Helen Bickham (Died July 14, 2003) FRANKLINTON n Helen Bickham, 72, a native of Franklinton and a resident of 13th Avenue in Franklinton, died Monday in Riverside Medical Center. Mary Warner Barnes (Died July 14, 2003) BOGALUSA n Mary Warner Barnes, 59, a resident of Mack Street in Bogalusa, died Monday in the LSU Medical Center in Bogalusa. She was a member of The National Science Teacher Association, the Gaylord Community Advisor Panel, was a Southern University alumni, and a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. He was a member of the Stoney Point Missionary Baptist Church, was a former dairyman and an employee of Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commission in Hammond, and was a US Air Force veteran. Survivors include his wife, Lynda B. McDaniel of Wilmer; two daughters, Brenda Walker and Dawn Williams, both of Wilmer; three sons, Timothy McDaniel of Hayward, CA, James McDaniel of Wilmer, and Sidney McDaniel of Cleveland, Texas; his mother, Nezalee B. She was a member of Acy's Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Walter J. Ledet of Pine; a son, Vince Ledet and his wife Dodie of Angie; two daughters, Brenda Ledet of Alexandria and Nancy Parks of Newfoundland; a daughter- in-law, Donna Penton of Angie; two brothers, Lee Mitchell of Ocean Springs, MS and Kenneth Mitchell of Alexandria; a sister-in-law, Jean Mitchell of Ocean Springs; three grandchildren, Nicole, Josh, and Bethanie Ledet; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Thomas Robert Askew (Died July 15, 2003) ANGIE n Thomas Robert Askew was a native of Belle River and a lifetime resident of Washington Parish. Born February 9, 1923, he was 80 years old and a very talented carpenter for most of his years. He passed away last night at his home in the presence of his family, and he loved his family dearly. He is survived by a loving wife of 52 years, Gerladine "Jerry" Williams Askew; a daughter, Lynn Askew Ard; a son-in-law, Robbie Ard; and a very special granddaughter, Tiffany Ard whom he loved with all of his heart; and a brother, Wiley Askew, all residents of Angie. Retired from ICG, he was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy on the USS Ticonderoga. A longtime member and deacon of Main Street Baptist Church, he was a member of the American Legion Magic City Post No. 24. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Rowan Warner of Bogalusa; two daughters, Patricia W. Seal of Bogalusa and Anita W. Abbott of Monroe; a son, Roger Wayne Warner of Slidell; three sisters, Bobbye Hughes of Bogalusa, Wilma Seal of Varnado, and Ernestine Seal of Bogalusa; and six grandchildren, Bradley E. Minerva Jane 'Minnie' Dunkin Strickland (Died July 9, 2003) LAFAYETTE n Minerva "Minnie" Jane Dunkin Strickland, 94, a native of Custer City, OK, resident of Hammond for 77 years, and a resident of Bethany Nursing Home for the past two and a half years, died Wednesday in Bethany Nursing Home in Lafayette. Born Dec. 2, 1908 in Custer City to the late Warren and Margaret Gartner Dunkin, she was a prior employee of J.C. Penny and a member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed her family, cooking, sewing and dolls and will be sadly missed by her family. She is survived by a daughter, Marlene (Joe) Sells of Colton, CA; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a niece; and a host of other relatives and special loved ones. Fussell, 87, a resident of Franklinton, died early yesterday in his home. He was recently honored by being elected to Deacon Emeritus status at First Baptist Church were he had served as Chairman of Deacons on several occasions. He was also active in many of the building phases of the church and served as building chairman during three of the church's renovation periods. A Sunday school teacher, he taught various men's classes over the years and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the European Theatre of Operations as a warrant officer. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Lou Fussell of Franklinton; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Warren Cooke of Houma; two grandchildren, Warren II and Kim Cooke of Franklinton and Robin Marie Cooke of Houma; a brother, Eric Fussell of Franklinton; and two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Ashley Cooke. Preceding him in death was his wife, Ora Marie McLain Fussell; and his parents, Murray and Lela Fisher Fussell. Visitation will be held at Crain Funeral Home today from 5-9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted from the funeral home chapel tomorrow at 10 a.m. The Revs. Karl Tingle and John Gilbert will officiate at the service. Burial will be in the Ellis Cemetery. Dora Knight Penton McCain (Died July 2, 2003) FRANKLINTON n Dora Knight Penton McCain, 72, a resident of Mt. Hermon, died at 3:15 p.m. yesterday in Riverside Medical Center. She was a retired cook at Ms. Barber's Café and the widow of N.J. "Goat" McCain. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Leoda Penton of Mt. Hermon, and Jerry and Rosa Penton of Franklinton; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Johnny Dykes of Franklinton; three sisters, Darlene Anthony, Pauline Armour, both of Tickfaw, and Dorothy Gerhold of New Orleans; three brothers, Dennis Knight of Kenner, Thomas Knight, and J.W. Knight, both of Tickfaw; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Edith Anthony Knight; two brothers, Dan Knight and Richard Knight; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Crain Funeral Home from 5-11 p.m. tomorrow and will continue after 8 a.m. Saturday until time of the funeral service, to be conducted from the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Elds. He is survived by his wife, Willean Bickham of Franklinton; two step-sons, Eugene and Floyd Burton of Franklinton; five sisters, Ester Lee Warren of Franklinton, Angie Lee Singletary, Bernice Crain, Mary Booker, and Christine Bickham of New Orleans; one brother, Henry Bickham of New Orleans; two grandchildren, Yolanda Burton and Jeanetta Burton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Walter Ray Sylvest (Died July 1, 2003) FRANKLINTON n Walter Ray Sylvest, 75, a lifelong resident of the Franklinton area, died yesterday in his home in the Fleetwood subdivision in Franklinton. He served as a deacon at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Franklinton and served overseas in the US Air Force during the Korean War. One of the founders of American Ukrainian Fellowship, he was a retired builder, realtor and developer of Lynnwood subdivision, Riverside Shopping Center, and was one of the founders of the Franklinton Area Economic Development Foundation, Inc. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Bronis Magee Sylvest; a daughter, Bambi Sylvest of Baton Rouge; two sons, Walter Sylvest and his wife, Telisa Simmons Sylvest of Franklinton, and Stephen Sylvest and his wife, Debra Averette Sylvest of Mandeville; three grandchildren, Caleb Sylvest, Rebekah Sylvest, and Brady Edwards; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elbert Sylvest of Mandeville, Harold and Minnie Jane Sylvest of Milford, OH, and Richard and Vermelle Sylvest of Hammond; and a sister and brother-in-law, Ray and Ruth Sylvest Mitchell of Slidell. Survivors include her mother, Beola Orr of Pine; a sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Butch and Jackie McVea of Franklinton; three nephews, Dr. Chip and Angela McVea, Jay McVea, all of Franklinton, and Dr. Casey McVea of Kinder; and a niece, Janet and Steven Williams of Houston, Texas.
