Goodwyn, Jr., editor of the St. Tammany Farmer, died at the entrance of his office in Covington Thursday of a heart attack. The 33-year-old editor has actively managed the newspaper since ill health placed his father, H. K. (Nat) Goodwyn on the inactive list some five years ago. He was a tung grower, active member of the Covington Fire Department and the Grower’s Co-operative Association, and vice-president of the South Louisiana Press Association. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at the home of his parents in Covington, with interment following in Covington cemetery. Goodwyn was one of a number of out-of-town publishers who have visited the offices of the Enterprise Publishing Company on Austin Street since they were occupied in July. Bogalusa Bulletin, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-05-1949 ‘Uncle Jim’ Davis is Dead; Services at 3 P.M. Today Death Saturday at noon ended nine months of suffering by Jas. A. “Uncle Jim” Davis the sage of Pleasant Hill and “unofficial mayor” of that community. He was 83 years of age. A native of Houma, Mr. Davis had resided in Bogalusa for the past 39 years. He formerly was employed as millwright at the plant of the Great Southern Lumber Company. Prior to being stricken with his last illness, Mr. Davis was on the street in the business section of Pleasant Hill daily. He was a great believer in the development of the Pleasant Hill business section and none was more happy than he when the present city administration widened Avenue F. He had headquarters in every place of business “on the hill” where he was affectionately called “Uncle Jim.” Mr. Davis took a great and active interest in all political campaigns and he always voiced his sentiments “straight from the shoulder.” While his death was not unexpected, it came as a shock to members of the family and his legion of friends. The deceased was married to the former Bertha Bethancourt who preceded him in death by some 18 months. Immediate survivors include five daughters and one son. They are Mrs. James H. Acosta of Del Rio, Tex.’ Mrs. E. J. Brignac, Mobile, Ala.; Mrs. K. B. Anderson, Mrs. Earl Barton, Miss Dorothy Davis and Lawrence J. Davis, all of Bogalusa. Seven grandchildren also survive and they are Mrs. Earl Roberts of Del Rio, Tex.’ Mrs. Louis Bates, San Antonio, Tex.’ Wendell Acosta, United States Navy; Claude Acosta, Del Rio; James Acosta, Jr. San Antonio; Kenneth Anderson, New Orleans; Dorothy Ann Brignac, Mobile. Two great-grandchildren also survive. They are Patricia Roberts of Del Rio and Susan Bates of San Antonio. The remains were laid out at the chapel of the G. F. Poole Funeral Home. Funeral services were scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Annunciation with Father Hubert Bordenave officiating. Interment was slated in Ponemah cemetery with the Poole Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were announced as W. P. Rushing, George Peterson, Pat Stephens, Horace Hayden, Aubrey Crowe, Ray Mitchell, Fred Lee and Dorman Crowe. Honorary pallbearers were Ed Cassidy, J. S. Murphy, C. E. Manning and C. T. Houston. Bogalusa Bulletin, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-05-1949 Mrs. Bannister Died on Saturday Mrs. Myra Melissa Bannister, 92, widow of the late Ezekial Bannister, of the Terrace, died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday at the Washington-St. Tammany hospital after remaining a patient there for a few days. Funeral services will be conducted today (Monday) at 2:30 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist church, with the Rev. D. W. Nix, officiating. Assisting at the funeral will be Rev. Horatio Mitchell and the Rev. Stockstill. Mrs. Bannister is survived by two sons, J.L. and G.W. Bannister, both of this city; 2 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. Bogalusa Bulletin, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-05-1949 Dewitt Bennett Died Wednesday Dewitt Bennett of Wilmer, La, suffered a heart attack and died Wednesday, November 30, at the Independence hospital. Mr. Bennett was the father of Lester Bennett and Mrs. J. Howard Wilson of Bogalusa. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Wilmer Baptist church, with the Rev. Royce McBeth of Mobile, Ala, officiating. Besides his sons, Lester and daughter, Mrs. Wilson, of this city, Mr. Bennett is survived by his widow, Mrs. Laura Bennett of Wilmer, another son, Adrian, also of Wilmer; two other daughters, Mrs. Doris Trosclair of New Orleans, and Mrs. Thelma Bloom of Columbia City, Ind. Mr. Bennett had visited in Bogalusa on several occasions and had a number of friends in this city. Bogalusa Bulletin, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-05-1949 Eddie Puckett Died Driving; Truck Leaves Road; Hit Tree George Edward Puckett, 62, died at the wheel of his 1947 Dodge truck late Thursday afternoon traveling toward Bogalusa on Highway 7 about five miles south of here. The truck left the highway at a curve, plunging down an embankment about 15 feet high and coming to a half against a pine tree. His wife, Mrs. Florence Smith Puckett, who was riding in the truck, was uninjured. Coroner R. R. Ward said that Puckett was dead of a heart attack before the truck ever left the highway. Mrs. Puckett said her husband slumped over the steering wheel and that she attempted to catch the wheel of the truck in an unsuccessful effort to avoid the wreck. The front of the truck was damaged. A retired Bogalusa plumber, Mr. Puckett has lived about three miles south of the city in the Lee’s Creek Vicinity on a small farm for the past year. Funeral services were conducted at the Church of God on Avenue H and 17th Street at 2:30 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. W. C. Smith officiating. Interment was in McGehee cemetery with Brown Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Besides his wife, Mr. Puckett is survived by two brothers, Robert Puckett of this city, and Henry Puckett of New Orleans. Bogalusa Bulletin, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-11-1949 Funeral Today For Mrs. Corkern Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the Love Baptist Church for Mrs. Senora Kennedy Corkern, 51, 408 First Avenue, who died at the Washington- St. Tammany hospital at 7:55 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Johnny Sones will officiate at the services, which will be followed by interment in Ponemah cemetery with Brown Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Corkern is survived by her husband, Gordon Corkern; two sons, Virgil E. Corkern and Vernon E. Corkern, both of Bogalusa; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy E. Dillon and Mrs. Alma Miller, both of Bogalusa; five sisters, Mrs. Alma Pate of Fort Worth, Texas; Mrs. L. H. Amacker of Poplarville, Mrs. Jessie Harris of Angie, Mrs. Bill Kindrick of Clinton and Mrs. Mae Endres of New Orleans. Four grandchildren also survive. Bogalusa Bulletin, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-18-1949 Mrs. F. Bullock Buried Yesterday Following funeral services at the First Pentecostal church yesterday at 2 p.m., Mrs. Maudina Johnson Bullock, 39, was buried in Ponemah cemetery. The Rev. Johnnie Magee and the Rev. C. T. Weeks officiated at the funeral, which was in charge of Brown Funeral Home. Mrs. Bullock died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday of shock following a major operation at the Bogalusa Medical Center. She was a resident of Sixth street and Avenue L. Survivors include her husband Frank Bullock; one son, Billy Ray; three daughters, Elsa W., Sylvia Joy and Martha Maudine Bullock, all of Bogalusa; her father, George W. Johnson of Mt. Hermon; her mother, Mrs. Alvie Bercaygae of Covington; one sister, Mrs. Elvie Lawrence; five brothers, Sam and Illie Johnson of Bogalusa, Ollie Johnson of Diebald, Texas, Alfred Johnson of Lufkin, Texas, and Willie Johnson of New Orleans. Bogalusa Bulletin, Bogalusa, Louisiana 12-18-1949 Funeral Held for Mrs. E. Bennett Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock for Mrs. Ethel Dunaway Bennett, 54, who died at her home at 926 Avenue H Friday at 12:45 p.m. after a lingering illness. The services were conducted by the Rev. Lochte Tynes, pastor of Pettitt Memorial Baptist church in the chapel of the Brown Funeral Home. Interment followed in Ponemah cemetery. Mrs. Bennett was a member of one of the parish’s most widely-known families. She was the wife of Allen Bennett and mother of Miss Joyce Bennett, nurse at the Bogalusa Medical Center. The deceased was a sister of Percy and Ira Dunaway, well known Pleasant Hill Businessmen, and Mrs. J. P. Harrell and Mrs. Carley Smith, both of this city.
