He is survived by a daughter, Stella Temple White of Kansas City, MO; four sons, George (Sharalean) Temple of Baton Rouge, Henry (Lillian) Temple Jr., Bobby (Veronica) Temple, and Charles Temple, all of New Orleans; four sisters, Bobbie Magee, Ollie Smith, Alice Bickham, all of Franklinton, and Nettie Mae Gatlin of Bogalusa; three brothers, Robert Gatlin of Franklinton, Clarence Gatlin of Bogalusa, and Gary Gatlin of Folsom; a step-sister, Rosa Mae Magee of Franklinton; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Gaza Missionary Baptist Church, located at 7258 Ransom St., New Orleans. The Rev. Willie Bridges Jr. will conduct the service. Billie Oden Knight Harrell (Died July 30, 2002) GULFPORT, MS - Billie Oden Knight Harrell, 77, a resident of Bay St. Louis, died Tuesday in Gulfport. A member of the Baptist faith, she was a native of Laurel, a long-time resident of Bogalusa, LA, and a resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast for 20 years. Survivors include a son, Cregg Knight; a daughter, Cindy Knight Marange, both of Mandeville; two brothers, Dale Oden of Ruston, LA, and Bobby Oden of Tennessee; two sisters, Mary Oden Davis of Jackson and Becky Oden Beebe of Picayune; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, William E. and Velma Russell Oden; her husbands, Alfred O. Knight and Byron C. Harrell; a brother, George Oden; and two sisters, Anna Oden Caldwell and Frances Oden Trotter. Visitation will be today at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home on Beauvior Road in Biloxi from 11 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. A graveside service will follow in the National Cemetery in Biloxi at 12:30 p.m. Minnie Lee Stewart (Died July 30, 2002) BOGALUSA - Minnie Lee Stewart, 91, a resident of Bogalusa, died Tuesday in the Bogalusa Community Medical Center. She served in many capacities at Second Baptist Church including president and teacher for the Mission Society, Vacation Bible School teacher, and Sunday school teacher. She worked in the third district Bogue Chitto Baptist Association holding the positions as recording and corresponding secretary for 40 years. Survivors include a special niece who lived with her, Patricia A. Stewart; niece, Barbara Thomas of Mt. Shasta, CA; nephew, Charles Spears of Pittsburg, CA; great-niece, La Shanna Stewart of Lafayette, LA; special friend, Lois Owens of Bogalusa; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pearly Stewart; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Lee; three sisters; and two brothers. Visitation will be held tomorrow at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Bogalusa from 2-6 p.m. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Second Baptist Church. The Rev. J.D. Daniel Frank 'Sonny' Huth Jr. (Died July 30, 2002) NEW ORLEANS - Daniel Frank "Sonny" Huth Jr., 55, a native of New Orleans and a Chalmette resident for the past 13 years, died Tuesday in Ochsner Foundation Medical Center in New Orleans. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Vietnam Conflict, and was an avid sportsman. Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Donna Roberson Huth; two children, Sean Philip Huth and Traci Lynn Huth, all of Chalmette; his mother, Peggy Loraine Bannister Huth of Bogalusa; a grandchild, Felicity Danielle Huth of Chalmette; a sister, Pamela Ann Giraldi of Metairie; two nephews, Kyle Oakman of Metairie and Matthew Oakman of New Orleans; and four nieces, Kelsey Oakman of Scottsdale, AZ, and Vicki Casper and Chelsea Oakman, both of New Orleans. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Frank Huth Sr. Visitation will be held today at Brown-McGehee Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the chapel funeral service at 3:30 p.m. Father Lawrence Phelps will officiate at the service. Interment will follow in Ponemah Cemetery. Yvonne Young (Died July 31, 2002) BOGALUSA - Yvonne Young, 77, a resident of Bogalusa, died yesterday in the Bogalusa-LSU Medical Center. Willie Everette Ginn (Died July 27, 2002) BOGALUSA - Willie Everette Ginn, 83, was called from earth to heaven's reward Saturday. He was born a twin to the late Ellis Ginn and Ethel John Ginn Parker Aug. 5, 1918, and was reared in the Mitchell City community. He attended Central Elementary and High School, and after graduation attended Southern University where he received a bachelor of science and a master of education degree. He went on to further his study at Xavier University, Louisiana State University, and Southeastern Louisiana University. During his lifetime, Ginn taught at St. Helena High in Greensburg, LA, Wesley Ray High, Poplas Elementary and Bogalusa Junior High. He retired with 31 years of service in the school system. Ginn was the founder and organizer of the Central Memorial High School Mass Class Reunion, a tradition that still continues. When there was a need for fire protection in the community, he was one of the organizers, serving on the administrative board of Ward Seven's Volunteer Fire Department. The owner and teacher of Petite Musique School, he was the first president of the Black Retired Teachers Association, the Progressive Business Club, a past president of the Bogalusa Senior Citizens Group, the Washington Parish Council on Aging, and a member of the local, district and national Retired Teachers Association. He served as an officer of all positions of the Knights of Phythias and was a member of the board of management of the Avenue U YMCA, as well as being a member of the Bogalusa Heart Study. Ginn volunteered his serviced to the Good Samaritans Nursing Home, Heritage Manor, Rest Haven and the Washington Correctional Institute. He was a faithful and active member of the Harry's Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as class leader, president of United Methodist Men, a Sunday school teacher, lay speaker and church pianist. His friends said he was well-known and loved by everyone. Survivors include nine god-children, Arthur Barner, Calvin Brown, Bobby Franklin, Tamara Caprice Franklin, Larry Gibson, Kenny Lynch, Willie John Perkins, William Robinson and Jerome Williams; god-brothers, John Jackson and Sylvester Pittman; god-sisters, Lockie Mae Rhodes and Nercel Young; special cousins, Larry and Lazette Watterson; and numerous cousins, dear friends, and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Wilbert Elliot Ginn; cousins, Rosie Lee Brown, Oceal Martin, Ella Magee, Chinese Ginn and Mardessa Broadway. Timothy Bryan Amacker (Died July 11, 2002) COVINGTON- Timothy Bryan Amacker, 32, a resident of the Crossroads community died yesterday in Lakeview Regional Medical Center in Covington. James Leon Campbell (Died July 27, 2002) FRANKLINTON- James Leon Campbell, a native of Middlebrook, AR, and a resident of Franklinton, died Saturday in Riverside Medical Center in Franklinton, at the age of 69. He was a 33-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in World War II, Korea and three tours in Vietnam. He was also a member of Bible Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Lena Thomas Campbell of Franklinton; two sons, James L. Campbell Jr. of Franklinton and Danny Ray Hathorne of Baton Rouge; four daughters, Mary Mulhern of Fredricksberg, VA, Diane Sirrana of Pennsylvania, Gene Erwin of Madisonville and Denise Saucier of Bogalusa; one brother, Richard Lamousin of Picayune, MS; two sisters, Gene Champagne of Mandeville and Wanda Bourgeious of Mandeville; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bolivar Samuel Sheridan (Died July 27, 2002) BOGALUSA- Bolivar Samuel Sheridan, a resident of Bogalusa, died Saturday in Our Lady of the Lake Hospital of Baton Rouge at the age of 86. He was a charter member of Westside Emmanuel Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for over 35 years. He was member of the Center Lodge No. 244 A&M, formerly an active member of the Kiwanis and a union official of Local 362. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Billy Magee of Bogalusa and Marie and McRae Sullivan of Bedford, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Peggy Sheridan of Pearl, MS; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy E. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Sandy Hook where he was a faithful member of the adult choir and the male choir until his health failed him. Daniel "Danny" Ortiz (Died July 26, 2002) FRANKLINTON -- Daniel "Danny" Ortiz, 33, a resident of Stoney Point, died Friday in an automobile accident. He was a carpenter. Ortiz is survived by his mother and step-father, Hazel and Carl Burnett of Stoney Point; one sister, Georgette Bruse of Williamsburg, KY. ; two nieces and a nephew. Velma Hamilton Grantham (Died July 26, 2002) BOGALUSA -- Velma Hamilton Grantham, 94, a native and lifelong resident of Bogalusa, died Friday at Columbia/Lakeview Medical Center in Covington. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Elbert Archie Grantham of Bogalusa; a sister, Gladys Hamilton Quave of Bogalusa; a niece and nephew-in-law, Lisa and Bobby Tanner of Angie and a nephew, John L. Hamilton of Baton Rouge. Grantham is also survived by a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Grantham; her parents, Modina Crowe Hamilton and Jogn Prentis Hamilton and four brothers, Lloyd, Floyd, Earl and Clyde Hamilton. Interment will be in the Ponemah Cemetery. Galen Donald Dubay (Died July 22, 2002) BOGALUSA- Galen Donald Dubay, age 62, died Monday in his residence of Bogalusa. A U.S. Air Force Veteran and Maintenance Supervisor for the Housing Authority, He was best known throughout Washington Parish as a Bible teacher and guest (supply) preacher for area churches. When he was not filling in for other churches he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon for Highland Baptist Church. He also served seven years as pastor of Southern Baptist Church of Varnado. He is survived by his wife, Faye Dubay; two daughters, Kim Dubay and Suzie Pitman; one son-in-law, Jodie Pittman; one granddaughter Erin Pittman; three sisters, Jeanette Ford, Marilyn Adams and Ruth Vetsch; three sisters-in-law, Janice Thomas, JoAnne Brown and Shari Prudhomme; his father-in-law, Joseph Hayman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Larry Wayne McNeese (Died July 25, 2002) FRANKLINTON- Larry Wayne McNeese, a resident of Franklinton, died yesterday in his home at the age of 57. He is survived by his wife, Wilda Schilling McNeese; two sons, Mitchell and Alex Scott McNeese; two brothers, Robert McNeese from Franklinton and Daryl Jones from Varnado; and two sisters, Johnnie Ann McNeese and Mildred McNeese both of Franklinton. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Wilton and Mary Anna McNeese; and one brother, Kenny McNeese. She was especially fond of watching football games on Sunday afternoons with "Precious". Family members said, she was a loving grandmother and will be sadly missed. Eunice Coco Hebert (Died July 17, 2002) BATON ROUGE - Eunice Coco Hebert, 94, a resident of Southside Gardens Retirement Community in Baton Rouge for the past 11 years and former Bogalusa resident, died at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. She taught in the Louisiana School System for 47 years where she retired from Bogalusa High School. Many parents, now turned grandparents, attended her classes and had the utmost respect for her abilities. Family members said she was one of the most beloved teachers and brilliant personalities to ever grace the halls of learning. All those who recognize agility and eloquence will sorely miss her, they said. She was a loving sister and aunt who expected the best from anyone with whom she came in contact. She was a retired professional registered nurse who served her country during World War II as a nurse in the U.S. Navy. After the war she practiced her nursing profession in all areas of nursing and retired as a school nurse in the Washington Parish School System. Margaret Elizabeth Wicks Sloan (Died June 29, 2002) SPRING, TEXAS- Margaret Elizabeth Wicks Sloan, a resident of Spring and former resident of Covington, died June 29 in Houston. She was born May 15, 1927, in Alligator, MS. She was a graduate of Clarksdale High School and Stephens College and also attended the University of Mississippi. She was presented as a debutante at The Mississippi Delta Debutante Club in Greenville, MS, in 1947. Sloan was a member of the Colonial Dames of America. She was a resident of New Orleans, LA, from 1954-61, Covington from 1961-84 and Spring from 1984 until her death. She was also a member of First Baptist Church in Covington. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Harry Wicks and Gladys Harris Wicks, formerly of Alligator; and her sister, Gladys Wicks Nixon, formerly of Huntsville, AL. She is survived by her four sons and three daughters-in-law, Brenda and Charles LeLouis Sloan III of Galveston, Beth and Walter Wicks Sloan of Mandeville, LA, John Hardy Sloan of Littleton, CO, and Janet and Zachary Millsaps Sloan of Covington; a former husband, Charles L. Sloan; grandchildren, Heather Elizabeth Sloan of Galveston, Margaret Lynn Sloan and Zachary Millsaps Sloan Jr., both of Thorold, Ontario, Canada, Lauren Danielle Sloan of Florence, AL, Sasha Sara Sloan of Covington, Jacob Walter Sloan of Abita Springs, LA, and Megan Quinn Sloan of Mandeville.; step grandchildren, David Inabinet of Slidell, LA, and Tony Inabinet of Covington; one sister, Harriette Wicks Kinkade of Spring; nieces and nephews, James Fred Nixon, III, Susan Nixon Christian and Candice Nixon Johannes, all of Huntsville, Frank Shelton Kinkade of Houston, Keith Harris Kinkade and Kevin Walker Kinkade, both of Madison, MS.; great nieces and nephews, Sara Elizabeth Christian, Grant Adcock Johannes, Shelby Braggs Christian and William Harris Christian, all of Huntsville; and a brother-in-law, James Fred Nixon Jr. of Huntsville. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Spring Baptist Church in Spring. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Lung Association Earl Magee (Died July 1, 2002) FRANKLINTON- A native of Franklinton, Earl Magee, 89, died Monday in St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. He is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary Nell and Robert Wilson of Franklinton, Pearl and Ronald Netterville of Baton Rouge, and Earline Strahan and Alma Richards, both of Las Vegas, NV; four sons and three daughters-in-law, John Magee of Franklinton, Robert and Etta Dean Magee of Franklinton, Willie Albert and Glendora Magee of Baton Rouge, Willie J. and Pearl Magee, also of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Antronette Thomas of New Orleans and Hynitha McDowell of McComb, MS; 40 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Johnny Causey officiating. Interment will follow in Moriah Cemetery. Joan Marie 'Kit' Foster (Died June 28, 2002) VARNADO- Joan Marie "Kit" Foster, 50, a resident of Varnado, died Friday. A life-long member of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church and a graduate of Varnado High School, Foster was a devoted homemaker, always caring and attending to the needs of others. She was preceded in death by her father, James Foster; one sister, Debra Foster; and three brothers, James E. Foster, Willie L. Foster and Ray A. Pigott. She is survived by her mother, Grace Foster; one daughter, Cathy Amos of Varnado; one son, Denver D. Foster of Varnado; three grandchildren, Ja'Marian Collins of Bogalusa, and Trevonne L. Mingo and Mark F. Amos IV of Varnado; close and special friend, B.J. Peters of Varnado; a god son, La'Darrius D. Sheridan of Elizabeth-City, NC; eight sisters, Ruby L. Mingo, Ozzlean Foster, Jamie L. Roy Gene Hartzog (Died July 1, 2002) ANGIE- Roy Gene Hartzog, 54, died yesterday in Washington-St. Tammany Regional Medical Center of Bogalusa. He is survived by one son, Chad Hartzog of Bush; his mother, Ethylene Hartzog of Angie; two sisters, Sylvia Bell and Pat Maples, both of Angie; four brothers, Elvis Hartzog of Varnado, Berferd Hartzog of Bogalusa, Gilbert Hartzog of Angie and Jerry Hartzog, also of Angie; and two grandchildren, Morgan and Jessica Hartzog, both of Covington. He was preceded in death by his father, James L. Hartzog; and one brother, Johnny Hartzog. Perez, 71, a resident of Good Samaritan Nursing Home, died Sunday. He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Loyd Stafford of Stateline; one niece, Sherry and Kevin Sumrall of Dexter, MS; one nephew, Loyd Stafford Jr. of Key West, FL; two great-nephews, Sam and Kyle Sumrall; and numerous cousins. Hawkins (Died June 28, 2002) TRION, GA- Betty J. Hawkins, 71, a long-time resident of Trion, died Friday afternoon in Rome, GA. Hawkins, the wife of "Pop" Hawkins, was born in Bogalusa, LA, May 30, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Jason Earnest Seal and Rubee Colett Seal. "Pop" and Betty Hawkins met in a drug store in Bogalusa in 1948 and married shortly thereafter. The couple moved to southern California in 1949 and 35 years later retired to "Pop's" hometown of Trion to be close to family. She was a beauty queen and modeled occasionally. Family members said she always had a flair for fashion and dress and she maintained her beauty, charm and eloquence throughout her life. She served as an executive corporate secretary but emphasized her home life, and devotion to her husband and son, Michael. She was an avid fast walker. She and her husband enjoyed the simple country lifestyle. She became more aware of spiritual and religious values in recent years. Survivors include one son, James Michael Hawkins of Georges Mills, NH; three siblings, Marie Lively and Barbara Stogner, both of Zackery, LA, and Ken Seal of Biloxi, MS; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. in the chapel of J. D. Hill Funeral Home in Trion. The Revs. Ken Johnson and Art Graves will officiate and interment will follow in West Hill Cemetery. Betty Jean Duncan Stevens (Died June 25, 2002) JEFFERSON, LA- Betty Jean Duncan Stevens, 69, a resident of Jefferson and former resident of Bogalusa, died Thursday in Mercy Medical Hospital of New Orleans. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, June and Tommy Richardson of Dallas, Texas, and Sandra and David Moliere of Baton Rouge, LA; two brothers, Kenneth R. Duncan of Bogalusa and James Hilton Walley of Bogalusa; and eight grandchildren. Visitation was today at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from 9 until the funeral service at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dennis Allen officiated and interment followed in Seal Cemetery. Cora Davis (Died June 27, 2002) BOGALUSA- Cora Davis, 59, a resident of Bogalusa, died Thursday in the Bogalusa Community Medical Cente. She is survived by a special friend, David Earl Pittman of Bogalusa; one brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Amos and Edna Davis of Bogalusa; three sisters, Rosie Mae Bridges of Bogalusa, Maeola Ray of Bogalusa and Leola William of Elkhart, IN; a sister-in-law, Maeola Davis of Sun; a special nephew, Kevin Davis of Minneapolis, MN; two special nieces, Jasmine Stokes of Bogalusa and Barbara Hart of Picayune, MS; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luke and Mary Lee Davis; a brother Luke Davis; and three sisters, Lucy Mae Tate, Bertha Lee Davis and Josie Lee Adam.
