He was born on July 5, 1939 in Miami, FL where he was raised until age 18. He then attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. In 1961. Daniel graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and Biology. On March 4, 1962, he married his college sweetheart Beverly Butler of Franklinton, Louisiana and shortly after begun his tour of duty in the United States Army. While in the military, he served one tour in Korea, two tours in Vietnam, and held various levels of responsibility, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Pool received numerous commendations while serving his country, including three Bronze Stars and several Army Commendations medals. He also obtained his Masters Degree in Military Science from The National War College. Daniel retired after 22 years of service, both active duty and as a Reserve Officer. In addition to his military career, Mr. Pool worked for the Department of Energy and the Department of Labor. Daniel came to Novato in 1974 and his love for music, outdoor activities, and community service followed him. He and his family joined the Novato United Methodist Church where he served as the Finance Committee Chair and church choir soloist. He was on the Board of Pop Warner, often announcing Saturday afternoon football games. Daniel loved to boat, water ski, fish and camp with family members and friends who shared his passion, for the outdoors. He also pursued his love for learning by obtaining a Masters of Arts from the University of Southern California In Systems Management. He is survived by his wife Beverly Butler Pool of Novato, California, son Derek Pool of Richmond, California, daughter Monica Pool of Dallas, Texas and mother Sara Mitchell of Georgia; a mother-in-law Johnnye Mae Butler, Franklinton, Louisiana; 3 brothers-in-law, T.J. Butler, Jr. (Liz), Franklinton, LA; Johnny S. Butler (Rose), Austin, Texas; Samuel Taylor (Sharamayne) Atlanta, Georgia. Daniel is also survived by one grandson, 8 nieces and nephews and a host of other family members and friends. Memorial services will be held Friday May 31, at 6:00 P.M. at the Novato United Methodist Church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Katherine Pigott, Franklinton Katherine Pigott, 62, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Riverside Medical Center. She was a resident of Franklinton. She is survived by two daughters, Priscilla Pigott of Franklinton and Lucittia Pigott of Bogalusa; four sons, Roland Pigott, Divit (Lee) Pigott, Clenard Pigott, and Lucas Pigott of Franklinton; her step-mother, Ruth Magee of Franklinton;three sisters, Hattie (Willie Cotton and Christella Magee of Franklinton and Gladystine (Willard) Lewis of new Orleans; five brothers, Theartie (Dorothy) Magee, Jessie (Dorothy) Magee, Willie (Mildred) Magee and Bert Magee of Franklinton and Curtis (Marthqa) Magee of Long Beach, California; twelve grandchildren; one great- grandchild; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation was held Friday, May 31, 2002 at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Water Valley Church of God in Christ with Bishop Howard E. Quillen, Jr. officiating. Burial followed at Hayes Chapel Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bessie Thomas Quin, Bonner Creek Bessie Thomas Quin, 90, a resident of the Bonner Creek Coimnunity died at 2:30 AM Wednesday at her residence. She was born Jan. 24. 1912 in Washington Parish, the third of six children. Born to Andrew and Ettie Louise Pittman Thomas. He life was spent in Washington Parish as a homemaker and an active member of the Bonner Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 64 years Donald Quin of Franklinton; one daughter and son-in-law: Sue and Leo Macius of Franklinton; one grandson and family, Dr. and Mrs. Dewitt Bateman and Emily, Jonathan. and Benjamin Bateman all of Zachary, LA; one granddaughter and family, Angela and Dr. Thomas Heigle and Sarah and Christopher Heigle all of Baton Rouge; a sister- in-law:, Gertrude Thomas of Franklinton; six nieces, Rosetta Byrd and Raylene Perry both of Franklinton, Betty Crockett of Folsom, Versil Beard of Columbia, MS: and Edith Creel of Clinton, LA.; and numerous great nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by 3 sisters Murlie T. Sandifer.. Ollie T. Jenkins. Melissa Thomas and 2 brothers Ray I. Thomas and Andrew Thomas, Jr. Visitation was held at the Bonner Creek Baptist Church at 10 AM Friday until time for the funeral service at 2 PM at the church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Burial followed in the church cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kerrin E. “Varney” Varnado, Lake Charles Karrin Edgar Varnado, 75, died at his residence on May 30, 2002. He was a native of Franklinton. He was a graduate of Franklinton High School and attended LSU and graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1949 with a B.S. degree. He served in the Navel Air Force during World War II and was discharged in 1946. He has been a resident of Southwest Louisiana since 1949. He taught school and coached at Starks High School for three years after graduation. He then went to work for Sears in Lake Charles, retiring after 30 years. He was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity and a cheerleader while attending college in Hammond. Later in life his social activities included “the Barbershopper’s Chorus”, the Trinity Baptist Church choir, assisting with the tape ministry at Trinity Baptist Church and working out at the spa and daily coffee with his “Coffee Club Members”. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Varnado of Lake Charles; two daughters, Keitha Speer of Centreville, VA and Kelli Rhymes of Leesburg, VA; one brother, Kaye Varnado of Mandeville; and thre grandchildren, Payton, Michelle, and Faith Rhymes. Visitation was held at Crain Funeral Home Saturday from 6 p.m. until Sunday beginning at 1:30 p.m. till time for funeral services at Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Steve James officiating. Graveside services was held at Ellis Cemetery.
