He is survived by three daughters, Lucille Easley of Loranger, Mattie Rowell of Bush, and Beatrice Athey of Franklinton; one step-daughter, Dorthy Cooper of Franklinton; three brothers J.W. Barber, Willis Barber, and Ilos Barber all of Franklinton; one sister, Evie Warren of Franklinton and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Barber. Burial followed in Magee Cemetery at Lawrence Creek. ALICE BEALL MCNEESE, Pine, LA. (Era-Leader January 7, 1998) Mrs. Alice Beall McNeese, 90, a resident of the Pine community died at 1 p.m. Monday at her residence. She was the widow of Archie N. McNeese and a member of the Pine Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. McNeese is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Fernie (Edna) Thomas, Mrs. Douglas (Mildred) Stuart, and Mrs.Walther (Julia) Guchereau all of Pine, Mrs.Willie J. (Gilda) Passman of Franklinton, Mrs. Eddie (Marlene) Fitzmorris of Covington, and Mrs. Billy (Sharon) Simmons of Bogaulusa; three sons, Elmo McNeese, Donald Wayne McNeese and John David McNeese all of Pine; two sisters; Cascelia Ladner, and Letha Jordon both of Pine; thirty grandchildren; fifty- two great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren. DAVID RAY BARBER, Lawrence Creek, LA. Era-Leader 7 January 1998 Mr. David Ray Barber, 58, a resident of the Lawrence Creek Community died at 2:10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Tammany Hospital in Covington. He was retired assistant manager of Washington Co-op in Franklinton and a member of the Lawrence Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Barber is survived by his wife, Nellene Magee Barber of Lawrence Creek, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michel and Wendy Barber, and Mark Alan Barber, all of Lawrence Creek; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Iva and Rosetta Barber. Visitation was held at the Crain Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and after 11 a.m. Thursday. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Eld. Don Jacobs, Eld Doyle Ball and Eld. Willie J. Passman officiating. Accompanist were Marie Vince and Janet Thomas. ALLIE ALFORD BROCK New Orleans, LA. (The Era-Leader 7 Jan 1998) Mrs. Allie Alford Brock, 83, a native of Mt. Hermon and a resident of New Orleans died at 6 a.m. Monday at her residence. She was a retired sales manager for Avon Products, a member of the Suburban Baptist Church in New Orleans and the widow of Shelton Brock. Mrs. Brock is survived by two daughters, Elma B. Mayley of New Orleans, and Zelma Brock of Charlottesville, VA; also seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Burial followed in the Bogue Chitto Baptist Church Cemetery in Mt. Hermon, TED Y. MCLANAHAN, Midland, GA. (The Era-Leader 7 January 1998) Ted Y. McLanahan, 6766 Beaver Court, Midland, Georgia, died Monday, December 22, 1997 at his residence. Mr. McLanahan was born Febuary 22, 1948 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the son of Doris Standridge McLanahan of Franklinton, Lousisian, and the late Francis H. McLanahan. He was a transmission superintendent with Southern Natural Gas with twenty-eight years service, and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Haselden McLanahan of Midland; three sons, Matthew McLanahan of Midland, Tim McLanahan of New Orleans, Louisiana and Chris McLanahan of Connecticut and his mother. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul Methodist Church on December 23, 1997, with the Reverend Bill Dupree Officiating. He was buried in Lakeview Memory Gardens. ALBERT A. MAGEE, Long Beach, CA. (The Era-Leader 7 January 1998) On January 13, 1931 in Franklinton, Louisiana Albert A. Magee became the tenth of twelve children born to Albery and Sophie Magee. Albert grew up in Franklinton, and graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Following his service in the United States Army he returned to Louisiana and became a school teacher until the mid-1950’s when he and his wife, Wilma moved to Long Beach, California. Upon relocation, Albert joined Christ Second Baptist Church where he remained a faithful member until his health failed. Albert taught school in Compton and sold real estate on the side until 1971 when he became a full time Realtor. For over thirty years, he owned a operated Magee’s Realty in Long Beach. He held a Real Estate Broker’s License, Certified international Real Estate Appraiser’s License and a Funeral Director’s License. Being a leader in civic affairs, Albert was affiliated with numerous organizations including the Century Club, Central Optimist Club, Long Beach Branch; Long Beach Chamber of Commerce; Board of Directors of Long Beach Legal Aid Foundation; Board of Directors of Senior Care Action Network (SCAN); Board of Directors of New Hope Home and a life member of the NAACP. Among the honors bestowed upon Albert is a Certificate of Appreciation form Centennial High School in Compton, Community Service Award from the Recreation Department of the City of Long Beach; Certificate of Appreciation from Harbor area Links for his generous support; the Pearl Tillman-Long Beach Area Community Award; the President’s Award for 1993 from the Long Beach Chapter NAACP, and the Angel Award in 1997 from the National Council of Negro Women. He is listed in Notable Americans and Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans. Although Albert rendered service to a number of groups in the community, none was more fulfilling than his roll as “Santa”, to community youths as well as to seniors. For more than eighteen years, he brightened the holiday season by playing Santa Claus for a group of senior citizens in Long Beach. His philosophy was “This is the season in which everyone should give something of themselves, even if it is only a kind word.” Albert departed this life on Sunday, December 21, 1997. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of forty-one years, Wilma, two sons, Clayton and Eric; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Sam of New Orleans, Louisiana; and Mrs. Milder (CL) William’s of Franklinton, Louisiana; four brothers, Ralph (Creole) Magi of Bogalusa, Louisiana, Olli J. (Ruth) Magi of Franklinton, Louisiana, Jessie Magi of Long Beach, California and Ray (Nelly) Magi of Long Beach, California; sisters-in-law, Shirley Magi and Virginia William’s of Long Beach, California; devoted friend, Mrs. Myrrh Morris of Long Beach, California and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. NINA LAMBENT JERKINS Amite LA. (The Era-Leader 7 January 1998) Mrs. Nina Lambert Jenkins, 83, a resident of Franklinton died at 3:57 a.m. Sunday at Hood memorial Hospital in Amite. She is a member of the New Jerusalem Pentecostal Church. Mrs. Jenkins is survived by her husband, Leroy Jenkins of Franklinton, one son, Nathan Jenkins of Franklinton; two daughters, Margie Lea of Franklinton and Jo Ann Williams of Angie; two brothers, Jim Lambert of Franlinton and Alfred Lambert of Bogalusa; two sisters Vertilee McClendon of Denham Springs and Alma Bryan of Bogalusa; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. (The Era-Leader 7 January 1998) Sol David Hart died Thursday, Jan. 1 at the Riverside Medical Center in Franlinton. BATEMAN (The Era-Leader 14 January 1998) Lillian Richardson Bateman, 95, a resident of the Enon community. died January 8, at the Riverside Medical Center. She was a member of the Enon Baptist Church and the widow of Frank O. Bateman. She is survived by two sons, Frank L. Bateman and Hugh V. Bateman, both of Enon; two daughters, Janel Brumfield of Baton Rouge and Martha Mizell of Franklinton, a brother, Tilmond Richardson of Enon; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great- grandchildren. BEATRICE J. “MISS BEA” RICHARDSON (The Era- Leader 14 January 1998) Mrs. Beatrice J. “Miss Bea” Richardson, 96, a resident of Franklinton died at 8:30 a.m. Monday at her residence. She was a member of the Franklinton First Baptist Church and the widow of E. S. Richardson. Mrs. Richardson is survived by her two daughters, Helen Richardson and Pat Denman, both of Franklinton; and three grandchildren, Cynthis Denman of Covington, Patty Richardson of Hattiesburg, and Denny Denman of Franklinton. FANNIE FORTENBERRY VARNADO (The Era-Leader 14 January 1998) Mrs Fannie Fortenberry Varnado, 91, a resident of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Franklinton died Saturday, January 3, at Riverside Medical Center. Mrs. Fannie operated a booth at the Washington Parish Free Fair for 42 years where she was famous for her chicken pie and was commonly called “The Chichken Pie Lady.” She attended Washington Parish Training School and was a faithful member of Sweet Rest Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Varnado is survived by one daughter, Irene Dillon of Franklinton; one son, Mason Varnado of Oakland, CA; seventeen grandchildren; thirty two great grandchildren and thirty- eight great great-grandchildren; tow daughters-in-law, Thaddie Mae Varnado of Bogalusa and Beatrice Varnado of Independence; and a host of nieces, nephews, loving relatives and friends. Rupe, 75, a resident of Franklinton died at 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at St. Helena Nursing Home in Greensburg. He was a retired master painter and attended Canaan Baptist Church. He is survived by three sons, Richard Rupe of Ville Platte, La., John Rupe of Mt. Hermon and Mark Rupe of Metairie; two daughters: Elizabeth Albers and Susan Ingram both of Franklinton; two step children Michael Letsinger of Knoxville, TN. and Donna Tanner of Dallas, TX; one brother Bill Rupe of New Orleans; and one sister, Alice Boling of Knoxville; also seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was a longtime resident of Gretna. She was a retired food service technician with the Jefferson Parish Schools. Mrs. Welsh is survived by three sons, Robert Louis Welch and Steven Roger Welch both of Gretna and Tommy Pierre Welch of Marshall, AR; one daughter Nancy Claire Fucci of Bogalusa; a sister and brother-in-law, Lonne’ and Bernard Fifre of France. and nine grand- children. CHESTER PRESCOTT DYSON (the Era-Leader 14 January 1998) Mr. Chester Prescott Dyson, 61, a resident of Franklinton died Monday, Jan. 5., as a result of a car accident. Brother Chester graduated from Washington Parish Training School and Southern University where he received a B.A. Degree in Industrial Arts. He was a menber of theU.S. Army. He joined Sweet Home Church of Holiness at an early age and became involved in many activities at the church and also in the community. He did church services for Good Samaritan Nursing Home weekly. He pastored four churches during his ministry, Christ Temple Church of Christ Holiness (New Orleans), Belmount Church of Christ Holiness (Belmount), Starlight Church of Christ Holiness (Mansfield), and Christ Temple Church of Christ Holiness (Roberlean). Bro, Dyson is survived by his mother, Irene Dyson of Franklinton, one sister-in-law, Hazel Dyson of Bolivar, La.; two nephews, Kevin Dyson of Bolivar and Lawrence Bernard Dyson, Jr. of St. Paul, Minnesota, one neice, Margaret Dyson of Mannheim, Germany; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. CHERYL LAVON BICKHAM CAREY (The Era-Leader, 14 January 1998) Mrs. Cherly Lavon Bickham Carey, 46, a resident of Franklinton died Monday, Jan. 5, as a result of a car accident. She graduated from Franklinton High School and then Southern University where she received a degree in accounting. She was employed at Dillard’s in Hammond as an accountant, she joined Sweet Home Church of Christ Holiness at an early age and became the church secretary, along with numerous other activities of the church. She was also a member of the NAACP. She is survived by her mother, Tempie Bickham of Franklinton; one daughter, Erica Bickham Crosby of Franklinton; three grandchildren, Christrpher L. Morgan, Nicholas D. Bickham, and Lester J. Crosby all of Franklinton; two sisters, Annette Carolyn “Sue” (Harding) Garrett of San Francisco, CA. and Beryl Bickham of Oakland, CA; one brother, Robert Leon (Anna) Bickham of Franklinton,; a dear friend, Margie Brumfield of Franklinton; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Crain and Sons Funeral HOme was in charge of arrangements. Burial followed in Sweet Home Cemetery. MARVIN D. WIGGINTON (The Era-Leader 14 January 1998) Marvin D. Wigginton, 82 of Trinity Oaks, died Monday, Dec. 29, at Rowan Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 20, 1915, in Louisville, Ky., Mr. Wigginton was a son of the late May Overstreet and Wigginton Samuel D. Wigginton. He graduated from the University of Louisville in 1938 with a bachelor’s degree in music and from Louisiana State University in 1942 with a master’s degree. He received his doctoral degree from Teacher College of Columbia University. During World 11, he served in the Army Air Force as a historian and in air intelligence, assigned to the Panama Canal Zone. He was a Catawba College professor for 32 years, serving as chairman of the music department from 1949-70. He developed Catawba’s marching band and was its director for 15 years. He also composed Catawba’s fight sone, “Fight, Catawba, Fight.” A Professor Emeritus, he retired from Catawba in 1980. He planned the annual Catawba Community Artist Series for many years and organized and directed the Salisbury Singing Seniors, also for many years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, past president of Salisbury Civitan Club and a former lieutentant governor of N.C. District West. He was a past commander of Samuel C. Hart American Legion Post and received the American Legion Merit Award. He also worked on special projects for the Rowan Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include wife Eilyne Pierce Wigginton whom he married in 1940; daughters Mrs. Bill (Mary Leonard, Salisbury and Mrs. Richard (Judy) Bowen, Wilmington, Del.; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services began at 4 p.m. Wednesday, at Summersett Funeral Home’s Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rec. Donal W. Haynes, minister, First United Methodist Church. Entombment, Rowan Memorial Park. MAVIS ANDICE WILLOUGHBY DELVECHIO (The Era-Leader 21 January 1998) Mrs. Mavis Andice Willoughby Deovechio, 85, a native of Franklinton, died Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Touro Infirmary. She is survived by her husband, James Delvechio; two children, Wilfred Delvechio of Waukegan, IL and Merle Van Aradale of Richardson, TX; one grandchild, James Van Aradale; one brother, John Willoughby of Abita Springs. MYRTLE COLLINS (The Era-Leader. 21 January 1998) Mrs. Myrtle Collins, 89, a resident of Franklinton died at Riverside Medical Center, Sunday, January 11. She was born January 18, 1908 in Walthal County, the daughter of the late John and Ada Thomas Duncan. She was a merchant and a dairy farmer and a member of the New Stateline Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Collins is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Helen W. and Q.D. Turnage of Franklinton and Barbara and Bill Hornsday of Industry, Texas; one sister, Ruby Fortenberry of Tytlertown; five grandchildren, PatriciaLea, Valeria Jerrell, Walter Hornsday, Will Hornaday, and Sarah Hornaday; and four great- grandchildren. He was member of the Centenary Methodist Church and before becoming disabled was a bank teller. He is survived by his parents, Wayne and Judie Fazekas of Franklinton; a sister, Holly Fazekas of Franklinton; a brother Jason Fazekas of Franklinton; his grandmother, Irene Frazekas of Mt. Hermon; and two aunts, Joyce Houk of Atlanta and Diane Smith of Mt. Hermon. Visitation was held at Crain Funeral Home January 13 from 6 p.m. until 9.p.m. and continued Wednesday at Centenary Methodist Church from 9 a.m. until time for funeral services. Funeral services were held January 14 at 11 a.m. at the church with Dr. Spiller Milton officiating. Burial followed in Fisher Cemetery. RALPH COTTON (The Era-Leader, 28 January 1998) Mr. Ralph Cotton, 67, a resident of Pine died January 14, in his home. He was a retired well driller and a member of Faith Tabernacle Church. Mr. Cotton is survived by his wife, Flora Mae Brumfield Cotton, of Pine; five daughters, Lenora Knight of Franklinton, Shirley Strahan of Metairie, Flora Sue Dillon of Angie and Brenda Spears and Jackie Cotton, both of Pine; two brothers, Loyd Cotton of Franklinton and Louie Cotton of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Montoria Breaux of Oak Grove and Faye Treat of Houston, TX; five grandchildren ; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Visitation was held Wednesday at Faith Tabernacle Church after 5 p.m. until time for funeral services. Funeral services were held Jan. 15, at 12 noon with Rev. Jerry Cox, Rev. Leon Hickman, and Rev. He is survived by his wife, Attie Cutrer of Kentwood; six daughters. Martha McFarland and Contenette Bolds of New Orleans, Terry Briggs, Shakira Clay, Delomentria Clay and Shirlon Clay of Kentwood; five sons, Walter Morris of Amite, Paul Cutrer, Kendrick Clay, and Dencen Clay all of Kentwood, and Edward Thompson of Milwaukee, Wisonsin; four sisters, Creola (Lenzie) Dysonof Mt. HARVEY “POPEYE” WILSON (The Era-Leader 28 January 1998) Mr. Harvey “Popeye” Wison, 55, a resident of New Orleans and a native of Franklinton, died Sunday, January 18, at his residence. He is survived by one brother, Julius Wilson of New Orleans, three nephews, Vance Wilson of Franklinton, Bryant Wilson of Springfield, ILL. and Richard Wilson of New Orleans; three neices, Barbara Wilson of Oklahoma City, Connie Wilson and Yvonne Wilson of New Orleans; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Johnny Causey officiating. Burial followed in St. James Cenetery. EDWARD BRUMFIELD (The Era-Leader 28 January 1998) Mr. Edward Brumfield, 43, a resident of Mt. Hermon died Monday, January 19, at his residence. He is survived by seven sisters, Jo Ann Trotter, Margaret Magee, Sylvia Brumfield, Jackie Martin and Donna Brumfield all of Mt. Hermon; three brothers, Charles Brumfield and Ronald Brumfield of Houston, TX and Kenneth Brumfield of Mt. Hermon; three aunts, Effie Turner of Chicago, ILL, Veola Jackson and Jessie Mae Brumfield both of Kentwood; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation was held Thursday, Jan. 22, at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. at Union Chapel A.M.E. Church with Rev. Frank Washington, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Union Chapel Cemetery. WANZIE RUTH WOODS (The Era-Leader 28 January 1998) Mrs. Wanzie Ruth Woods, 76, born November 10, 1921 in Franklinton. She went home to be with her Lord on January 20, 1998. She has been a resident of Dallas Texas for many years. Mrs. Woods was an active member in her church and taught school over 20 years. Mrs. Woods is survived by her children, Ruth Ann Hale and husband, Kenneth, Sarah Jo Curtice and Sandra Jean Barnes and husband, Donald; seven brothers and sisters, Maxine Baham, Margie Creel, Laverne Stringfield, Earl Varnado, James Varnado, Lorelle Hill and Juette Cooper; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband J.H. Woods and a brother, Billy Varnado. The celebration of Wanzie’s life was held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 23, in the Prairie Creek Bible Baptist Church in Mesquite, Texas. Burial followed in Grove Hill Memorial Park in Mesquite. Grove Hill Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
