She was a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Social Welfare. She served as a caseworker in several state welfare systems before joining the faculty of the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. At USM she served for fifteen years as a professor and advisor in both the Department of Sociology and the Grate School of Social Welfare. She was active in the League of Women voters, the Mississippi chapter of the National Association of Social Workers as well as several professional and civic organizations. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Hattiesburg. Mrs. Edwards is survived by her husband, Warrick R. Edwards of Tallahassee; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen E. and Deon Carter of Singapore and Christine Edwards of Ann Arbor, Mi.; one sister, Linda S. Crain of Franklinton; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice L. Smith of Athens, AL; two nieces Susan Crain and Tracy Smith; and two nephews, Rob and Matt Crain. Freddie Roberts Wood Mrs. Freddie Roberts Wood, 77, a resident of Franklinton died at 2 pm Tuesday at the residence of her daughter in Metairie. She was a retired lunchroom worker for the Washington Parish Schools. She was a native of Tylertown. Mrs. Wood is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie Sue Roberts Populis and Albert Populis of Metairie; one son, Stanley Roberts of Franklinton; one grandson, Christopher Populis of Metairie; and two sisters, Nola Dunaway of Tylertown and Dixie Miller of Mt. Hermon. She was preceded in death by her husbands Edward Roberts and Don Wood; one grandson, Lawrence Edward Populis; a sister Lula Compton and two brothers Ellis McKenzie and Edward McKenzie. Visitation was held at Crain Funeral Home from 6 pm until 9 pm Wednesday and after 9 am on Thursday. Funeral services were held at 11 am Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Eld. Alcide J. Arceneaux, Jr. Mr. Alcide J. Arceneaux, Jr., 58, died Oct. 22 at 6:35 am. He was a resident of Lockport, LA. He is survived by one daughter, Mamilyn Dupre; five brothers, Ernest, Irvin, Luke, Eugene, and Phillip Arceneaux; three sisters, Emma Hartman, Velma Rogers and Earline Domangue; and three grandchildren, Dwayne, Ryan and Candie Dupree. Carter all of Franklinton; two brothers, Lester Otis of San Francisco, CA and Harvel Otis of McComb, MS; and one nephew, Calvin Carter of Franklinton. Lela Jenkins Stewart Carnegie Mrs. Lela Jenkins Stewart Carnegie, 86, a resident of the Pine community died at 5:07 am Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998 at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. Mrs. Carnegie is survived by four sons, Marvin Stewart, Dillard Carnegie, Willard Carnegie and Claude "Jack" Carnegie all of Pine; three daughters, Mary Sue Carnegie of Marysville, WA, Tereze Alsobrooks and Diane Jarrell both of Pine, one brother, Carl T. "Jack" Stafford, 72, a resident of Mt. Hermon died at 4:10 pm Saturday at his residence. He was a retired auditor with the La. Dept. of Agriculture and also a retired dairyman. He was an electrician apprentice employed by MEI Tech in Metairie and a member of First Baptist Church. He is survived by his parents, F. Douglas Sylvest and Wanda Ferrington Sylvest, both of Franklinton; one sister, Susan Ordoyne of Franklinton, grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. F. D. She was the widow of Louie Creel and a member of Lee Valley Baptist Church in Folsom. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Tina Creel of Franklinton; one daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Harold Barber, also of Franklinton. Also survived by four grandchildren, Stacy Chassion, Matt Barber, Jason Creel and Scott Creel; three sisters, Finis Populus and Jenny Lewis both of Loranger and Eunice Muscarello of Metairie. She was preceded in death by 1 brother and 2 sisters. Wilfred Bulloch Mr. Wilfred Bulloch, a resident of Franklinton died at 5:45 pm Monday at Hood Memorial Hospital in Amite. He was a retired mechanic and owner-operator of Bulloch Texaco for many years and later Bulloch Inspection Station in Franklinton. He was active for many years in the Tennessee Walking Horse Assn. And a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. Mr. Bulloch is survived by his wife, Vimelle Dampeer Bulloch of Franklinton; one son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Jill Bulloch of Franklinton; one daughter and son-in-law, Sally and A. W. Foy of Franklinton; and four grandchildren, Kendra Foy, Kimberly Foy, Katie Bulloch, and Will Bulloch. Visitation was held at Crain Funeral Home from 5 pm until 8 pm Tuesday and after 9 am Wednesday. Funeral services were held at 11 am Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Karl Tingle and Dr. Joe Baugh officiating. Burial followed in the Ellis Cemetery. Pallbearers for the service were Marshall Wood, Jimmy Wood, George Dampeer, George Sutton, Joe Bateman and Johnny Harris. William A. "Red" Hargrove Mr. William A. "Red" Hargrove, 56, a resident of Franklinton died Wednesday at his residence. He was a retired vocational agriculture teacher at Franklinton High School and a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church. Mr. Hargrove is survived by his mother, Virginia Callahan Hargrove of Franklinton; his brother, Charles Lee Hargrove of Pensacola Beach, FL; and a devoted and caring friend, Velma Fortenberry of Franklinton. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles R. Hargrove. Visitation was held at Crain Funeral Home from 5 pm until 9 pm Thursday and after 9 am Friday. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Friday in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Spiller Milton officiating. Burial followed in Fisher Cemetery. An agricultural scholarship fund has been established in his memory at Franklinton High School and contributions can be made at the FHS Agriculture Department at #1 Demon Circle, Franklinton, LA 70438. Lillian Magee Douglas Mrs. Lillian Magee Douglas, 97, a resident of Franklinton died at 2:10 am Sunday at Heritage Manor in Franklinton. She was the widow of Hugh Douglas. Mrs. Douglas is survived by two sons, Kenneth Douglas of Franklinton and Sidney Douglas of Baton Rouge; one daughter, Ruth Comeaux of New Orleans; one sister, Verda Mae Knight of Roxie, MS; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. "Goat" McCain, 78, a resident of Franklinton, died at 8:45 am Monday Dec. 14, at St. Tammany Hospital in Covington. He was a retired dispatches with Washington-St. Tammany Electric Co-op and a member of the First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Dora Knight McCain of Franklinton; two sons, Mickey J. McCain of Tylertown and Jeffery McCain of Belmont, MS; a step-daughter, Deborah Dykes of Franklinton; two step-sons, David Penton of Mt. Hermon and Jerry Penton of Franklinton; two sisters, Inez Thomas of Franklinton and Lonie Thomas of Bogalusa, 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Burie Toney McCain. Visitation was at the Crain Funeral Home from 5 pm until 10 pm Tuesday and after 8 am Wednesday. Robins Newell F. Robins, 78, a longtime resident of the Oak Grove community died at 4 am Tuesday, December 15th at the Riverside Medical Center. He was a retired employee of Crown-Zellerbach and a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by three sons, Everett Robins and Danny Robins both of Franklinton, and Ronald Robins of Lawrenceburg, TN; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louella Thigpen Robins. Interment was in the Springhill-Magee Cemetery. L. C. Thomas L. C. Thomas, 81, a resident of the Sheridan community, died at 7:10 pm Tuesday, Dec. 15th at his residence. He was a retired employee with Gaylord Container and a member of the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Floreda Jenkins Thomas of Sheridan; a son, Benjamin Louis Thomas of Franklinton; a daughter, Betty Louise Hartfield of Bogalusa; a brother, Leon Thomas of Bogalusa; six sisters, Cora McCain, Zellie Mizell, Mamie McDonald and Geneva Knight all of Franklinton, Gladys Merse of Baker and Dora Gardner of Foxworth; four grandchildren, Acy Hartfield, Jr., Angela Thomas Rachal, Chad Thomas, and Patsy Welch; also four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Lela Hunt, Edna Moore, Evie Sanchez, and Zephyr Sheridan. Visitation was in the Crain Funeral Home from 5 pm until 9 pm Wednesday and after 9 am Thursday. Vennie Stafford Jones Vennie Stafford Jones, 100, a resident of Franklinton died at 11:45 pm Tuesday, Dec. 15th, at Heritage Manor in Franklinton. She was a widow of Horace Jones and a member of the Bonner Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jimmie (Floy) Thomas of Franklinton; a son, Virgil F. Jones of Folsom; a sister, Mathilda Reese of Franklinton; five grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren, and 17 great-great grandchildren. Visitation was at the Crain Funeral Home from 5 pm until 9 pm Thursday and after 8 am Friday. Funeral services were held at 11 am Friday, Dec. 18th in the funeral home chapel with Rev. She was a retired clerical supervisor with the Louisiana Department of Public Welfare. She was also recently retired from the Pro-shop at the Franklinton Country Club where she was a former board member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the widow of Murphy James Burch. Mrs. Burch is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William Murphy and Judith Rollins Burch of Baton Rouge and Phillip Maurice and Linda Hortman Burch Sr., of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren, Katherine Whitney Burch, William Matthew Burch, Steven Rollins Stafford, all of Baton Rouge, Phillip Maurice Burch, Jr., of Gonzales, Jennifer Burch Higgins of Woodridge, VA, and Jeffery James Burch of Phoenix; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Burch and Madeline Higgins; a sister-in-law, Peggy Bateman of Franklinton; two nieces and four nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Murphy James Burch, her parents, Dr. Maurice and Sadie Bateman and a brother, William E. Bateman. Visitation was on Sunday, December, 27 from 3 until 9 pm in the Crain Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel on December 28. The Reverend Karl Tingle and the Reverend Dr. Joe Baugh officiated at the service. Interment was in Ellis cemetery in Franklinton. Active pallbearers for service were Phillip M. Rollins, James Thomas, Ron Brumfield and the men of the Franklinton Country Club. Freeman Brumfield Mr. Freeman Brumfield, 45, died December 18, at 2:41 pm. He was a native of the Sunny Hill Community and a resident of Franklinton. He was a self-employed carpenter and a veteran of the National Guard. Mr. Brumfield is survived by three daughters, Angela Briggs, Keisha Brumfield, and Keya Brumfield all of Franklinton; three sisters, Jerri Hunt, Kathy Brumfield of Marino Valley, CA and LaJulia Conerly of Bogalusa; three brothers, Bruce Brumfield, Lorenza Brumfield, and Stephon Brumfield of Mt. Hermon and one grandchild. Visitation was held Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Big Creek A.M.E. church in Kentwood from 6 pm until time for the funeral services. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 7 pm at the church with Rev. Lawrence Jackson officiating. Dismissal will be Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 10 am. Burial followed in Big Creek Cemetery.
