maritime trades. He held a captain's license for the operation of small ocean-going vessels and rivercraft, and operated a crew boat for ocean oil field personnel during his latter career. He saw much of the world and held a particular fascination for the Far East, the Middle East and India. While in India in 1993, he contracted hepatitis which, added to improper medication taken over a period of time for a misdiagnosed eye ailment, led to a seriously debilitating lung and liver disorder and other associated afflictions. During the last five years, his health suffered a steady decline, reducing him to constant bed care at the end. He bore his affliction with stoic determination, did not become absorbed in self-pity, and cheated the "Grim Reaper" more than a few times before his ascent into eternity. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. H.J. Ward of Rio; a brother, William H. Ward of Midland, GA; a sister, Mrs. A.L. Fredericks of Goldonna, LA; her son, Rory and daughter, Taylor; a niece, Cherie Bergeron Warren of Franklinton and nephew, Chad Bergeron of Virginia (daughter and son of Cyrus Bergeron and the late Gayle Ward Bergeron of Rio). Degree from Northwestern State University, and an M. Ed from Louisiana State University. She is survived by her husband, Oscar Dent Wood, Jr; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances Annette and Julius A. Mire; a son and daughter-in-law, Oscar Dent Wood III and Linda R. He graduated Bogalusa High School in 1972. He was All-State in football, and All-District in baseball. Magee attended college at Nichol's State University where he was All-Gulf South Conference as a punter. He played in the NFL for a brief time. Magee was the past president of Bogalusa Sports Association, a member of Northeast Athletic Association, a member of the Bogalusa Diamond Club, and a member of Mt. Zion Pentacostal Church. He was the recipient of the Bob Carter Memorial Award. Hill (Died December 30, 1998) BOGALUSA - Ronald D. Hill, 42, died Wednesday at Slidell Memorial Hospital. Hill was a resident of Picayune, MS. He is survived by his wife, Telia Farmer Hill of Picayune; two sons, Brandon Hill and Michael Hill both of Picauyne; two brothers, Gary and Timmy Hill both of Albertville, AL. And one sister, Branda Strickland, of Albertville. Interment followed in Hillview Memorial Gardens. Carl Jenkins (Died January 1, 1999) BOGALUSA - Carl Jenkins, 84, died Friday at Riverside Medical Center. He was a native of Washington Parish. He is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Jenkins was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Carnigie; his parents, Andrew and Nettie Sumrall Jenkins; brothers and sisters. John Inabnitt will officiate. Kenneth "Kenny" Paul Magee (Died December 29, 1998) FRANKLINTON - Kenneth "Kenny" Paul Magee, 56, died Thursday at Riverside Medical Center. Magee was a resident of 1618 Parker Street and a native of Franklinton. He survived by his wife, Mae Ella Marks Magee of Franklinton; one son, Keith Marks Magee of Franklinton; four step-sons, Ricky Charles Marks and Marvin Paul Marks both of Franklinton, Louis R. Marks and Nevis Marks Jr. both of Houston, TX.; four step-daughters, Karen Pleasant, Willinda Landry, Deborah Shanks, Alisa Marks all of Houston; one sister, Gail Magee of Franklinton; two brothers, Robert Magee of California and Charles Magee of Franklinton and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relativ3es and friends. Visitation will be held today at 5 p.m. at Crain and Sons Funeral Home. A wake service will be held tonight at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. The Elder Raymond Dyson will officiate. Interment will follow in Lear's Hill Church Cemetery. Togo R. Thomas (Died January 1, 1999) BOGALUSA - Togo R. Thomas, 93, died Friday at Northshore Hospital in Slidell. She was a former resident of Bogalusa and a resident of Picayune, MS. Thomas was a member of Roseland Park Baptist Church. She was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church for 50 years. While at Calvary, she was very active in the Women's Missionary Union. She was also a seamstress for many years. Thomas is survived by two sons, Lavon B. Johnson of Hattisburg, MS.; Louie E. Johnson Jr. of Picayune; one brother, Jacob Astor Roddie of New Orleans; one sister, Myrtle Demaris of Houma; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, B.Z. Thomas. Visitation was held yesterday from 6-9 p.m. at Brown-McGehee Funeral Home. Visitation will continue today from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the church.
