Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the chapel of the Poole Funeral Home with the Rev. P. M. Caraway officiating. Interment was in Ponemah cemetery. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Inez Lancaster; one son, Sam Lancaster, Jr., one brother, Morgan Lancaster of Raymond, Miss., and one sister, Mrs. J. W. Neil of Memphis, Tenn. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-02-1949 Lott Boy Died Here on Thursday Jimmy Edward Lott, 6-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie E. Lott of 1516 Jackson Street, died at his home at 11 a.m. Thursday of pneumonia and other complications after a lingering illness of several months duration. Funeral services were conducted at the Lott home at 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Ernest Seal officiating. Interment was in Rester Cemetery near Varnado with the Brown Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Besides his parents, the child is survived by four sisters, Margie, Bernell, Madilen and Mary Lou Lott, all at home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-02-1949 Nelson Child Died Wednesday Delores Elaine Nelson, 2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Caron Nelson of Sun, died at the family home at 3:2 p.m. on Wednesday. Funeral services were scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Sun Baptist church with the Rev. Rappe officiating. Interment will be in Sun cemetery. Besides its parents, the child is survived by a 6-year-old brother, Thomas K. Nelson. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-02-1949 Mrs. McManus Funeral Today Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Pearl River for Mrs. Laura Crawford McManus, 76, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Selma Holcomb, in Pearl River at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The Rev. Roussaux will officiate and interment will be in the Crawford cemetery near Slidell. Mrs. McManus is survived by one son, Rudolph McManus; one daughter, Mrs. Holcombe; three brothers, Henry and Luther Crawford, all of Pearl River, and Lindsley Crawford of Bush; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Peterson, Slidell, and Mrs. Josie Seymour, San Antonio, Texas; 6 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-02-1949 Brother of Mrs. Newchurch Died Mr. Allen F. Simoneaux died suddenly at his home in Vacherie, La., Wednesday afternoon at 3:40 p.m. He was the brother of Mrs. George Newchurch of Avenue H, and an uncle of Clifton Simoneaux of the Pine community. Funeral services were held on Saturday morning at 9:30 o’clock at St. Philip Catholic church, Vacherie, La. Mr. Simoneaux had visited in Bogalusa on several occasions. He was at the time of this death, chief engineer at Armant Plantation in Vacherie. The deceased is survived by his wife, four daughters, four sons, two brothers and his sister, Mrs. Newchurch. Mr. and Mrs. Newchurch, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Simoneaux, left for Vacherie immediately upon being notified of the death of Mr. Simoneaux. They returned to Bogalusa Saturday afternoon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-02-1949 Services Held for Tom Byrd Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Pierce cemetery for Warren Thomas Byrd, 64, who died at his home at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday following a long illness. Mr. Byrd was a native of Washington parish and has been a farmer near Rio for nearly 20 years. Officiating at the funeral was the Rev. John Rappe. The services were followed by burial in the same cemetery with Poole Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Byrd is survived by his widow, Mrs. Myrtle Magee Byrd of Rio; two daughters, Mrs. Wilfred White of New Orleans and Mrs. Hollis Bynum of Baton Rouge, and one son, Thomas Dorman Byrd, who lives near his father’s home. He is also survived by six brothers, J. L., H. L. R. Y. Herman and E. H. Byrd, all of this vicinity, and Leslie Byrd of McComb, Miss., and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Smith of Derby, Miss and Mrs. J. W. Doremus and former resident of this city and of Franklinton, died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the home of her son in Jackson, Miss. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) from the chapel of the Poole Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Lane, pastor of the First Methodist church of Jackson, officiating. Interment will be in Ponemah cemetery. Mrs. Doremus is survived by one son, D. C. Doremus, Jr. and one sister, Mrs. A. H. Daugudrill. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-02-1949 Funeral Held for Mrs. Hampton Funeral services wee conducted Wednesday morning at 10:00 o’clock for Mrs. Hezzie Magee Hampton, widow of the late Joe Hampton and former resident of this city, who died in Houston, Tex., at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday after several months illness. Mrs. Hampton and her husband, who was a NOGN railroad conductor, lived in Bogalusa for a number of years and at Angie, where she and her son, Joe, Jr. operated a store. Several years ago, they moved to Baton Rouge, and early this year had gone to Houston to live. The body was brought here on Tuesday and carried to the home of Mrs. W. T. McNeese at Angie until the funeral at the Angie Baptist church. Interment was in the Angie cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-02-1949 Mrs. Gladys Miller Dies from Injuries Mrs. Gladys Burch Miller, 40, died at 11:26 a.m. Saturday in the Tylertown, Miss. Hospital from injuries sustained when a tractor fell on her last week at her home near Mt. Hermon. Mrs. Miller was driving the tractor home from the field and was discovered about 30 minutes after the accident pinned her beneath the tractor by her husband. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Pisgah church with the Rev. Ronald Hill officiating. Interment was in Mt. Pisgah cemetery with Poole Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband, Denman Miller; two sons, James and Wesley Miller; one daughter, Beatrice Miller; five brothers, Milford, A.W., Dorman, and Donnie Burch all of Mt. Hermon and Wilson Burch, police juror of Franklinton; four sisters Mrs. Clara Mae Alford, Mrs. Willie Burch Wilkes and Miss Irma Lee Burch, all of Mt. J. Kergosien Died Funeral services were conducted Sunday in Bay St. Louis fro Mrs. Lavinia E. Kergosien, widow of the late Dr. A. A. Kergosien. The 68-year-old lifelong resident of Bay St. Louis died at the King’s Daughter’s hospital after remaining a patient there for about a week with a heart attack, which was followed by a cerebral hemorrhage. The funeral was at the Lady of the Gulf Catholic church, with interment following in St. Mary’s cemetery. Mrs. Kergosien is survived by eight children, one of whom is E. J. Kergosien, of this city, and 21 grandchildren. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-09-1949 Soldier Buried This A.M. Here Funeral services were conducted today (Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Church of God on Warren Street for Army Recruit Jewell D. Brady, 35-year-old Bogalusan, who died of fire wounds Sunday at Camp Chaffee, Fort Smith, Ark. Brady was seriously burned about the body while fighting a fire in the administration building of the army camp. The body of the soldier arrived here Wednesday morning aboard the Rebel and was taken to the Church of God, where it was lain in state. The train was met by Mayor Curt Siegelin, who placed a wreath on the casket in behalf of the city, and a delegation from the American Legion. The Legion was in charge of military rites at the Veterans Plot in Ponemah Cemetery this morning when Recruit Brady was buried. The Rev. W. R. Fowler officiated at the service, and Brown Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Brady is survived by his mother, Mrs. Emma Brady, 1104 Warren Street; three brothers, Lawrence and Dewey Brady of Bogalusa, and Audie Brady of Jackson, Miss.; and one sister, Mrs. Dwight Beard, a resident of the Terrace. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-09-1949 Jas. Davis was Buried Monday Death Saturday at noon ended nine months of suffering by Jas. A. “Uncle Jim” Davis the sage of Pleasant Hill and “unofficial mayor” of that community. He was 83 years of age. A native of Houma, Mr. Davis had resided in Bogalusa for the past 39 years. He formerly was employed as millwright at the plant of the Great Southern Lumber Company. Prior to being stricken with his last illness, Mr. Davis was on the street in the business section of Pleasant Hill daily. He was a great believer in the development of the Pleasant Hill business section and none was more happy than he when the present city administration widened Avenue F. He had headquarters in every place of business “on the hill” where he was affectionately called “Uncle Jim.” Mr. Davis took a great and active interest in all political campaigns and he always voiced his sentiments “straight from the shoulder.” While his death was not unexpected, it came as a shock to members of the family and his legion of friends. The deceased was married to the former Bertha Bethancourt who preceded him in death by some 18 months. Immediate survivors include five daughters and one son. They are Mrs. James H. Acosta of Del Rio, Tex. Mrs. E. J. Brignac, Mobile, Ala.; Mrs. K. B. Anderson, Mrs. Earl Barton, Miss Dorothy Davis and Lawrence J. Davis, all of Bogalusa. Seven grandchildren also survive and they are Mrs. Earl Roberts of Del Rio, Tex. Mrs. Louis Bates, San Antonio, Tex. Wendell Acosta, United States Navy; Claude Acosta, Del Rio; James Acosta, Jr. San Antonio; Kenneth Anderson, New Orleans; Dorothy Ann Brignac, Mobile. Two great-grandchildren also survive. They are Patricia Roberts of Del Rio and Susan Bates of San Antonio. The remains were laid out at the chapel of the G. F. Poole Funeral Home. Funeral services were scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Annunciation with Father Hubert Bordenave officiating. Interment was slated in Ponemah cemetery with the Poole Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were announced as W. P. Rushing, George Peterson, Pat Stephens, Horace Hayden, Aubrey Crowe, Ray Mitchell, Fred Lee and Dorman Crowe. Honorary pallbearers were Ed Cassidy, J. S. Murphy, C. E. Manning and C. T. Houston. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-09-1949 2 Bogalusans’ Father Killed While Grading Road Today Fan Jarrell of Henleyfield was lodged in the Pearl River County this morning (Thursday) after fatally shooting Narual Plunkett “Doc” Smith, road machine operator, with the Mississippi Highway Department, about 8 a.m. No charges had been filed as The Enterprise went to press, with Sheriff Virgil Burge reporting that the district attorney had not arrived. Jarrell told Sheriff Burge that he had told the road machine operators not to grade a road in front of his house. They began grading the road, and he used a single-barrel shotgun to kill Smith, and wound Griffin Varnado, who worked on the road machine, in the leg. Varnado was taken to Picayune to a hospital, and his condition is reported to be not serious. Deputy Sheriff Sam Rust and Picayune Police Chief Weston Lott arrested Jarrell. The road on which the machine was operating has been in dispute for some time, and the case has been in the courts although no decision has been rendered on who owns the property. Mr. Smith is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Walters ad Mrs. Ameal Page, both of Jackson street; four sons, V.J. Smith of Chula Vista, Calif.; Ray, Roy and Bobby, at home. Funeral arrangements were not complete as The Enterprise went to press. McDonald Funeral Home of Picayune will be in charge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-09-1949 Commander Robt. S. Willey Dies in Malta Auto Mishap Mrs. W. S. Harrell of this city was notified Wednesday night that her brother, Commander Robert Soule Willey; 35-year-old native of this city, died of a compound fracture of the skull Wednesday on the Island of Malta, where he was conducting a naval inspection tour. The young naval commander spent much of his early life in Bogalusa, and at one time was employed in the offices of The Enterprise & American as a linotype apprentice. He obtained an appointment to Anapolis, from where he was graduated about 15 years ago. Throughout the war, he saw service in the Pacific Theater of Operations and was active in every major campaign. He received high honors and decorations twice during the war years. Commander Willey recently received his master’s degree in radio electronics from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Mrs. Harrell was notified on Wednesday afternoon that her brother had been seriously injured in an automobile accident and that other details would be forwarded as soon as his condition was determined. Last night the death message came stating that the commander of one of the Navy’s newest destroyers “died in the service of his country.” How the accident occurred was not given in the message. No arrangements for the funeral have been made. Commander Willey is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jane Patch Willey, who lives in California; two sisters, Mrs. W.S. Harrell of Bogalusa, Mrs. P. B. Carter of Morton, Ill., and his mother, Mrs. Vera Soule Byrnes, formerly of this city but now visiting in Morton. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-23-1949 Funeral Held for Mrs. E. Bennett Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock for Mrs. Ethel Dunaway Bennett, 54, who died at her home at 926 Avenue H Friday at 12:45 p.m. after a lingering illness. The services were conducted by the Rev. Lochete Tynes, pastor of Pettitt Memorial Baptist church in the chapel of the Brown Funeral Home. Interment followed in Ponemah cemetery. Mrs. Bennett was a member of one of the parish’s most widely-known families. She was the wife of Allen Bennett and mother of Miss Joyce Bennett, nurse at the Bogalusa Medical Center. The deceased was a sister of Percy and Ira Dunaway, well-known Pleasant Hill businessmen, and Mrs. J. P. Harrell and Mrs. Carley Smith both of this city. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-23-1949 Mrs. F. Bullock Buried Saturday Following funeral services at the First Pentecostal church yesterday at 2 p.m., Mrs. Maudina Johnson Bullock, 39, was buried in Ponemah cemetery. The Rev. Johnnie Magee and the Rev. C. T. Weeks officiated at the funeral, which was in charge of Brown Funeral Home. Mrs. Bullock died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday of shock following a major operation at the Bogalusa Medical Center. She was a resident of Sixth street and Avenue L. Survivors include her husband Frank Bullock; one son, Billy Ray; three daughters, Elsa W., Sylvia Joy and Martha Maudine Bullock, all of Bogalusa; her father, George W. Johnson of Mt. Hermon; her mother, Mrs. Alvie Bercaygae of Covington; one sister, Mrs. Elvie Lawrence; five brothers, Sam and Illie Johnson of Bogalusa, Ollie Johnson of Diebald, Texas, Alfred Johnson of Lufkin, Texas, and Willie Johnson of New Orleans.
