Varnado (Died April 30, 2002) FRANKLINTON - Losa O. Varnado, 82, a resident of Mt. Hermon, died at 9:55 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Manor in Franklinton. He was a retired dairyman and a member of the Canaan Baptist Church. Varnado is survived by his wife, Myrline Wascom Varnado of Mt. Hermon; two daughters and a son-in-law, Juana Diana Varnado and Yvonne Frances and Winfred Varnado, all of Franklinton; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Lavon and Susie Reeves Varnado of Mt. Hermon; one sister, Ophelia V. McElveen of Denham Springs, two brothers, Albert D. Varnado of California and Ray C. Varnado of New York; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Cleveland and Dixie McElveen Varnado, and a granddaughter, Stephanie Diana Crowe. Visitation will be at the Crain Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. tomorrow. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Edna 'Til' Hook Bynum Jolley (Died April 29, 2002) SUN - Edna "Til" Hook Bynum Jolley, 79, a resident of Sun since 1950 died yesterday morning at her home. She was retired from Gaylord. She was born April 19, 1923, in Dodge NE, to Lydia Janacek and Irvie Hook. She had one brother, Melvin Hook; two sisters, Lolas Maxin and Dorsal H. Wieland of Jefferson, LA; and a half-brother, Irvie A. Hook. She is also survived by numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Fred Hamilton, Hollie Bynum and Charles Jolley. Plans for a memorial service are incomplete. Esaw Weary (Died April 29, 2002) FRANKLINTON- Esaw Weary, 84, a resident of Hilltop Drive in Franklinton died yesterday at Good Samaritan's Nursing Home. Johnson Borne (Died April 27, 2002) THOMAS - Johnson Borne, 75, a native of Golden Meadow and resident of Thomas died at 9 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Medical Center in Franklinton. He is survived by a son, David Dardar of Houma; a daughter, Dale Isabel of Ville Platte; a brother, Dempsey Borne of Golden Meadow; a sister, Mary Billiot of Thomas; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Moise Velt Magee (Died April 24, 2002) ANGIE - Moise Velt Magee, 73, a resident of Angie died yesterday at his home. He was born Sept. 3, 1928 in Tylertown, MS to the late Julius Magee and Ella Dillon Magee. At an early age, he joined the Magee's Creek Baptist Church in Tylertown. He later moved to Angie and United with the Center Baptist Church under the leadership of the late L. W. Bolton Sr., where he remained until his death. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1952 and fought in the Korean War where he received a National Defense Service Medal; Korean Service Medal and a United Nations Service Medal. Upon receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1954, he returned to Tylertown and worked as a truck driver for 40 years. His former employers include Barnes Truck Lines of Columbia, MS and Wilson/Smith Truck Lines of Tylertown. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jessie Mae Peters Magee; two daughters, Emma Magee of Pontiac, MI and Emma Lee Seals (Alphonse) of McComb, MS; two sons, Larry Magee of McComb, MS and Burnell Magee (Gail) of Fort Worth, TX; two children, Robert and Carrie Magee; four stepchildren, Eunice Brown of Metairie, L. (Beatrice Moses) Harry died Sunday at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula. He grew up and united with the Wesley Ray United Methodist Church in Angie, LA, and attended Wesley Ray High where he lettered with the football team. At an early age, he married the late Clairnetta Moses Harry. To this union, four siblings were born (Ray Anthony Harry, Shelia Harry, Marie Rivera and the late Twanette Harry). Upon relocating to the Pas-Point area in MS, he married Norma Faye (Polk) Harry and joined Asbury Chapel AME Zion Church under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Samuel E. Leach, where he remained until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Twanette Harry; uncles and aunts. He was the right-of-way manager for Washington-St. Tammany Electric, a member of Franklinton Lions Club, D.A.V.T.C. Camp, VFW Post Bogalusa and the American Legion. He was also a member of Crain's Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Proter LTC, USA (Ret.), 70, a resident of Alexandria was born January 6, 1932 to the late Charlie and Janie Porter of Bogalusa. He departed this life on March 23 at 11:30 p.m. He received his bachelor of arts in elementary education degree from Southern University in 1953. He received his master of business administration from Michigan University in 1965. He was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He was initiated into Beta Sigma Chapter at Southern University in Baton Rouge in 1951. He was an active member of Epsilon Psi Lambda Chapter for many years in Alexandria. He was united in holy matrimony on the March 5, 1956, to Catherine C. Porter of Alexandria and unto this union three children were born. He was a retired lieutenant colonel having served 24 years in the United States Army. He served two combat tours of duty in Vietnam, receiving 16 decorations including the Legion of Merit; three awards of the Bronze Star Medal; two awards of Meritorious Service Medals; two awards of the Joint Service Commendation Medal; and two awards of the Army Commendation Medal. He also served as the executive director of Cenla Community Action Committee for more than 20 years. He once said, "At times, I think God saved me during two combat tours in Vietnam, so I could use my training and experience to help the less fortunate." In his role at Cenla, he managed more than 180 employees, a 5,000,000,000 budget and helped more than 30,000 poor people each year. He was active in Alexandria Business and Civic League and the Boys Clubs of Central Louisiana where he helped provide Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets and toys to the needy; scholarships to the disadvantage; training and skill development to the poorly educated; and a home away from home to hundreds of boys. He served as chairman of the Rapides Parish Bi-Racial Committee and the Alexandria Mayor's Advisory Committee. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Catherine C. He took great pleasure in sharing time with his family, especially his great-grandson, Lestat, who hs called Buddy. He also took great pride in being a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. In his younger years, he was an avid golfer and coin collector. Although he eventually gave up golf, his love of collecting coins remained. He retired from Sentry Insurance in 1979 after working for the company over 25 years. Harry Anthony Rahm (Died April 4, 2002) AUSTIN, TEXAS - Harry Anthony Rahm left this earth on Thursday evening, April 4. He was born in Lancaster, PA, and after his marriage to Urline Alston of Bogalusa, LA, he moved to Mandeville, LA. At the time of his death, he and his wife were residing in Austin. He took great pleasure in sharing time with his family, especially his great-grandson, Lestat, who he called Buddy. He also took great pride in being a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. In his younger years, he was an avid golfer and coin collector. Although he eventually gave up golf, his love of collecting coins remained. He retired from Sentry Insurance in 1979 after working for the company over 25 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Urline Alston Rahm; a daughter, Roberta Sandback of Austin; a granddaughter, Vicki Vaughn and her husband, West of Austin; a great-grandson, Lestat Vaughn of Austin; brothers, Bob, Ed and Richard Rahm and their wives; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was a life-long resident of the Bogalusa area. He honorably served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and saw action in the Pacific and Normandy Invasion. He retired from Crown Zellerbach as a plant engineer in 1974 after 44 years of service. He was a member of Elizabeth Sullivan Methodist Church. A 1936 graduate of Bogalusa High School, he attended Louisiana College. He was a member of Masonic Lodge F & AM for 50 years. He was interested in horticulture, especially Day Lillies and Camellias. For many years he judged these flowers in shows from New Orleans to Jackson, MS. He was an avid collector of antiques and spent his retirement refinishing furniture. He was also interested in American and European clocks and had over 200 in his collection.
