As a humble champion for justice and equality, Dawson labored to open doors closed to African Americans, his family said. He was the first president of the Local 189A Paper Workers Union (the white union was Local 189) at Crown Zellerbach, now known as Temple Inland. He filed the first injunction to integrate CZ cafeteria and bathroom facilities and traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the negotiations between the U.S. government and CZ to end racial discrimination at the plant. This resulted in the two unions merging and afforded blacks the opportunity to become millwrights and pipe fitters, jobs previously denied. During his eight-year tenure as NAACP president, he exercised his belief that African Americans deserved to have a voice in their community. Using legal avenues, he fought for Africans Americans to have equal opportunities to serve on the Bogalusa City Council, school board and police jury. He also aligned investing in the youth with investing in the future, family members said. He provided scholarships for students in Washington Parish as president of the Coney Flowers American Legion Post No. 547. He also sent boys to the Boys State Conference and sponsored youths to participate in summer programs offered by Christian Brothers for a Change. In 1987, he was noted as one of the most influential men in Washington Parish, relatives said. His family called him "a pioneer in our times" and said his life is a "testament to his family and others of what it means to take ownership and responsibility for your life and community." He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Ola Mae Dawson; and a brother, Edgar Dawson Jr. Survivors include Theda Dawson and Dorothy Johnson, both of Bogalusa; six children, Donnie Ray (Bonnie) Dawson of San Antonio, Texas, Janice Dawson Richard of Slidell, Louis Charles (Doris) Dawson, Debra Dawson Roberts and Dana Dawson, all of Bogalusa, and Donna Dawson of Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Curtis Lee Pearson of New Orleans and Mamie Williams of Gulfport, MS; a brother, Archie (Barbara) Dawson of San Jose, CA; 15 grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends. Virginia Anne 'Ginger' Martin Johnson (Died March 20, 2004) SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS n Virginia Anne "Ginger" Martin Johnson, 67, a native of New Orleans and a former resident of Bogalusa, went to be with the Lord March 20 after a long and difficult battle with cancer. Born Nov. 30, 1938, in New Orleans, she spent most of her childhood in Bogalusa, attending school there and completing grades 1st-12th, with many of her schoolmates going thru all 12 years with her. This resulted in friendships that lasted a lifetime. Family members said Johnson was blessed with a loving relationship with her parents, aunt, uncle, and cousins, adding, "She was a gift of God to her family. Her childhood was as special as she was. Ginger could remember in detail what she wore and what she did as a young girl." After high school, she went to Texas to attend Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas. Her mother taught dancing which attributed to her being gifted in ballet and ballroom dance. She loved music, especially the big band sound of the 40s and 50s, family members said. A horse lover, she had once been heard saying that she thought all Texans had a horse ranch. While at TWU, she met her soul mate, Donald Johnson, a Texas Aggie in senior boots. She fell in love and married in 1957. They had 47 years together. After her husband served a short tour in the Army, she helped support him in graduate school at Texas A&M and Tufts University Medical School. While in graduate school, her two children, Dianna and David were born. Donald finally finished school and started to work in 1962 in San Antonio. Ginger learned that not all Texans rode horses or had ranches and worked hard to achieve that goal for her family. The remainder of her life she raised, trained, and showed horses on a ranch near Boerne and later on a ranch near Comfort. She also had longhorn cattle and enjoyed seeing the new calf's each spring and giving them all names. As much as she loved people and horses, she always had dogs as her companions. Ginger was an excellent equestrian for both Western and English style riding, family members noted. Her horses competed in halter, Western pleasure and cutting. One of her Appaloosa mares won the Texas championship two years in a row and placed in the top 10 mares at the National finals. Ginger's love for horses began as a child and the love remained strong to the end. One of her interests in life was antiques, especially early American. For several years she owned and operated a small antique shop in Boerne. When she was going through difficult health problems at home, she was always encouraged by a trip to get her nails and hair done. She used this time to chat with her lady friends about all the news in Comfort. Ginger loved her family, and especially her two grandchildren, family members said, adding, "She was a people-person, she enjoyed talking to people, no matter if it was a grocery clerk, a horse trainer, or a good friend. She was a child of God, and a classy lady. She was a believer in Jesus Christ as her Lord and she has gone home to be with him and to see her loved ones that have gone before her." She is survived by her beloved husband, Donald E. Johnson; daughter, Dianna L. Johnson; son, David L. Johnson; two grandchildren, Amanda Johnson and Emma Johnson; and adopted son, Marty Villanueva. A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North with the Rev. Bill Shockley officiating.
