Kerrin Edgar Varnado (Died May 30, 2002) LAKE CHARLES - Kerrin Edgar Varnado, 75, a native of Franklinton and a resident of Lake Charles, died May 30 at his residence. He was a retired employee of Sears in Lake Charles, a Naval Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Lake Charles. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Varnado of Lake Charles; two daughters, Keitha Speer of Centreville, Va and Kelli Rhymes of Leesburg, VA; a brother, Kaye Varnado of Mandeville; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Reita Wilson Varnado. Bobbie Jean Taylor (Died May 28, 2002) BOGALUSA - Bobbie Jean Taylor, 52, a resident of Harlow Street in Bogalusa, died May 28 at her residence. Clifton "Cliff" Stewart (Died May 31, 2002) BOGALUSA - Clifton "Cliff" Stewart, 45, a Bogalusa native and resident, died at his residence last Friday. He was a member of Edgewood Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Santhia Ann Thomas Stewart of Bogalusa; two daughters, Misti Annette Stewart Leos and her husband, Brandon Leos of Bogalusa and Heather Renee Stewart of Bogalusa; a brother, Randall Stewart and his wife, Debra of Bogalusa; a sister, Deborah Dunaway and her husband, Joe Dunaway of Bogalusa; his mother, Betty Breath of Bogalusa; his step-father, Charles Breath of Bogalusa; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Stewart; and his mother-in-law, Ruth P. Thomas. Julius Dewitt Shivers Jr. (Died May 24, 2002) ATLANTA- Julius Dewitt Shivers, Jr., 85, of Longboat Key, FL, died at Hospice Atlanta May 24 from complications of congestive heart failure and cancer. He grew up in Bogalusa where he played football for the Lumberjacks. As a teenager he delivered blocks of ice around Bogalusa in the days before refrigeration. He won football and track scholarships to and was a graduate of Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson, MS and the University of Mississippi. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, became a fighter pilot and won the Silver Star in WWII. After retiring from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel, he became a real estate broker in Miami, FL. He is survived by two sisters, Rose Shivers Branch of Bogalusa and Clytee Shivers Sandifer of Baton Rouge; a brother, Thomas Rodney Shivers and his wife, Cecilia, of Cheyenne, WY; three children, Julius Dewitt Shivers, III "Butch," and his wife, Helen, of Orange Beach and Selma, AL, Douglas Wayne Shivers, Sr. of Miami; and Susan Shivers Fink and her husband, Gary, of Atlanta, GA; seven grandsons and one granddaughter, Stephen Andrew Shivers and his wife, Lise, of Mobile, Douglas Wayne Shivers, Jr. and his wife Sharan, of Miami, Bradley Dewitt Shivers and his wife Michelle, of Orange Beach, AL, James Dewitt Shivers and his wife Shelley, of Zephyr Hills, FL, Jonathan Matthew Shivers and Daniel Brian Shivers, both of Miami and John Dewitt Fink and Elena Elisabeth Fink, of Atlanta; five great-grandsons, two great-granddaughters. Lott, 83, a Bogalusa resident, died yesterday at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. She is survived by three sons, Wilton L. "Billy" Lott and his wife, Sharon Kay of Bogalusa, John E. Lott of Bogalusa and Robert Ray Lott and his wife, Debbie of Chadds Ford, PA; a daughter, Barbara L. Leslie, 62, died May 3 at Denali Center. He was born Sept. 8, 1939, in Savannah, GA; he graduated from high school in Bogalusa, La. Leslie joined the U. S. Army in 1956. He went to Alaska while in the Army and decided to stay in Fairbanks after his tour of duty was complete. He had been a member of the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 375 since 1960. He enjoyed tae kwon do with his grandsons, Coty and David. He wed Carol Cameron Dec. 9, 1972. He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Fairbanks, AK; six children, Lily Leslie, Laura Leslie, Chuck Leslie Jr., Willis Ellis, Fredda Leslie, all of Fairbanks, and Jody Ellis of Norfolk, Va.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Richard Leslie of Rohnert Park, CA, William Leslie of Fairbanks, and Tim and Gary Leslie of Bogalusa; three sisters, Fredda Miller of Poplarville, MS, Margaret Galloway of Bogalusa and Josie Hartzog of Angie. A native of Lincola County, she was a tax preparer and a member of Hurricane Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Bob Stafford of Columbia; three daughters, Paula Deal and Glenda Maxwell, both of Columbia, and Gayla Daniels of Pascagoula; one sister, Aylenn Smith of Brookhaven; a brother, Robert Kyzar of Brookhaven; seven grandchildren; and five stepchildren. Bessie Thomas Quin (Died May 29, 2002) FRANKLINTON - Bessie Thomas Quin, 90, a resident of the Bonner Creek community died Wednesday at her residence. She was born Jan. 24, 1912, in Washington Parish, the third of six children born to Andrew and Ettie Louise Pittman Thomas. Her life was spent in Washington Parish as a homemaker and an active member of the Bonner Creek Baptist Church. Fatal shooting BY MARCELLE HANEMANN THE DAILY NEWS FRANKLINTON - A series of domestic disturbance incidents ended in the death of a Franklinton woman early Sunday morning. Felicia M. Fox, 26, 203 T. W. Barker Drive, was reportedly shot and killed by Robert Shelton Toomer Jr., 22, same address, at approximately 5 a.m. Toomer was, in turn, shot in the arm by Colie Williams Jr., 25, 1831 1/2 Greenlaw Ave. during the incident, according to the Franklinton Police Department. Toomer had been charged with aggravated assault on Fox last Wednesday and bonded out, said FPD Chief Lynn Armand. Additionally, Fox had reportedly called the FPD to complain that Toomer had returned to her house the night before the shooting. Officers had "moved him on" at that time, said Armand. Toomer was charged with unauthorized entry, illegal possession of a stolen firearm and second degree murder. Williams was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and aggravated assault with a firearm following the incident. Anton Moore (Died May 28, 2002) FRANKLINTON - Anton Moore, 18, a resident of 18th Avenue in Franklinton died yesterday in Isabel as a result of a drowning. Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton is in charge of arrangements which are incomplete. Lt. Col. Arnold W. 'Shorty' Dahlgren (Died May 27, 2002) VARNADO - Lt. Col. (retired) Arnold W. "Shorty" Dahlgren, 87, died at 10:25 a.m. Monday at his home in Varnado. He was born in Springhill, AL, on Aug. 12, 1914, and worked as a papermaker at the Mobile International Paper Company mill. He spent most of his adult life as a military policeman, starting with reserve duty in the 31st Infantry Dixie Division, Pritchard Armory. He was a decorated officer who served in World War II and in the Korean Conflict, and was assigned to various posts in the United States as a provost marshall and as an administrator of disciplinary barracks. After he retired from the Army, he moved to Natchez, MS, and worked as security chief for International Paper's Natchez mill. He was an active community volunteer, known primarily for his work in disaster relief with the American Red Cross. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Mary Swaon Dahlgren, of Mobile, AL, a devoted military wife; his parents, Sten A. and Anna M. Bachman Dahlgren of Chicksaw, AL; his sister, Alice Eleanor Dahlgren McEvoy of Mobile; and his brother who died in childhood. Margaret and Shorty's only child, Carolyn Marie Dahlgren lives in Carbondale, CO. His grandson, Daniel T. Levin, also lives in Colorado. His granddaughter, Carey E. Levin lives in California. He will be missed by his daughter, grandchildren and by his friends, who became family in Varnado. Bolton NORFOLK, VA - Navy Petty Officer First Class Robin N. Bolton, daughter of Carol B. and Joseph R. Morgan of Willie Mays St., Bogalusa, LA, recently departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp. The ship is based in Norfolk. Bolton is one of more than 10,000 Atlantic Fleet sailors and Marines aboard the ships of the USS John F. Kennedy Carrier Battle Group and USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group. While on deployment, Bolton will participate in joint-service, multi-national operations and have the opportunity to visit foreign ports. Bolton is a 1982 graduate of Bogalusa High School. She joined the Navy in August 1987. She is a 1987 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University with a bachelor's degree. In 1994, she earned her master's degree from National University in California. Jacqueline 'Jackie' Perrin Porter (Died May 26, 2002) BOGALUSA - Jacqueline "Jackie" Perrin Porter, 73, a resident of Bogalusa died Sunday at Bogalusa Community Medical Center. She was born in New Orleans. She married on December 23, 1950 and moved to Bogalusa in 1957. She received her B.A. in Sociology from LSU and did social work. She was active in many civic organizations: Civic League, Bogalusa Medical Auxilliary and Camp Fire Leader for 10 years. She was awarded the Highest Achievement Award in Camp Fire, Wakan Award for recognition of extensive and innovative service to youth for four or more years in 1970, Sebago Award to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of camping and outdoor programing in 1973, Outstanding Leadership Award and Blue Ribbon Volunteer Award. She was also active in all branches of the scouting program until her death. She was a substitute teacher for the Bogalusa School System. She was a member of ESM United Methodist Church and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She also was YACC starting director. She is survived by her husband, Rand Porter of Bogalusa; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna Porter Guidry and husband, Paul of North Hollywood, CA; and a grandson, Channing Perrin Guidry of North Hollywood, CA. He was a retired vice president of Baton Rouge Water Works. He was a U. S. Navy veteran and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. He was a 1956 graduate of Mt. She was a charter member of Monroe Street Baptist Church and a faithful member until her illness confined her to home. The church was the center of her life. She was retired from the Bogalusa School System. She spent the last days of her life at the Sherwood Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Hospital. He was born July 20, 1949. He worked for several years for J. C. Penney and left that job to pursue his love and dream of being a dairy farmer. Currently he was working at the IceHouse Water Bottling Co. in Bogalusa. Fatal crash THOMAS - A Franklinton teenager was pronounced dead at the scene and two others were transported to Riverside Medical Center after a near-midnight accident Saturday on LA Hwy. 424 in the Thomas community. The deceased was Jeremy Knight, 16, 51662 Lawrence Creek Road, who had been riding in the front passenger seat of a car driven by Anthony Voltolina, 17, Holly Court. Dana Westmoreland, 16, 28431 Gerald St., was also a passenger in the car. None were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. According to reports from the Louisiana State Police, the vehicle had been southbound on LA Hwy. 424 at approximately 11:50 p.m. when it ran off the west side of the roadway. Voltolina reportedly overcorrected, reentered the highway and veered into the opposite lane, at which time he overcorrected again and went back off the west side of the roadway. As the vehicle left the highway, it struck a culvert and overturned, according to the reports. Both Voltolina and Knight were ejected. Coroner Chip McVea pronounced Knight dead at the scene at approximately 12:45 a.m. Voltolina has been charged with negligent injury, negligent homicide and careless operation of a vehicle. Blood was drawn from the driver for analysis. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Penton Luper of Pine; two sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Ann Luper of Pine and Kevin and Sheret Luper of Pine; a daughter and son-in-law, Juana and Jesse Conner of Shuqualak, MS; six sisters and their spouses, Nellie and Jim Sandifer, Elaine and Alton Primes, Pauline and Robert Branch, Sybil and Johnny Seal, Sally Penton, all of Pine and Betty and Billy Amacker of Denham Springs; two brothers and their spouses, Bobby and Delores Luper and James and Sandy Luper, all of Pine; seven grandchildren, Theresa and Jay Conner, Christopher, Lane and T.J. Luper, and Logan and Raven Luper. He was preceded in death by his parents Lucious and Inez Reviere Luper; three brothers, Willie Luper, Larry Luper and Johnny Ray Luper. Visitation was Saturday at Crain Funeral Home from 5-10 p.m. and yesterday from 9 a.m. until the service at 3 p.m. Elders Clyde Cooper, Ben Whatley and Warren Heck officiated. Interment followed in the Harmony Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Eula Marie Baker Wolfe (Died May 2, 2002) PATTERSON, LA - Eula Marie baker Wolfe, 46, died last Thursday at her residence in Patterson, LA. She was a native of New Orleans. She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Gray of Bogalusa; three sons, Raymond Randolph, Randy Randolph and C.B. Wolfe all of Patterson; her mother, Lela Rollins of Bogalusa; her step-father, Oliver Rollins of Georgia; six sisters, Sarah Daniels of Mobile, AL, Bonnie Ladner of Bogalusa, Daisy Jones of Kenner, Frances Gaiser of Bogalusa, Cathy Nobles of Bogalusa, Brenda Jarrell of Bogalusa; three grandchildren, Cassie Wolfe of Pennsylvania, Michael Oliver of Bogalusa and Lela Michelle Oliver of Bogalusa; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert E. Lee Baker; two brothers, Charles Robert Baker and Raymond O'neal Baker; and a daughter, Mechelle Wolfe. "Terry" Bass, Sr. (Died May 3, 2002) BOGALUSA - Terrence D. "Terry" Bass, Sr., 65, a resident of Bogalusa died last Friday at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. He was a member of American Legion Post 24, retired after 24 years from the U.S. Navy and a member of Highland Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ruby P. Bass of Bogalusa; a son, Samuel R. Bass of Baton Rouge; a daughter, Denise DeWeese of Baton Rouge; two step-daughters, Debbie Vitrano of Slidell and Tammy Davis of Navarre, FL; a brother, Bobby Ray Bass of Columbus, OH; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hosea Daniel and Myrtle Bass; and a son, Terrence D. Bass, Jr. Visitation was yesterday at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home.
