Glen W. Blackwell Died August 1, 2001 08/03/01 Email this story to a friend NATCHEZ, MS - Glen W. Blackwell, 76, a resident of Natchez, MS died Wednesday at Our Lady of The Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge. He was born July 9, 1925, in Bogalusa where he completed high school and, at age 17, entered the Navy. After returning he completed courses at LSU in industrial supervision and management, then studied management at the University of South Alabama. He was a specialist in safety supervision and conducted the safety training program for the International Paper machinists. He retired from International Paper Company in Natchez in 1985, after 36 years, the latter 20 years being in management. During those years he completed the full line of progression in paper making. In his last three years before retirement he coordinated, planned and implemented a number of machine improvements that resulted in quality and production excellence. He was a consultant for the startup and some special projects for International Paper Company nationwide.Blackwell's community involvement was widely recognized throughout the Mississippi. He was a very active member of First Baptist Church, where he served on numerous committees and was a member of the Freeman's Men Sunday School Class. He was also a member of all the Masonic Bodies and was an active member of Shriners, serving on various fund raising events to further the work of the Crippled Children's Hospital and burn center. He worked with families, filling out the admission paperwork and providing transportation to and from the hospitals for treatment and admission. Years ago, he was a member of the Quarter Century Club of International Paper Company and was a special deputy for the Adams County Sheriff's Department.His unending compassion for others was seen through his volunteerism for the Leukemia Society, the American Heart Association, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Natchez Children's Home. He was recognized for his charity in being selected as the "Ageless Hero" by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of MS in 1999 and was presented an award by Art Linkletter during a luncheon in his honor. His hobbies in recent years have included the study of the Natchez Indians and their historical significance.He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nell Nix Blackwell of Natchez; a son, Ronnie Glen Blackwell of Natchez; two daughters, Suzanne Blackwell Vivier and her husband, Pat of Clinton, MS and Glynda White and her husband, Kelly of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren, Katie Blackwell, Glynne Blackwell, Shane Hamann, LauraLee Hamann and Kelsey White; and a sister, Doris Varnado of Meridan, MS.Preceding him in death was his brother, Jim Blackwell.Visitation will be today at Laird Funeral Home, Union Street Chapel from 5-7 p.m. and will continue tomorrow from 10 a.m. until time of service at First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Rev. She was born 13 March 1923.To mourn her death, she leaves behind her loving husband of 54 years, Harold F. Chol. Completing a successful career working with the accounting department at the Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill in Bogalusa, Louisiana, Lucille, in 1982, departed the American workplace and retired to her country estate to fully pursue other interests she had postponed for so many years.Her involvement with community affairs increased after retirement -- continuing until recently becoming debilitated several weeks ago by her last siege of illness. Walker Died August 5, 2001 08/06/01 BOGALUSA - On August 5, 2001, this sweet gentle man passed through heaven's gate after a short battle with pancreatic and liver cancer. He proudly served his country during WWII as a Higgins boat driver for the Navy on the Pacific front of Okinawa. During the was he injured his back but returned to the fight to finish out the was. His navy "buddies" meet faithfully once a year in all parts of the United States for their reunion. This brought him immense happiness to be with these men once a year. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.He gave 40 hard working years to Gaylord as one of their top welders. He also had the responsibility of training all new rookie welders for Gaylord in his last years of employment. He is a member of the Masons of Varnado as well as, a prior member of the Shriner's. He believed very strongly in the work of the Shrine ofr children and enjoyed very much being apart of this wonderful organization. After his retirement, he and his beloved wife, AnnaMae, traveled in their motorhome touring the United States including Alaska. Traveling and meeting people was his biggest enjoyment. He most loved showing everyone he met his mind boggling hand carved wooden puzzles and tricks. He enjoyed attending Superior Avenue Baptist Church when at home.He will be sadly missed by his wife AnnaMae David Walker; his sons, Michael (Dana) Walker and Timothy (Stacy) Walker. As well as, a special niece, Christi David Brennan and her husband Bernie. He leaves behind a host of grandchildren; Michael's children: Aaron Michael, Forrest, Jordan, and Joshua Walker. Timothy's children: Scotty and Tracey Walker. Christi children: Nicholas and James Michael Brennan. His great-grandchildren are Ainsley Reviere and Mason Day. Lawrence Sr., died Wednesday, August 8, 2001, at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans.Lawrence was born in Cheraw, Mississippi, and moved to Bogalusa with her family shortly after graduating from Columbia High School. Before starting a family and becoming a housewife and mother, Lawrence was private secretary to former local telephone manager David Ulmer.Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 11, at the Church of United Faith on Marshall Richardson Road. The deceased will lie in state from 4 until 10 p.m. on Friday, August 10, in the chapel of the Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home in Bogalusa. The Rev. Jimmy Van Winkle, Mrs. Lawrence's pastor, and the Rev. Gene Simpkins will officiate at the funeral.Lawrence was a long time and active member of the First Baptist Church of Bogalusa and taught Sunday school for high school girls for several years there. She was also active as a Cub Scout Den Mother and Camp Fire leader. She took an active role in the Parent Teacher's Association at Pleasant Hill School where she served one term as secretary and two terms as president. While living with her son, Robert, in Slidell during her lengthy Illness, she regularly attended Christ Episcopal Church with family members.Two sons, Robert D. "Bob" Lawrence Jr. of Slidell and Gerald P. "Pat" Lawrence Sr., of Mobile, Alabama, and one daughter, Rebecca Lawrence Clark of Terrytown, survive Lawrence. He was married for 65 years and a member of Westside Emmanuel Baptist Church. He worked for 40 years, since 1977, for Crown Zellerbach Paper. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.He is survived by his wife, Willie Mae Morris Wascom of Bogalusa; a son, D. The couple retired in Florida in the early 70's his wife, Elvera died in 1978. He later married Helen Johnson in 1979, who also preceded him in death in 1990. He married Marian Alinder on June 7, 1997 in Ottawa, MN. He was a charter member and first council member of Good Shepard United Church of Christ in St. Charles, MO. She was a resourceful, dependable, and loving woman, Sister Wyre faithfully served her church and community. He was a graduate of Bogalusa High School, Class of '46, served in the U.S. Air Force and graduated from Louisiana Polytechnical Institute in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He was a retired mechanical engineer.He is survived by his two daughters, Gary "Mary Lynn" Reynaud of Morgan City and Phil "Becky" Sauls of Zebulon, NC; a brother, Alra E. Jerome 'Jerry' Gerold Greene Sr. Died August 18, 2001 08/22/01 NEW ORLEANS - Jerome 'Jerry' Gerold Greene Sr., 98, a resident of New Orleans died Saturday in Memorial Medical Center, Mercy Campus. He was a jazz pioneer and former employee of New Orleans Public Service, Inc. He was born in Maringouin and lived in New Orleans for many years. He was among New Orleans' oldest living jazz musicians, he played the tuba, bass and banjo. Greene played nationally and internationally with Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne and Cab Galloway. He also played with local musicians, including Papa Celestine, Louie Nelson, Alvin Alcorn, Clyde Kerr Sr., Joe Phillips, Sidney Desvigne, Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, Percy and Willie Humphrey and Louis Catrell. He performed with The Eurka Brass Band, The Original Tuxedo Band, the Onward Brass Band and The William Houston Orchestra. He played at every New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival until 1998, when he made his last appearance at age 94. Jazz historian Michael G. White hired Greene to play in his band 17 years ago. "He was a serious musician who maintained a sense of humor," White said. "He had a steady, driving rhythm. He had musical standards and practiced and listened to records late in life."Greene played at Carnegie Hall, Preservation Hall, the Kentucky Derby and numerous festivals and concerts around the world, including appearances in France, Switzerland and Canada and several in Japan. He appeared in several motion pictures, including "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman," "The Drowning Pool," "Mandingo" and "Freedom Road."Greene received the Jazz Living Legion Award. He was a former officer of the American Federation of Musicians Union Local No. 174-496, the Screen Actors Guild, the N.O.U.ites and the Couple Club. He was a graduate of New Orleans University High School and Electricity Electrical School.
