Lawmen investigating death of local toddler BOGALUSA - The Washington Parish Sheriff's Office is calling the death of an 18 month-old boy in his home Monday afternoon accidental, but the case is being investigated. According to the incident report from the WPSO, Nathaniel Fairley died after his grandfather, Joe Fairley Sr., pushed his aunt, 17 year-old Crystal Fairley, and she fell on top of the baby. When they realized the child was injured and bleeding from his head, Crystal and Joe Fairley Sr. reportedly rushed him to Washington-St. Tammany Regional Medical Center. Nathaniel Fairley was then sent by ambulance to Children's Hospital in New Orleans. But while en route, the baby's condition, which had been critical, deteriorated and the ambulance was diverted to Lakeview Hospital in Mandeville where the child died, according to the report. The 911 call from the Fairley's South Columbia Street address was received at the sheriff's office shortly before 2:30 p.m. According to the dispatcher, the nature of the call was unclear but someone could be heard screaming across the phone line. According to the report, when an officer arrived at the house, Martha Fairley, Nathaniel's grandmother, answered the door wearing a bloody white t-shirt, and said that she and her husband had been arguing in the living room of the residence. When their daughter, Crystal, came in the room to intervene, Mr. Fairley reportedly pushed her away and she fell backwards and landed on the baby. Later, Mrs. Fairley reportedly said that the argument had occurred earlier in the day,and that she and her husband were just playing around when the baby was injured.
