Louise McCart Palmer (Died Feb. 24, 2004) BOGALUSA n Louise McCart Palmer, 82, a long-term resident of Bogalusa, died Tuesday evening in her home. She is survived by her Maltese, Sweetie; three daughters, Bobby Kay Palmer of New Orleans, Jackie Palmer of Metairie, and Patsy (Clifford) Jeffcoat of Augusta, GA; a sister, Sammie (Buck) Grantham of Elba, AL; a brother, Mack (Nellie) McCart of Milton, FL; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her three sisters and two brothers. Visitation will be held at Brown-McGehee Funeral Home today from 2-6 p.m. and will continue tomorrow from 8 a.m. until time of the funeral service, to be conducted from the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. The Rev. Laura Ann Patterson Garrett (Died Feb. 23, 2004) MANDEVILLE n Laura Ann Patterson Garrett, 60, a resident of Heritage Manor Nursing Home and former resident of Franklinton, died Monday in Lakeview Medical Center in Mandeville. She was a former employee for the Bogalusa Medical Center for numerous years, working 30 years at Riverside Medical Center in the capacity of nursing assistant, secretary to the Director of Nursing and later promoted and retired from the position of Supervisor of Housekeeping. She was past president of the Jolly 12 Service Club and Past Matron of Sunflower Chapter 44 Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband, Melvin Garrett; two daughters, Vicki Patterson of Franklinton and Terri Lynn Traylor of Dallas, TX ; four sons, Melvin Garrett Jr. of Franklinton, George (Alice) Garrett of Bogalusa, Michael Garrett of Baton Rouge, and Ervin Garrett of Houston, TX; three sisters, Gloria J. Jessie Lee Fussell Erwin (Died February 23, 2004) FRANKLINTON n Jessie Lee Fussell Erwin, 91, a resident of Franklinton, died at 11:58 p.m. yesterday in Heritage Manor in Franklinton. She was a member of the Fisher United Methodist Church and the widow of James Arnold Erwin. Grace Nolan Thompson (Died February 20, 2004) BOGALUSA - Grace Nolan Thompson, 86, a resident of Bogalusa, died Friday night at the LSU Medical Center in Bogalusa. She was a member of Superior Avenue Baptist Church. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Cecile Thompson of Bogalusa; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and M.R. Anders Jr. of Meridian, MS; two granddaughters and their husbands, Donna Ahlrich and Paul of Columbus, MS, and Diane Freeman and J.B. of Meridian, MS; six great-grandchildren, Graham, Nolan, Carley and Jami Ahlrich, all of Columbus, and Tripp and Maggie Freeman, both of Meridian; and a special friend, Ann Bennett. Essley James Miley (Died February 15, 2004) LAFAYETTE n Essley James Miley, 44, a native of Bogalusa and longtime resident of Lafayette, died Sunday in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette of cancer. He was a dedicated counselor employed by the State of Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals as a social services counselor supervisor of The First-Step Detoxification Unit at the University Medical Center, Lafayette. He also worked at Crowley Addictive Disorder Unit, and The Peltier-Lawless Development Center and was a member of The Louisiana State Board of Substance Abuse Counselors, chair of The Region IV Quality Assurance Committee, member of The Region IV Cultural and Spiritual Diversity Committee, and certified state investigator for client neglect and abuse. A state certified trainer in management of aggressive behavior, he was a member of the Region IV Training Committee. Survivors include his beloved life partner, Don Richard of Lafayette; his mother, Della S. Miley of Angie; a brother, Jewell Ray Miley of Varnado; and a sister, Shirley Miley Meskill of Germany. Preceding him in death was his father, Leland J. Miley. He was a member of Acey's Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy K. Hines; two sons, Brian Scott (Kim) Hines of Bogalusa, and Clayton (Terri) Hines Jr. of Denham Springs; two daughters, Juan (Ricky) Kellar of Pearl River and Renea Usell of Slidell; two stepsons, Michael (Anita) Davis of Bogalusa and Rodney Davis of Bogalusa; a step-daughter, Sandra Davis of Bogalusa; a sister, Ida Nell (Billy) Wright of Franklinton; two brothers, Rev. Dressner, 62, a resident of Bogalusa, died of cancer yesterday in her home. She was a member of Superior Avenue Baptist Church and retired from National Food Story when it moved from Bogalusa. She then continued working at Whites Auto Store and Western Auto before cancer eventually forced her into retirement. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Ed Dressner of Bogalusa; a son, Marlon Dean Harwell of Bogalusa; four stepsons, Alan, Ronald, Robert, and Eric Dressner, all of Bogalusa; her mother, Martha m. Crain of Bogalusa; and a cousin, Merrita Jones of Bogalusa. Preceding her in death was her father, Clyde Crowe. Mary Kathryn Evans (Died Feb. 17, 2004) SLIDELL n Mary Kathryn Evans, 86, a native of Martin, TN, and a resident of Bogalusa, died Tuesday in North Shore Regional Medical Center in Slidell. She attended Vanderbilt University and Rhodes College and was president of the Bogalusa Civic League and active member of the First Presbyterian Church for 57 years. She participated in the Presbyterian Women and made wonderful banners for the church, family members said, adding, she was also an accomplished seamstress who loved to play bridge and was kind and accepting and loved all her family. She is survived by a son, William S. Evans of Bogalusa; trhee daughters, Mary Jo Lundy of Santa Faye, NM, Ann Williams of McAllen, Texas, Jane Knight of Slidell; a brother, Franklin Cletus Ellis of Memphis, TN; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, R.S. "Smikey" Evans; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Allison Evans. Byrd (Died Feb. 15, 2004) LUBBOCK, TX n Pete T. Byrd, 82, a resident of the Byrd's Chapel community, died Sunday in the University Medical Center in Lubbock. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and later in the United States Air Force for 23 years. He then worked in civil service as a contacting officer in Abilene, TX and retired to the Byrd's Chapel community in 1975 where he put his skills to work in the church building committee that established the current parsonage. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mildred Byrd; three sons, Kenneth Byrd, Gary Byrd, and David Byrd; a sister, Bernice Vines; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Ashley Elizabeth Brumfield (Died February 14, 2004) WEST MONROE - Ashley Elizabeth Brumfield, 19, a resident of West Monroe, died yesterday from complications caused by her battle with cancer. She was born April 11, 1984, in Franklinton, but lived the majority of her life in West Monroe. She graduated from West Monroe High School and was attending Louisiana Tech University where she was pursuing a degree in nursing, so she could help others in need. She is survived by her mother and step-father, Deana and Johnny Mitchell; a sister, Kaitlyn Mitchell; her father, T. Elder Charles Earl Quillen (Died February 8, 2004) DECATUR, GA - Elder Charles Earl Quillen, 58, a native of Bogalusa and a resident of Atlanta, GA, died Sunday evening in the V.A. Hospital in Decatur. For the past 30 years he had lived in California, New Jersey, New York, Texas and Georgia. The genesis of his preaching vocation commenced in 1968 in the church of his late father, Bishop Howard Ellis Quillen Sr. His educational background includes a bachelor of arts degree from California State University, and a master of divinity degree from John C. Smith Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Atlanta, GA. He also pursued further studies at Columbia University in New York. While at Princeton he participated in the Pastoral Mentoring Field Service Initiative Sponsored by Princeton Theological Seminary. In addition to pasturing for the last 25 years in the Church of God in Christ, He had been active in educational and community issues, serving as a member (vice-president) of the Board of Education in Southampton, NY and as a senior chaplain at the Long Island Correctional Facility. As a preacher of distinction he had served as Conference Preacher at the Hampton University Minister's Conference in Hampton, VA and the Prairie View A&M University Minister's Conference in Prairie, Texas. He served his country in the United States Army and served time in Alaska. Ellison "Jinx" Jenkins, 78, a resident of Bailey Street in Marsh Hill, died Tuesday in his home following an extended illness. Born in New Orleans to the late Lt. Col. Daniel P. Jenkins Sr. and Mildred Ellison Jenkins. His father, a Baptist minister and Army chaplain, developed his love of music, church leadership and storytelling. His mother, a homemaker and community leader, encouraged his desire to always be learning. In addition, his aunt, an elementary school principal, nurtured his interest in fine arts. He was graduated form the Academy of Richmond County, GA in 1942 and then attended the Junior College of Augusta until he was called to military duty. Serving in the US Navy during World War II in the US and European Theaters as a Storekeeper (Aviation) Second Class, after completing his service, he resumed his college education. In 1949 he was graduated from Furman University. While there he met his wife, Margaret Dixie Hollowell of Hendersonville, NC, a fellow student. In 1954 he completed his Doctorate in Theology at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where his parents had met on their first day there as students. Jinx was a professor of religion and philosophy for 45 years at Mars Hill College, and during his career there, eh also taught English, French, history and sociology. He was an active member of Mars Hill Baptist Church where until very recently he served as a deacon, choir member, Sunday school teacher and special friend to children. An opera lover, history buff, art appreciator and avid exerciser, he was a life-long optimist, battling various types of cancer for 12 years without complaint, while remaining active. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel P. Jenkins Jr., and a sister, Carolyn Jenkins White. He is survived by his daughter, Augusta Jenkins Gladding and her husband Walt of Mars Hill; a sister, "Jinx" Christie Duke and her husband Hoyt of Augusta; a sister-in-law, Patsy Jenkins Moore of Cusseta, GA; seven nieces; two nephews; and numerous cousins. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Mars Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Tommy Justus and Jerry Jarrell officiating. Lewis Edgar Mizell (Died January 28, 2004) BOGALUSA n Lewis Edgar Mizell, 90, a resident of Bogalusa, died Wednesday in LSU Medical Center in Bogalusa. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Heino and husband Paul of Boynton Beach, FL; a son and daughter-in-law, Edgar Larry Mizell and wife Patricia of Bogalusa; five grandchildren, Kevin Mizell of Bogalusa, Kim Mathis of Ft. Mill, SC, Kristen Manning of Denham Springs, Bridges Brown of Carrollton, Texas, and Todd Smith of St. Francisville; and 13 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death was his wife, Irma Mizell; and his parents, Steve and Francis Mizell. Visitation will be held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home today from 5:30-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. The Revs. B.V. Alford and Ed Jenkins will officiate at the service. Interment will follow in the Mizell Cemetery. Jean Magee Warren (Died January 29, 2004) COVINGTON n Jean Magee Warren, 80, a resident of Franklinton, died at 5:15 a.m. yesterday in St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. She was the longtime owner of The Fashion Shop in Franklinton and was the widow of John P. Warren and a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, John Ira Warren and Dr. Stephen and Nina Warren, both of Franklinton; a daughter, Cathy W. and Barry Stringfield of Franklinton; three sisters, Maudine Knight, Virginia Bryan, both of Franklinton, and Bessie Schumacker of Baton Rouge; a brother, Richard "Dick" Magee of Franklinton; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William Eugene and Clara Bateman Magee; three sisters, Vickie Holmes, Clairice Richardson, and Alyene Consterdine; and a brother, William Bill Magee. Visitation will be held at Crain Funeral Home from 9 a.m. tomorrow until time of the funeral service, to be conducted from the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. The Rev. Randy Simmonds and Dr. Gene Richards will officiate at the service. Burial will follow in the Ellis Cemetery. Cody Aaron Sheridan (Died January 28, 2004) COVINGTON n Cody Aaron Sheridan, 18, went to be with the Lord Wednesday in St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington of bacterial meningitis. He was a 2003 honor graduate of Bogalusa High School and a 2003 member of the Lumberjack football, baseball, and basketball teams. A member of Lee's Creek Baptist Church, he was employed by Bogalusa Lumber Company. Sheridan was the much loved son of Shelly and Robyn Sheridan of Bogalusa, grandson of Virgil Hunt, Mary Kay Hunt, and Barbara Stogner, all of Bogalusa. He also had many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Shelly Sheridan Sr.; and his great-grandparents, Maxiel and Mary Hunt and Jason and Lillie Seal; and a cousin, Scott Hunt. Visitation was held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from 4-10 p.m. yesterday and will continue today from 9 a.m. until time of the funeral service, to be conducted from the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Bro. Joshua Smith will officiate at the service. Interment will be in the Lee's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
