Carter (Died Oct. 28,2003) PLANO, TX. - Verda L. Carter, 92, a former longtime resident of Franklinton, died Tuesday night in her home in Plano, Texas. Carter was preceded in death by Lester B. Ritchie, Odus Smith and T.O. "Buster" Carter. Carter was a member of First Baptist Church. Carter is survived by a son, Ron Ritchie of Plano, and 12 grandchildren. Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday. Penny Thomas Kennedy (Died Oct. 28, 2003) THOMAS - Penny Thomas Kennedy, 40, died at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday in her residence in Thomas. Kennedy was a teacher's aide at Thomas Junior High and a member of Bible Baptist Church. Kennedy is survived by her husband Jody Kennedy and three children, Joseph Kennedy, Jacey Kennedy, and Paris Kennedy; her father J.W. Thomas; and stepmother Peggy Thomas, all of the Thomas area. She is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law Theresa and Kerwin Vogt of Sheridan; Lawanna Thomas, Shone and Bill McNeese of Thomas; Helen and Joey Moore of Improve, MS; a brother and sister-in-law, J.T. and Elisa Thomas of Thomas, numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A devoted wife and loving mother, she retired from the Bogalusa School System as secretary of Long Avenue School and was a faithful member of Ben's Ford Baptist Church, family members said. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Judy and Wyman Gill of Mt. Hermon, and Susan Searcy of Amite; three grandchildren, Amy Bourgeois of Vicksburg, Cliff Searcy III, and Robert Searcy, both of Amite; and several nieces and nephews. Born May 29, 1937 to the late Arner and Cornelia Longino, at an early age she accepted Christ at the Springhill Baptist Church of Silver Creek, MS. United in holy matrimony to Hilbert Lewis Sr., to this union four children were born, Hilbert, Donald, Douglas, and Chrystel-la. Family members said Lewis' children were the joy of her life and she would do anything for them. Lewis later joined Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church were she served faithfully as president of the Senior Mission and Matron of the Junior Choir. She also served as president of the Senior Choir and as a Sunday school teacher. Jessie Billings Huff (Died October 9, 2003) OCEANSIDE, CA n Jessie Billings Huff, 95, a native of Plaquemine Point, former resident of Bogalusa, and a resident of Oceanside, died Thursday in the LSU Regional Medical Center in Bogalusa. Born Nov. 21, 1907, in Plaquemine Point to Ida Mae Langlois Billings and Abram Issac Billings, she came to Bogalusa with her family Jan. 1, 1910. Later that same year her mother died and her father passed away when she was 10 years old. Family members said she was lovingly reared by an older sister, Ida Elizabeth "Lizzie" Carlisle. In 1925, at the age of 18 she went to work at Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company. She retired from the company after 38 years as an operator in 1963. She married William G. "Bill" Huff in 1931. Family members said she was a tireless housekeeper, dedicated wife and loving mother to her only child. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Rodney Ledet of Oceanside, CA; four grandchildren, Lora L. He was a member of Ford's Creek Baptist Church and attended Bethel Baptist Church. A student at Poplarville High School, he loved to fish and play guitar and sing, family members said. He also enjoyed the company of his best friend, Dinh and loved football and four-wheelers. Jessie Billings Huff (Died October 9, 2003) OCEANSIDE, CA n Jessie Billings Huff, 95, a native of Plaquemine Point, former resident of Bogalusa, and a resident of Oceanside, died Thursday in the LSU Regional Medical Center in Bogalusa. Born Nov. 21, 1907, in Plaquemine Point to Ida Mae Langlois Billings and Abram Issac Billings, she came to Bogalusa with her family Jan. 1, 1910. Later that same year her mother died and her father passed away when she was 10 years old. Family members said she was lovingly reared by an older sister, Ida Elizabeth "Lizzie" Carlisle. In 1925, at the age of 18 she went to work at Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company. She retired from the company after 38 years as an operator in 1963. She married William G. "Bill" Huff in 1931. Family members said she was a tireless housekeeper, dedicated wife and loving mother to her only child. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Rodney Ledet of Oceanside, CA; four grandchildren, Lora L. Manzo and husband, Guido of Flemington, NJ, William Alcide and wife Michelle Ledet, Rodney Huey Ledet II and wife, Rosmarie, and Dana Ledet Parrill and husband, Marty, all of Oceanside; and two great-granddaughters, Melanie D. Manzo, who is a junior at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, and Marissa L. Manzo, a junior at Hunterdon Central High School in Flemington. Shirley Temple Jones (Died Oct. 1, 2003) COVINGTON n Shirley Temple Jones, 67, a resident of Franklinton, died yesterday in St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. She is survived by thee sons, Clarence Charles Tribe of Houma, Norman Tribe, and Harvey Tribe, both of Franklinton; two daughters, Debbie Tribe of Florida and Violet Tribe of Franklinton; a sister, Margie Eckles of Tunica, MS; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Glenn Tribe; her second husband, A.G. Jones; a son, David Lee Tribe; a brother, Arthur Stanley; a sister, Margaret Laberron; and her parents, Dike and Dora Ella Baldwin. Visitation will be held tomorrow at Brown-McGehee Funeral Home from 5-10 p.m. and will continue Saturday from 8 a.m. until time of the funeral service, to be conducted from the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. The Rev. Bobby Spears will conduct the service. Burial will follow in the Thomas Cemetery.
