Gilbert Sherman Bickham III (Died November 29, 2001) HACKLEY - Gilbert Sherman Bickham III, 51, died yesterday at the Riverside Medical Center. Luther Ray Whitney (Died November 22, 2001) BOGALUSA - Luther Ray Whitney, a native and resident of Bogalusa died last Thursday, November 22, 2001. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea and then served Vietnam. Survivors include his mother, Charlene Roach of Bogalusa; two daughters, Tammy Melissa Whitney Crook Miller and husband Mark Craig Miller of St. Louis, MO, and Trisha Michelle Whitney Crook Lorenzo and husband Stephen Joseph Lorenzo of Dallas, Texas; by his first wife Carol June Shoumaker Whitney Crook; two sons, Edward Ray Whitney and Duane Joseph Whitney of Bogalusa; by his second wife Cindie Whitney Mossman. He was married a third time to Glenda. Grandchildren include Mark Craig Miller II, twin granddaughters Martha Cynthia and Melissa Christina Miller and Madisen Michelle Lorenzo. Two sisters, Teresa Bates of Bogalusa and Victoria Rolla of New Hampshire; Two brothers Ricky Roach and wife Katie, both of Bogalusa and Mickey Roach. He will be missed by his extended family and friends too numerous to mention. She was a member of Angie Baptist Church and retired U.S. Postal Service employee. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandre tynes and her husband, Lawrence of Sun; a granddaughter, Lacy Tynes of Sun; three nieces; two nephews; other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death was her husband, Doyle Blackwell; her grandson, Paul Tynes; her parents, Thomas Eugene Adams and Ettress Ball Adams; four brothers, Clyde, Willie, James and Donald Wayne Adams; and a sister, Evelyn McGee. Sherman Gilbert Bickham III (Died November 29, 2001) HACKLEY - Sherman Gilbert Bickham III, 50, a resident of the Hackley community died last Thursday in Riverside Medical Center. He was born March 10, 1951. He was the son of Sherman and the late Audrey Warren Bickham. He leaves to cherish his memories his father, Sherman Bickham II; a sister, Frances Elaine Dillon; a brother, Roshell (Norma Jean) Bickham; two nieces, Centra Dillon and Barbara (Kenneth) Guy; four nephews, Larry Dillon, Grandin, Rachel (Shanice) Darius Bickham. Rogers (Died December 2, 2001) BOGALUSA - James John Rogers (Jimmy), 95 years, 11 months, beloved husband, father, grandfather, peacefully joined his heavenly Father Sunday. He was affectionally known as Jimmy" or "Jim", and was a dedicated and caring man to family and friends. He was born Jan. 26, 1906, in New Orleans, and died at St. John's Hospital in Clear Lake, TX. He is survived by his wife, Dollie McElven of 75 years; daughter, Betty Rogers Glover and husband, George Glover of Seabrook, TX; daughter, Delores Rogers Shows and husband, Don Shows Sr., of Cypress, TX. Rogers had five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. His grandchildren are Pam Glover, Kim Glover Vaughn and husband Tom Vaughn of Galveston, TX, Don Shows Jr. and wife Gerry Shoemake Shows of Plano, TX, Rene' Shows Cates and husband, Steve Cates of Spring, TX and Roger Shows and wife, Christy Brons Shows of Carrollton, TX. Great-grandchildren are Adam, Alec and Tyler Vaughn, Sydney Shows, Matt and Mark Cates and Thomas Shows. Preceding him in death were his parents, James John Rogers Sr. and Margaret O'Brein Rogers. Rogers Sr. held several positions in Bogalusa, primarily that of chief electrician at the Bogalusa paper mill during the early years. Also preceding him in death were his sisters, Elsie George and Florence Dunnaway; brothers, Elmo, Frank and David. A brother, Harold, still resides in Bogalusa. Rogers joined the paper mill force at age 17 working under his dad as an electrician. He retired at age 65 after 48 years of service. He rose to the position of chief electrician, as his dad had done earlier, and held that job until his retirement in 1971. He maintained his membership in the IBEW until his passing. He was a member of the Annunciation Catholic Church since his youth serving as altar boy and remained an active member until his death. Visitation will be at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home tomorrow from 5:30-8:30 p.m. with Rosary at 6 p.m. The funeral service will be Friday at the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Father Lawrence Phelps will officiate. Interment will follow in Ponemah Cemetery. James "Ray" Cooper Bernice S. Cooper Obituary: BOGALUSA - A memorial service for James "Ray" Cooper, and his wife, Bernice S. Cooper, will be held Friday, December 7, at the ESM United Methodist Church, 510 Avenue B, Bogalusa. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. at the church, with the service starting at 2 p.m. The service will follow a private internment at the McGehee Cemetery in Bogalusa. Cooper, then 82, died last year in Kennewick, Washington, where he had resided with his wife since 1990. His wife passed away in Richland, Washington, on November 1 of this year at the age of 89. He was born March 17, 1918, in Bogalusa, the son of Fletcher D. and Anna Burris Cooper. He graduated from Bogalusa High School. He began his career selling building materials, and then construction company management. He later moved into hospital management and administration. He served as business manager, assistant administrator, and administrator for several hospitals in Texas and Southern California. He also served several years as a consultant with a firm designing hospitals for cities throughout the U.S. Bernice "Bea" Cooper was born June 22, 1912, in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from high school in Kansas City, Kansas, and had a career as a dancer, including performing in Broadway shows in New York. Ray and Bernice met while they both worked for a construction company building Keesler Air Force base in Biloxi, Mississippi. They were married June 10, 1948. They are survived by their son James Jr., and his wife Jane, of Benton City, Washington; and by Ray's sisters Ruth Hosey of Bogalusa, and Elaine Walz of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The family requests that any remembrances be made as donations to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Associatio G. G. "Bull" Flynt (Died December 5, 2001) Obituary: COLUMBIA, MS - G.G. "Bull" Flynt, 71, a resident of Columbia, MS died yesterday at Marion General Hospital in Columbia, MS. Born September 10, 1930 to John Griffin and Mamie McLeod Flynt, he was a retired state trooper. He graduated from Mt. Olive High School and attended University of Southern Mississippi and Northwestern University in Illinois. October 1, 1960, he was appointed to the patrol and was transferred to Columbia where he was stationed until retirement. He was promoted to Master Sgt. In June of 1968. In June 1969, he was appointed Asst. Inspector. He was also named Commander of Troop J. He was fondly called Coach "Bull" and has coached Little League Baseball for over 20 years. He also coached PeeWee Basketball, football and High School football at Columbia Academy. Upon retirement from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, he became Athletic Director and Defensive Football Coach as well as Baseball Coach for Columbia Academy until he retired February 2001, when he became ill. Charles Edward Knight (Died December 6, 2001) Obits: HAMMOND - Charles Edward Knight, 68, a resident of Hammond died yesterday in his home. A native of Bogalusa, he resided in Slidell before moving to Hammond. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict returning home to work for Crown-Zellerback Paper Mill in Bogalusa while attending Louisiana Tech University. There he obtained a bachelor's degree in biology, graduating with magna cum laude honors. He worked for the U.S. Corps of Engineers in New Orleans and the U.S. Department of Labor, Minerals Management Service in Metairie. He is survived by his wife, Wylene Remy Knight of Hammond; four sons, Charles Thomas Knight of Mandeville, Robert Knight and Richard Knight of Slidell and Randall Knight of New Orleans; a step-son, Christopher De Marco of Kenner; five step-daughters, Tonilyn Spring of Soldotna, AK, Suzette De Marco, Tracie Spallino, Simone Ingram and Courtney De Marco, all of Hammond; two brothers, Earnie Dale Knight of Cordell, GA and Wilmer Glen Knight of Covington; seven grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Tyler Crowe (Died December 25, 2001) FRANKLINTON - Tyler Crowe, 7, a resident of Franklinton, died yesterday in an automobile accident. Jacqueline Darlene Douglas (Died December 26, 2001) TYLERTOWN, MS - Jacqueline Darlene Douglas, 43, a resident of Tylertown, died Sunday. The daughter of Doyle McDonald and the late Joyce Jones McDonald, she was born on December 18, 1958 in New Orleans. She was the manager of the shipping and receiving department at Multicraft Industries of Tylertown. Survivors include her husband, Dennis Douglas of Jayess; her father, Doyle McDonald; two brothers, Dudley McDonald and Dorman McDonald, all of Tylertown; three sisters, Debbie Matthews of McCall's Creek, MS, Donna Sisson of McComb, and Denise Vines of Woodville, MS; nieces and nephews, Chelsa McDonald, Ventress and Taylor Vines, Jeremy and Ry Sisson; and a great-nephew, Alex Sisson. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a brother, David McDonald; and her mother-in-law, Frances Crank. Visitation was held yesterday at Hartman-Hughes Funeral Home from 5-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held today in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. The Rev. Willie J. Passman will officiate. Burial will follow in the Crain's Creek Cemetery. Catherine Howard Mortillaro (Died December 27, 2001) PINE - Catherine Howard Mortillaro, 79, a longtime resident of Florida and a resident of Pine died this morning in her home. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, a member of Pine Eastern Star Chapter #226 and Homer Magee Post 113 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Franklinton. Survivors include a brother, Robert L. Howard Jr. of Franklinton; a sister, Mary H. Worley of Birmingham, AL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home after 1 p.m. tomorrow until time of the graveside service at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Lyndel Bullard officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Community Cemetery.
