She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a former employee at A&P Tea Co. in Bogalusa. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Jean Hamilton of Pineville and Sandra Earline Hallam of Orlando, FL; two sons, Earl Samuel Hamilton Jr. of Orlando and Richard Craig (Vicki Byrd) Hamilton of Libuse; a sister, Emelda Choppin of Baton Rouge; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Samuel Hamilton Sr.; a brother, Walter Allen McKean; and a sister, Iona McKean Norton. Charles Joseph Henry Sr. (Died Sept. 23, 2003) HARVEY n Charles Joseph Henry Sr., 74, a native of Bogalusa and a resident of Marrero, died Tuesday. He is survived by his wife, Joyce M. Henry; a daughter, Vickie H. Roberts; three sons, Charles J. Henry Jr., Michael D. Henry Sr. and William L. Henry; a sister, June H. Richard; and seven grandchildren, Heath, Blaine, and Hailey Roberts, Chad Allshouse, Mike Henry Jr., and Robert and Nicholas Leone. Preceding him in death were his parents, Arthur E. Henry and Edith Dean Henry; and a brother, William G. Henry. Visitation was held Thursday and Friday at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey. Houston Lee Zachary (Died Sept. 26, 2003) DENHAM SPRINGS - Houston Lee Zachary, 83, a resident of Denham Springs, died Friday at his home. A retired industrial painter, he was a member of Painter's Local No. 728 in Baton Rouge and Canaan Baptist Church in Franklinton. He is survived by his wife, Della G. Zachary of Denham Springs; four sons and two daughters- in-law, Russell and Dot Zachary and Randy and Tony Zachary, all of Kentwood and Larry and Ronnie Zachary, both of Denham Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Gary Hodges of Denham Springs; three brothers, Mack and Billy Zachary, both of Denham Springs and J.B. She was a retired waitress and member of Harmony Missionary Baptist Church. Myrtle Sheridan Ritchie (Died Sept. 26, 2003) BOGALUSA - Myrtle Sheridan Ritchie, 93, a native of Enon and lifelong resident of Bogalusa, died Friday in Slidell. She was a member of First Baptist Church from 1930 to 1940 and had served as the registrar of voters in Washington Parish. As a small business owner she was also a member of the Pleasant Hill Business Association for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warner Ritchie. She is survived by her daughters, Carra Nunez and Rebecca Cahill; sons-in-law, Gene Nunez and Jack Cahill; and grandchildren, Jimmy Miller, Heather Beeckman, Cara and Anne Marie Cahill and Natalie Nunez. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Carrie Lillian and Edward Dawson 'King' Sheridan; brothers, James, Richard, Emery, Walter and Truet Sheridan; and sisters, Zoenetta Rester, Myrtis Lewis, Joyce Traylor and Willetta Kennedy. Michael Jovon Dillon (Died Sept. 25, 2003) NEW ORLEANS - Michael Jovon Dillon, 28, a resident of New Orleans, died Thursday at Ochsner Medical Center. He was a medical technician and member of Hayes Chapel United Methodist Church in Franklinton. He is survived by his parents, Michael and Alberta Robertson Dillon of Franklinton; two sisters, Katrina Johnson of Hammond and Amanda Dillon of Franklinton; four uncles; seven aunts; two nephews; a niece ; and a foster brother, Ja'Mikal Baker of Bogalusa. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Hermon; one grandson, Darryl Brumfield Sr. of Oakland, CA; three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Aliyah and Darryl Brumfield Jr., also of Oakland; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Born May 24, 1927 to the late Ruff and Mattie Jackson, he was a veteran of the Korean War. John Joseph Otzenberger Jr. (Died September 22, 2003) RIO n John Joseph Otzenberger Jr., 76, a resident of the Rio community, died yesterday. He was a retired carpenter and in years past was the owner/operator of a home-based sawmill. Survivors include a devoted sister, Fern Forbes of Sandy Hook, MS; a nephew, Patrick Leemans of Rio, who he saw as a son; as well as many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph Sr. and Odelia Jenkins Otzenberger; two sisters, Pandora Leemans and Gayzella Otzenberger; and a brother, William Otzenberger. In accordance with his request and arrangements he made many years ago, his body has been donated for medical research. "Junior" will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by those who knew and loved him, family members said. Bessie Bradford Brown (Died September 10, 2003) LOS ANGELES, CA - Funeral services were held Sept. 15 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Los Angeles for Bessie Bradford Brown, 97, a resident of Los Angeles and former resident of Angie, LA, who died Sept. 10 at Centinela Medical Center in Inglewood. Because her father was a Methodist minister, her early childhood was spent in various towns in Louisiana. When he died in 1924, her mother moved the family to New Orleans, LA. After graduating from McDonald 35 High School, she earned a teaching certificate from New Orleans University and a bachelor's degree at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. She began her career as an educator in 1923 at Woodlawn/Bertie, LA, when her father, who was pastor of a church there, established the first school for black children in the area. She was 17 and a student at Southern. Her career spanned more than 37 years most of which was spent at Live Oak Elementary and Wesley Ray High School in Angie and at Thomas Elementary in Thomas, LA. She was an active member of Wesley Ray United Methodist Church in Angie for many years and participated in numerous community and civic activities in Washington Parish. In 1971, she and husband, Oliver B. Brown Sr., moved to Los Angeles and joined Wesley United Methodist Church where she was an active member until her death. She is survived by a son, Oliver B. She graduated from Bogalusa High School and attended LA Normal College in Natchitoches. She and Elton started their own company, White Business Machines, where they both worked until they retired in 1979 and the business was turned over to Elton's son, Billy Ray White. Mary was a dedicated member of the Elizabeth Sullivan Memorial Methodist Church and a member of the Oushola Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She attended elementary school in Angie and high school at Gilbert Academy in New Orleans until it closed after her junior year, and graduated from McDonald No. 35 High School in New Orleans. She later received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education form Dillard University in New Orleans, a masters of education degree from Wayne state University in Detroit, MI, and did post-graduate studies at Xavier University in New Orleans and Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. Sutherland began a successful educator's career in 1954 as a teacher at Central Memorial High School in Bogalusa. A year later, she moved to New Orleans and taught there until 1965 when she and her family moved to Carson. She then continued her educator's career in the Long Beach Unified School District in Long Beach, CA, retiring as a principal in 1995. Active in numerous civic, professional, and social organizations including the NAACP, The Links Inc., and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Compton, serving on and heading many committees and programs. He was a retired terminal superintendent for Delta Steamship Lines with 45 years of service. He was also a veteran of World War II having served in the Army Air Corps. A retired area supervisor with Western Electric (AT&T), he was a member of Telephone Pioneers of American, a US Army veteran of World War II and Korea and was a member of the Home Magee Post No. 113 American Legion in Franklinton and the VFW Post No. 1400. He was also a member of the Fairfield Masonic Lodge No. 425 and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 211 in Baton Rouge. Following his retirement, he became well known for his hobby of raising and selling parakeets and was a member of the American, New Orleans, and Central Louisiana Budgerigan Societies. Willie Mae Mitchell Willis (Died August 28, 2003) BOGALUSA n Wilda Mae Mitchell Willis, widow of Otto Willis and beloved mother of Joby, Johnny, and Jimmy Willis, died at her residence Thursday. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Born Nov. 17, 1915, she lived all her 87 years in the Rio Community within miles of her birthplace. Wilda Mae used her life, and achieved her bliss, serving and shepherding her family, encouraging them to perform the duties of their lives circumscribed within the boundaries of brotherly love, truth, charity, fortitude, prudence, temperance, and justice. Her family said she was talented with many interests, including an appreciation for the arts and talented people. Her talents reflected her independent, self-reliant personality. She enjoyed music, playing the piano, reading, sewing, cooking, flower and vegetable gardening, and raising livestock. With self-sufficient determination, she could manage any problem encountered in her chosen life as a homemaker on the farm in rural Rio. Leaving to mourn her death, in addition to her three sons, a sister , Billy Rose Ruddick, two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and a host of adoring kinsmen. Chapel services will be conducted at Brown-McGehee Funeral Home in Bogalusa at 3:30 p.m. today. Visitation will be today from noon until the the service. A Christian, since youth, who remembered her baptism in a local creek, Wilda Mae will be interred at the cemetery of the Palestine Baptist Church, her church since birth.
