June 27, at the home of her dau. Mrs. Pete Capo, in Bog. Mrs. Fontana, who made her home in New Orleans & Donaldsonville, was visiting in Bog. when she became ill. She was a native of Ireland & came to this country 57 yrs. ago. Survivors: husband Paul Fontana of Donaldsonville, 6 sons George of Bog, Luke of Slidell, Dr. Sam Fontana, Jack & Paul Jr. of New Orleans, & Anthony of Donaldsonville, 6 daus. Mrs. Pete Capo of Bog, Mrs. Anthony DiBartolo of Hackberry LA, Mrs. Joe Malone, Mrs. Annie Capo, Mrs. Angeline Ropollo & Mrs. Lena Duker all of New Orleans, & preceded in death by a son Leon Fontana. Funeral Sat. in New Orleans at Sacred Heart Church. Interment in the Hope Mausoleum in New Orleans. Poole Funeral Home in charge. Harrison, Lizzie Jordan (colored) age 66, was fatally injured Fri., when hit by an auto driven by Joe Cassidy, Jr., while attempting to cross Columbia Street with her young grandson. She died enroute to ESM Hosp. The young grandson stated he called for her to come back but she didn't hear & stepped in front of the car. Funeral arrangements incomplete with Cook's Funeral Home in charge. July 8, 1946 Belton, Richard (colored) was fatally injured Fri. night in a fight with Willie B. Merritt (colored) in the door of Preston's Saloon on 4th Street. Merritt, bartender in the negro saloon stated Belton had broke a bottle & a glass when he called to him to return & pay for the glass he broke. Belton, stated he would not pay & the fight resulted. Belton, was taken home by friends unconscious. Officers investigating the fight arrived at his home & had him removed to the hospital. Merritt, was arrested & charged with manslaughter. Brazeale, John J, age 51, died Mon, July 1 at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. He was a resident of New Orleans & brother of Mrs. Ellis Norsworthy of Bog. Funeral held Wed., interment in Ponemah Cem. Poole Funeral Home in charge. Case, Calvin, age 84, pioneer resident of Bog, died Fri., July 5 in a New Orleans hospital, having suffered a heart attack a several days before his death. Mr. Case, who established residence in Bog. in 1911, had been living in New Orleans for the past 2 yrs. Survivors: 2 sons Ben of Bog, & Harvey of Houston, 3 daus. Mrs. J. W. Wahl of Bog, Mrs. J. W. Tourne, Alfred, age 34, died Fri. of a heart attack in Washington where he was stationed with the Army. Survivors: sister Miss Angel Tourne & bro. Jess Tourne. Funeral held in Washington, interment in Arlington Cem. {See July 15} July 15, 1946 Graham, Hosea Campbell, age 65 died Fri. July 12 at his home in Stoney Point. Funeral sevice held Sun. at Stoney Point Church, interment in the family cemetery. Brown Funeral Home in charge. Nicholas, Grady, age 41, died Sat. July 13 in the Veterans Hosp. in Jackson MS, as a result of injuries suffered in an auto accident several wks. ago in Prentiss MS. He served 4 yrs. in both the European & Pacific operations in WW II. Reportedly, Nicholas was thrown from the auto & was paralyzed from the waist. He was taken from the wreck by police officers & lodged in jail without medical attention for several hours. Survivors: parents Mr. G. C. Nicholas of Bog, & Mrs. Rosa Lee Nicholas of Columbia, 5 bros. Bill & Fred of Lufkin TX, G. C. Jr. with the Marine Corp, Frank of Mobile, Carl of Columbia, 6 sisters Mrs. Etta Baughman of Columbia, Mrs. Grover Stogner of Varnado, Mrs. Lillian Gradner of Hattiesburg, Mrs. Grace Knight of Lake Charles, Miss Rosie Lee Nicholas of Columbia & Mrs. Hazel Cathuron of Monroe. Funeral held Mon. at Hope Well Cem. near Columbia with full military honors. Reeves, Charles, age 12 of the San Pedro community, died Thur. in a New Orleans hospital as the result of 2nd & 3rd degree burns suffered when an oil can he was holding exploded. Reportedly, Charles & young Billy Graham were going to light a fire under the washpot & poured oil on the wood. The Reeves' youth was holding the can when Billy lighted the fire & it "trailed" back to the can. The youth died several hours after being rushed to the hospital. Survivors: Mr/Mrs Clyde Reeves, bro. Jerry, & sister Vanda. Funeral held Sat. at San Pedro church. Tourne, Lt. Albert B., Jr. age 35. Funeral services held Mon. July 8, in Fort Myers Chapel in Belvoir VA. Lt. Toune's death came as a result of a heart attack while on duty at Fort Myers. A veteran of 16 yrs. of active service with the Army, he was awarded the Purple Heart when wounded in the battle of the bulge. A native of Bay St. Louis, he reside a short while in this city prior to entering service. Survivors: widow Mrs. Dorothy Tourne, 3 dau. Dorothy Ann, Catherine & Trinity Mae, his father Albert Tourne, Sr., 7 sisters & 6 brothers. Wilson, Miss Avie, age 71, died Fri. July 12 in a MS. hospital. She resided near Covington & was the sister of Mrs. J. C. Branton of Bog. Funeral & interment was held Mon. at Pilgrim's Rest Church. Brown Funeral Home in charge. July 22, 1946 Ludd, Theo (colored) age 26 found dead in his bed at his home on Royal St. Thur. night, due to a heart condition. His wife tried to awaken him, but he died before a doctor could be summoned. Ludd, a veteran of WW II, participated in 3 invasions. Remains prepared by Tucker Funeral Home & shipped to Tylertown for burial. Survivors: wife & 2 children. Passman, Mrs. Bertha Galloway age 40 of Isabel died Sat. July 20 at ESM Hosp. A former teacher at Borna Creek Sch, she was the widow of the late Latimore Passman who was killed during the invasion of Sicily. Survivors: 3 sisters Mrs. Rudolph Adams of Bog, Mrs. Vela Holden of Covington, & Mrs. Mary Fortenberry of Osyka MS, 2 bros. Stanley Galloway of Bog, & O. L. Galloway of Sheridan. Funeral held Sun. at Isabel Church, interment in the church cem. Poole in charge. July 29, 1946 Bailey, Edward Morton age 69 died at his home 3 miles southeast of Franklinton Fri. night. Survivors: widow Mrs. Susie Knight Bailey, 6 children William H. of Shreveport, Milton of Chesbrough LA, Van of Walnut Grove CA, Emile of Franklinton, Willard of Bog, & Mrs. Margie Welch of Baton Rouge, 2 sister Mrs. Etta Pierce of Memphis TN. Funeral held Sun. at Enon Bapt. Church, interment in the Green Cem. Brumfield, Dudley, died Tues. in Mobile in an auto crash. His wife was the former Miss Hazel King, d/o Rev. A. C. King. Funeral service held at Poole Funeral Home on Mon., interment in a cemetery near Franklinton. McDaniel, Mrs. Charles of St. John Street, was instantly killed Mon. morning in a auto accident between Columbia & Hattiesburg MS. Mr/Mrs Charles A. Glynn of Ave. E, are reported to be seriously injured while their 2 children, Jackie age about 12 & Marjorie Ann age about 6, were not so seriously injured. Mack Brown, father of Mesdames McDaniel & Glynn, was not seriously injured & were removed to the Columbia Hosp. The party left Bog, Mon. about 5:00a.m. to visit relatives in AL & TN & the accident was caused by a tire blow out. Mrs. McDaniel is survived by her husband & 2 daus, Mrs. Elbert Matheny & Miss Mammie Lou McDaniel of Bog. Poole Funeral Home in charge of incomplete arrangements. August 5, 1946 Gunther, Infant son of Mr/Mrs. William Gunther of Lee Road, Covington born at a local hospital Fri. & died Sat. McGehee, Wesley W., age 50, died at his home Thur. morning after an extended illness. More than 500 persons attended the funeral service held Fri. afternoon at the McGehee Cem. The funeral possession was more than a mile long as friends from all walks of life paid tribute to one of the parishes best known citizens. Survivors: wife Mrs. Mable Adams McGehee, son Jesse McGehee, 3 bros. J. D., Zeke & Judson McGehee, 2 sisters Mrs. Y. R. Nichols & Mrs. Robert Landry, 1 grandson, Pat McGehee. Page, W. A., Sr. age 70 died at his home in Bastrop Wed. of a heart attack. Born in Bienville Psh, he had been a banker throughout his life. Survivors: widow Mrs. Lula D. Page, 3 daus. Mrs. Ray Foster of Monroe, Mrs. John M. Smith & Mrs. Hoffman Jones of Bastrop, 1 son W. A. "Bunkie" Page of Bog. Funeral & interment held at Batrop on Fri. August 12, 1946 Jenkins, Charles William age 11 months, s/o Mr/Mrs. Shelton Jenkins of Franklinton, died Sat. Aug. 10th at ESM Hosp. Funeral & interment held Sun. at Mt. Pleasant Church. Brown Funeral Home in charge. O'Quinn, Mrs. Daniel W. age 60 of Laurel MS, died Thur. at ESM Hosp. of injuries following a auto accident last Tues. at the corner of LA Ave. & the Varnado Hwy. She is the 2nd person to die of the accident when a car driven by Orin H. Campbell of Bog & the other by Mrs. O'Quinn's husband in which she was a passenger crashed together. Mr. Campbell died 3 hrs. after the accident. Survivors: husband, 3 daus. & 1 son. The O'Quinns were uncle & aunt of Dr. Daniel T. O'Quinn, a resident physician at WST Hosp. for several wks. 2 yrs. ago. Funeral & interment held in Laurel, Sat., with the body prepared for burial by Poole Funeral Home. Thompson Funeral Home of Laurel in charge. Robbins, Mrs. E. D. died at her home Sat. in Bog. She came to Bog. with her late husband Dr. E. D. Robbins in 1918. Dr. Robbins died in 1925. Survivors: Thomas Denegre & Kemit, the latter having been born in Bog & was recently discharged from the Navy, 1 sister Mrs. L. O. Pigott of Columbia MS, 3 bros. A. L. Waring of Hughes AR, M. B. & Thomas G. Waring of Tylertown MS. Funeral held at the ES Methodist Church on Sun, interment in Ponemah Cem. Poole Funeral Home in charge. Taylor, Isaac, age 16, s/o Mr/Mrs Maurice Taylor of the Bush-Folsom road was instantly killed Sun. afternoon when struck by lightning & Leroy & Herbert Sharp sons of Mr/Mrs Leslie Sharp were injured. Leroy also age 16 suffered 1st degree burns of the back & head & was brought the ESM Hosp. Herbert, suffered burns on the right arm but did not require hospital treatment. The boy was reportedly at one of the bus stop shelters staying out of the rain when the lightning struck. Other survivors: Nelson, Atwood, Jessie Lee, Ida Fay, Billy Ray & Eula May. Funeral & interment held Tues. at Sharps Chapel. Brown Funeral Home in charge. August 19, 1946 Alford, Mrs. Hattie Baham age 56 of Mt. Pisgah community died at WST Hosp. Fri. after admission of Wed. Survivors: 4 bros. Kepp, Cleve, Clay of Mt. Pisgah, & Sanford Baham of Jackson MS, 3 sisters Mrs. Zell Knight of Enon, Mrs. Marion Miller of Mt. Hermon & Mrs. Nettie Bateman of Mt. Pisgah. Funeral held Sat. with Poole Funeral Home in charge. Seal, Melvin, age 43 died Sat. Aug. 17th in WST Hosp. At the time of his death he had been suffering with his heart for the past 6 mos. Survivors: 3 half sisters Mesdames Lizzie Tate of Kentwood, Leonie Pope of Columbia, & Sara Burks of Henleyfield. Funeral held Sun. at Varnado Bapt. Church, interment in the Seal Cem. Poole Funeral Home in charge. Sept. 2, 1946 Warner, Eli The decomposed body of the brother of Mrs. Mack A. Pope of Bog, was found near Big Springs TX this week after being there for 3 wks. Tom Warner, of Warnerton, father of the man, received a telegram telling of his sons death. It is believed he was robbed & killed. A letter in his pocket from his niece, Miss Neta Warner of Tylertown MS, identified him. When he visited here in July, he was with the FBI, stationed in Odessa TX, a town about 60-70 miles from where his body was found. September 9, 1946 Evans, Charles age 53, was electrocuted Fri. when he came in contact with 440 volts of electricity while working at Gaylord Container Corp. He was employed by L. O. Stocker Construction of St. Louis. Evans, never regained consciousness & was pronounced dead at ESM Hosp. Survivors: 6 children, 4 step-children & 12 grandchildren who reside in Bog, except 1 son W. P. stationed in Alaska. Another son Woodrow, was discharged last November. Ages of children range from 11-28 yrs., the youngest being Leroy & the eldest Mrs. Walter Reeves of Plainview. Step-children William Burke & Mrs. Spencer Cooper reside in Bog. Funeral held Sun. at the Mizell Cem near Isabel. Poole Funeral Home in charge. McDaniel, Mrs. S. C. age 67 of Bog, died Fri. at WST Hosp, several days following a heart attack. Her husband died 8 days prior to her attack. Survivors: 5 daus. Mrs. Tressie Edwards, Mrs. Georgia Byrd, Mrs. Sidney Hyde & Mrs. Cecil Pickard of Bog & Mrs. Josie Loman of Pascougla, 2 sons Reagan Stogner of Hammond & Rankin Stogner of Varnado, 29 grandchildren & 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral held Sat., with interment in the Angie Cem. Poole Funeral Home in charge. Myres, Henry, age 30, employee of the Little Southern Lumber Co, was fatally injured Thur. in a logging accident. He was reportedly between several large logs & the loader when the accident occurred. He was rushed to ESM Hosp. but pronounced dead upon arrival. Survivors: wife Mrs. Mary Myers, 3 children, parents Mr/Mrs John Myers, bro. Earvil of Blond LA, 6 sisters Mrs. R. J. Parker of Isabel, Mrs. Amon Carter, of Bush, Mrs. James Ezell of Winnsburg, Mrs. D. C. Evans of Pearl River, Mrs. Nina May Hunt of Bog & Mrs. Merl King of Bush. Funeral & interment at Mizell Cem. on Fri. Brown Funeral Home in charge. Sharp, Dallas Carter, age 53 died at his home near Covington, Sun. Survivors: widow & 8 children. Funeral held Mon, interment in the Blackwell Cem. Brown Funeral Home in charge. September 16, 1946 DeWald, Mack, age 32, drowned Fri. & Milton Kennedy escaped serious injury when the motor scooter which they were riding & driven by Dewald, went over the embankment of the highway into a large ditch filled with water about 2 miles south of Varnado near Pushapatape Creek. The wheel of the sidecar in which Kennedy was riding reportedly went off the road overbalancing the scooter causing it to fall down the steep embankment. DeWald was knocked unconscious & sank into 4 feet of water. Unsuccessfully, Kennedy tried to rescue Dewald in the dark & walked into Varnado where he called the police. The body was found by officers. Mr. Kennedy telephoned Mrs. DeWald, who came to the scene & identified her husband. Survivors: wife Mrs. Lottie Vera DeWald, 2 children Mack Jr. & Shirley Ann, his father Alex DeWald all of Bog. Funeral held Sat, interment in Ponemah Cem. Poole Funeral Home in charge. 7 members of the Willie Freeman family of Bog, were injured in a traffic at Thomas on Sun. & 6 are patients at WST Hosp, however making satisfactory progress. Hospitalized are: Mrs. Mary Freeman age 38, her 5 children Estelle age 6 months, Isabel age 5, D. L. age 3, Zeke age 19, & Melvin age 14. Willie Freeman, father suffered injuries but was not hospitalized. According to the State Trooper, the 7 members of the Freeman family were traveling south on the highway through Thomas when their car crashed into a truck, property of Albert Thomas, which was being driven by Villar Thomas. The Thomas truck traveling east through Thomas collided at the intersection with the Freeman vehicle being driven by Zeke Freeman. In the Thomas truck, besides the driver were Layton Erwin, Prentiss Hughes, Mary Francis Hughes, Peggy Ruth Payne all of Franklinton. The Payne girl age 16 was hospitalized at ESM Hosp. though the injuries were not thought to be serious. Other occupants of the truck received minor injuries. Martin, Irene Claire, was killed instantly last Mon. when she stepped from the Covington-Abita school bus in front of her home & proceeded to walk behind the bus when she was struck by a car driven by Mrs. Lionel Petit, mother of 2 children & expects to become the mother of a 3rd child soon. J. D. Fogg, bus driver age 22, stated he took the usual precaution to display the stop flag warning. He opened the door & after she walked around the bus & started to cross the road the car crashed into the child. Mrs. Pettitt stated she was behind the bus, the bus stopped, I blew my horn & passed on the left side. I did not see the child until she was in the middle of the car. The following day Mrs. Pettitt was charged with negligible homicide & the remains of little Irene were laid to rest. September 23, 1946 Breitling, Joe, former resident of Bog, were held Fri. at Dolorosa Church, New Orleans. Survivors: widow, 8 children, 2 sisters, 1 bro. Rufus Breitling of New Jersey. He was an uncle of Richard Engerran & Mrs. Mitchie Smith. Interment in Greenwood Cem, New Orleans. Sept. 30, 1946 Thomas, Mrs. Eunice Sharp age 26, w/o Vernon Thomas of Plainview, died Sat. at ESM hosp, shortly after giving birth to a baby girl. The baby is reportedly doing well. Funeral service at Blackwell Cem. near Folsom. G. F. Poole in charge.
