Slidell man drowns after falling from horse into pond SLIDELL n A Slidell man drowned Sunday after the horse he and a friend were riding became startled as it approached a pond and threw both riders into the water. The other rider was reportedly uninjured, but Eric Blakely, 31, 60087 Javery St., did not emerge from the pond after the fall. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in a wooded area near Louisiana Highway 11 north of Slidell. According to sheriff's office reports, Blakely and three friends were riding three horses when they came to and decided to cross a pond. While they were in the process of crossing, Blakely's horse balked and threw its riders. And though the other rider made it safely to dry land, there was reportedly no more sign of Blakely. The remaining riders said they searched unsuccessfully for their friend then called the sheriff's office for assistance. The body was recovered shortly after 6 p.m. by the sheriff's office dive team. It was initially unclear what had prevented the man from getting out of the water. The body was turned over to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's office for investigation.
