Breland (Died June 22, 2003) FRANKLINTON - Murphy J. Breland, age 78, died yesterday at noon in Riverside Medical Center in Franklinton. Born Nov. 26, 1924, he was the son of the late Odis E. and Estelle Baughman Breland, attended Pine High School and was a member of the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. A resident of the Heritage Manor Nursing Home for 16 years, he was a former resident of Pine and had lived all his life in Washington Parish. Uncle Jake, as he was affectionately known to his nieces and nephews, lived a quiet life. He was a kind and gentle man, a loving son, brother, uncle and friend to many. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by two sisters, Odene Burris of Franklinton and Hazel Fauquier of Bogalusa; three brothers, Robert E. Breland of Pine, Billy Ray Breland of Berlin, NJ and Michael G. Breland of Butler, AL; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ada Mae O'Quinn and a brother, Percy H. Breland. Visitation will be held tomorrow at Crain Funeral Home from 9 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Larry Jenkins will officiate, with interment in the Baughman Cemetery at Sheridan. Edith Duncan Brooks (Died June 19, 2003) FRANKLINTON n Edith Duncan Brooks, 52, a resident of Franklinton, died at 10 a.m. Thursday in her home. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lora Brooks of Franklinton; a daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Brad Ledet of Mandeville; two grandsons, Ryan and Justin Payne of Franklinton; six brothers, Monroe Duncan, Clevie Duncan, both of Mt. Hermon, Tommy Duncan of Jackson, Jerry Duncan of Angie, Joda Duncan of Jasper, AR, and Robert Duncan of Bogalusa; two sisters, Molly Ladner of Pine and Lavenia Lilly of Mt. Hermon; and her step-father, Robert Miller of Mt. Hermon. Preceding her in death were her parents, Elmer and Lona Slaven Duncan; and two brothers, Woodrow Duncan and Elwood Duncan. Visitation was held at Crain Funeral Home from 5-10 p.m. Saturday and continued after 10 a.m. yesterday until the funeral service, which was conducted from the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. Burial followed in the Maples Cemetery in Mt. Hermon. Virgil H. Thomas (Died June 19, 2003) MCCOMB, MS n Virgil H. Thomas, 76, a native of Washington Parish and a resident of McComb, died Thursday. Baptized in 1953 as one of Jehovah's witnesses, he served faithfully until his death. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Delores Alford Thomas; his son, Harry Thomas; a daughter-in-law, Pamela Thomas; four grandchildren, Stephen Thomas, Heather Hess, Levi Thomas, and Jennifer Thomas; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Vincent Hess; two brothers; and two sisters. His parents, Ephraim and Meacy Blackwell Thomas, and three brothers preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, 900 South Locust St., McComb. Catchings Funeral Home of McComb is in charge of arrangements. John M. Wood (Died June 23, 2003) FRANKLINTON n John M. Wood, 90, a resident of Franklinton, died early this morning in his home. Crain Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.
