Hyde Sr., US Army, Retired, 82, of Covington, died Friday at 12:13 a.m. at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. A native of Kentwood, he had lived in Covington for 25 years. He served in the Army for 27 years during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He received the Bronze Star while serving in Korea. He was the beloved husband of Clara Davis Hyde by a second marriage and the late Athalean Burkhalter Hyde, by a first marriage. Survivors include two sons, Larry E. and James M. Hyde Jr.; two daughters-in-law, Jeanne P. and Karen C. Hyde; one brother, Raymond R. Hyde; two sisters, Pauline H. Penton and Marjorie Ormond; a brother-in- law, William Fitzmorris; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Norman R. and Samuel B. She was baptized at an early age at New Hope A.M.E. Zion Church. She moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1944 and worked at New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church of Detroit. She returned to Sun, LA in 1960 where she united with Jerusalem Baptist Church. She served as the mother of the church under Rev. James D. Cyrus and was ordained as a deaconess under the leadership of Rev. Keith B. Cowart. She was united in holy wedlock to the late Deacon Sullivan Young Dec. 17,1930. She was born to Robert Lee "Bob" Burris and Martha Clotilde "Matt" Wood Burris July 19, 1915, the ninth of ten children. Her family was instrumental in the beginning of the Washington Parish Fair. An agriculture-based family with strong work ethics and religious beliefs reared her. She attended the Franklinton school system, Whitworth College in Brookhaven, MS., and graduated from Louisiana State Teachers College, now Northwestern State University. She taught kindergarten as a Methodist missionary in Tampa, Fl. and Key West, Fl. before marrying her high school sweetheart, Andrew Griffith Johnson, who also was from Franklinton. She was a committed member of Centenary United Methodist Church and served in many capacities as a teacher and leader. She was a member of United Methodist Women and the Hallie Love Sunday school class. She served her community as an active club leader and the Fair as a board member and Mile Branch Settlement founder. Because of her dream, Mile Branch became a reality. She served as first chairman of Mile Branch and was, from the beginning, the chairman of the committee that approved buildings and furnishings to be added to the settlement. During the 2002 Fair she was awarded the first Mile Branch Settlement award. Annie Lorraine Addison Gard (Died Dec. 7, 2002) BOGALUSA n Annie Lorraine Addison Gard, 82, a resident of Bogalusa, died Saturday in Bogalusa. A former president of the Civic League, she enjoyed associating with the ladies sewing circle, quilting, and shared a love for art and sculpting with her husband. Her family said she was a wonderful wife and mother. Survivors include her husband, Paul Gard of Bogalusa; three sons, Peter Gard of Bogalusa, Michael Gard of Bozeman, MT, and Stephen Gard of Grenada, MS; a daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Gard of Beallsville, MD; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Paul D. Gard III; and her sister, Irma Case. A private family service will be held followed by interment in Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, KY. Fowler is survived by his mother , Mary Fowler; two sisters, Tammy (Warren) Bell of Franklinton and Shanda Warren of California; four brothers, Terry Fowler, Kenneth (Vanessa) Fowler of New Orleans, Darrell Fowler, Phillip Fowler of Franklinton; a best friend, Monica Brock and children; three uncles, Oliver Warren and James Warren of Franklinton and Birnes Warren of California and a host of relatives and friends. Jeanette Sims (Died Dec. 5, 2002) BOGALUSA -- Jeanette Sims, 62, a native and resident of Bogalusa, died at 1:30 a.m. Thursday at LSU Medical Center. Sims was a member of First Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of Bishop H. E. Quillen Jr. She served as president of the local Usher Board and district president. And she was a member of the state Usher Board. Sims was a president of Pastor's Aid, a Sunday School and Y.P.W.W. teacher for the primary department where she worked with young people and wherever else she was needed at the local, district and state levels. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Sims; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert May and two sisters and three brothers. Survivors include a daughter, Dianna Granger of Chicago, IL.; three sisters, Betty Booker, Nattine Jones and Mary Jones all of Chicago; two brothers , John (Betty) Granger of Bogalusa and Fleet (Roberta) Jones of Chicago; one sister-in-law, Mary Jane Dee; one god child, nieces, nephews and friends. A brick mason and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, along with his wife, he operated Thomas Community Grocery in the Stateline community.
