Ruth Elizabeth Holcomb (Died August 23, 2003) BOGALUSA n Ruth Elizabeth Holcomb, 85, a resident of Bogalusa, died Saturday in Lakeview Regional Medical Center in Covington. She and her husband Charles Holcomb were founders of Rest haven Nursing Home. A faithful member of Memorial Baptist Church, she will be greatly missed by her many friends. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and June Holcomb; six grandchildren, Rhonda Tork of Wimberly, Texas, Rebecca Holcomb of Las Vegas, NV, David, Crystal, and Charlie Holcomb, and Trent Temples of Bogalusa; nine great-grandchildren; two nieces, Linda Winstead of Bogalusa, and Betty Davis of Bush; two nephews, Stanley Hickman of Village Mills, Texas, and Gary Hickman of Bogalusa. Larry Leonard 'Paw Paw' Davis (Died August 22, 2003) SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS n Larry Leonard "Paw Paw" Davis, 73, a native of Bogalusa and longtime resident of San Antonio, died Friday. Born Dec. 21, 1929 in Bogalusa to Miles and Eleanor Davis, he began his career at 18 for Gaylord Container, transferred in 1969 to San Antonio and began his sales career with the company. There he excelled before retiring after 40 years of service. He always had a smile for everyone and his customers and co-workers turned into his lifelong friends, family members said, continuing, "Larry was a kind and gentle soul who really cared for other people and reveled in their success." An avid golfer, he enjoyed competition and excelled in many endeavors. He also had a lifelong love for the YMCA. "Paw Paw" was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched, family members said. Survivors include his children, Greg Davis of Austin, Texas, Mark Davis and his wife Beth, and Patti Rittimann and her husband Ron, both of San Antonio, Texas; his grandchildren, Nick, Loran, and Justin Davis, and Hunter and Kylie Rittimann. He was preceded in death by his one true love of 33 years, Sylvia Davis. His family said his life was a great adventure. He owned and operated Unichem Pharmaceuticals in Bangkok, Thailand for 35 years. He had offices in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong. He was a philanthropist, writer, artist and world traveler. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jayanthi Rao, and his children, Dr. Jay Rao of the Parkinson's Disease Center at LSUHSC; Dr. Jay Appurao, a surgeon at LSUHSC-Bogalusa Community Hospital; Vijaya Devarajan of Luling and New Orleans; and Jayasree Srikar of Kumbakonam, India. He is the father-in-law of Dr. Jayashree Rao of LSUHSC and Children's Hospital; Dr. Vijaya Jay Appurao of LSUHSC-Bogalusa Community Hospital; Dr. V.N. Devarajan of St. Charles parish Hospital in Luling; and Srikar of Kumbakonam, India. Arthur Edwin Reed (Died Aug. 10, 2003) BOGALUSA n Arthur Edwin Reed, 87, a longtime resident of Bogalusa, died yesterday, four days prior to his 88th birthday. He earned a master's degree in chemical engineering at Louisiana State University and graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis and Submarine School at New London, CT. Serving as lieutenant commander in the submarine service of the Asiatic-Pacific Fleet during World War II, at the end of the war he moved to Bogalusa to work in the lab of the Gaylord Mill. After 37 years of dedicated service he retired as pulp mill superintendent. Reed was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and taught classes in both the Logos Youth Program and the Joy Sunday School Class, serving as an elder, and known as the "grits cooker" for the Wednesday morning prayer breakfast. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 24. Survivors include his daughter, Veda Ann Matthews; son-in-law, Edward Louis Matthews; granddaughter, Meredith Veda Matthews; brother-in-law, Dub Watts; sisters-in-law, Gloria Watts, Claire Strain, and Mary Dittmer, all of Bogalusa; two sisters, Hollis Taylor of Minden and Millie Crippen of Elkin's Lake, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Hermon, died Sunday in his home. He is survived by two sons, Robert (Catnan) Keating and Charles (Roseanne) Keating, both of Bogalusa; four daughters, Lois (John) Edwards of Mt. Hermon, Darlene (Jerry) Blackwell of Thomas, and Jeanette Bickham of Pine, and Delores (Dewain) Creel of Bogalusa; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maybelle Keating; a daughter; a sister; three brothers; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter. Visitation was held at Brown-McGehee Funeral Home Monday from 4:30-10 p.m. and continued Tuesday from 8 a.m. until the chapel funeral service at 2 p.m. The Rev. Wesley Quave officiated at the service. Interment followed at Hayes Creek in Clifton. Hall of Bogalusa; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and many more nephews, nieces and friends. She is survived by seven daughters, Elaine Johnson, Shelia Roberts, Brenda (Robert) Crumedy, Tyna Roberts, Stephanie (Eric) Yarbrough, Laura Roberts, and Tasha (Brian) McCree, all of Bogalusa; five sons, Stanley Roberts of South Carolina, Willie (Karen) Roberts of New Orleans, John Roberts, Tony (Lo Lynette) Roberts, and Orlando Roberts, all of Bogalusa; five sisters, Melanie Wilkes, Charlene McCloud, both of Columbia, MS, Irene (Clarence) Walker of Bassfield, MS, Bobbie Jean (J.C.) She is survived by a sister, Toxie Warner of Bogalusa; a granddaughter, Sondra Wells of Covington; a great-granddaughter, Rae Wheelis of Weimar, Texas; three great-great-grandchildren, Peyton, Brennan, and Brooke Wheelis; a daughter-in-law, Tina Lewis and her son Tyler of Mandeville; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband, Alfred Lewis; a son, Walter B. Lewis; and many other family members.
