Willie Patterson Sr. Died June 24, 2001 07/02/01 WACO, TX - Willie Patterson, Sr. a native of Bogalusa and resident of Waco, TX, recently died following a brief illness. Patterson was a U. S. veteran stationed in Fairfield, CA, where he served as a military base policeman. He was a retired employee of Crown Zellerbach Corporation following 30 years of service. At an early age he united with Salter's Chapel AME Church and later he joined St. John Elizabeth Temple Church of God in Christ.He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Willie (Poppy) Patterson Jr. of Waco, TX, Adam (Jenet) Patterson Sr. of Bogalusa and Donald (Patsy) Patterson of Topeka, KS; four daughters and sons-in-law, Laura (Melvin) Garrett of Franklinton, Gloria Auld of San Jose, CA, Janice (Jonathan) Cash of Waco, TX and Phyllis Patterson of San Jose, CA; seventeen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Mr. C. McDaniel, 64, a resident of Baton Rouge and former resident of Bogalusa died of a heart attack at his home Sunday. From an early age, he was well known for his musical talents and throughout his life pursued his love of music. As a youth, he attended Sherwood School of Music in Chicago. He served as the organist at Florida Boulevard Baptist Church in Baton Rouge for the past 12 years. He had served as minister of music in Demopolis, AL and Pleasant Hill, LA and as church organist in many churches in and around Baton Rouge. He also served as a professor of music at Middle Tennessee State University at Murfreesboro, TN. He was an educator in East Baton Rouge Parish Schools for 35 years and was the owner of Mailboxes Etc. on Jones Creek Road and Siegen Lane in Baton Rouge. She was a native of Covington and former resident of Bogalusa and New Orleans. A retired librarian for the St. Tammany Parish Public Library, she served the Pearl River Branch for 32 1/2 years. Chance Died July 3, 2001 07/16/01 PINE - James D. "J.D." Chance, 63, a resident of Pine died July 3 at Meadowcrest Hospital in Gretna. He retired from the U. S. Army after 22 years of service and was a Vietnam veteran. He was also retired from WCI after 20 years of service. He was born April 23, 1938.He is survived by his wife, Brenda Chance; four children, Christopher, Carolyn, Dinah and Danny; a sister, Charlcie Hogan; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held at a later date. Ethel Storey Brown Died July 13, 2001 07/16/01 BOGALUSA - Mrs. Ethel Storey Brown, 86, a resident of Bogalusa, died Friday at Bogalusa Community Medical Center. Horn, 86, a resident of Old Columbia Road in Angie died Wednesday at his home. W.L. Horn, the youngest of three children, was born July 12, 1913 to the late Nettie Smith Horn and Leige Horn in Mathisville, MS. God called his servant home to rest at the age of 87 years, 11 months, 29 days.He was inducted into the army June 26, 1945. After being injured he was honorably discharged January 31, 1946 as a private. He was a raffle expert and received the World War II Victory Medal.In April 1954 he married Carrie B. Roberts Spikes.In 1959 the couple moved from Richmond, CA, to Angie. In the early 60's he joined Live Oak United Methodist Church under the leadership of the Rev. A. E. Franklin. He was an active member of the church serving as chairman of the trustees for many years until his health failed. He continued to serve in a supervisory capacity. Under his guidance as trustee chairman, working with the pastor, he was able to accomplished many things include a new fellowship hall and renovations and extensions of the church sanctuary. He served as a member of finance committee, administrative counsel, and United Methodist Men. He was a loyal member until his death and believed that rules should be followed in the works of the church. He loved hunting, fishing and baseball and supported the Live Oak Church softball team and served as manager of the Live Oak baseball team. He believed in teaching the game with self-discipline.He leaves to cherish his memories, a devoted and loving wife, Carrie B. George Edward Woodward Died July 14, 2001 07/20/01 TYLER, TX - George Edward Woodward, 79, a resident of Tyler, TX died Saturday. He was born March 13, 1922 in Varnado to George A. Woodward and Minnie Edwards Stallings of Bogalusa. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Lieutenant on the U.S.S. North Carolina, and went on to graduate with a Master of Science degree from Louisiana State University. He was then employed for 32 years as a Research Chemist with Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, TX. While in Freeport, he served on the Board of Regents for Brazosport College and was active in Boy Scouts of America, Brazosport Yatch Club, Brazosport Airplane Modelers Club and the United Methodist Church. Following retirement from Dow Chemical, Woodward and his wife, Sammye, moved to Tyler in 1982, where they became members of Marvin United Methodist Church. Timothy Harris Died July 24, 2001 07/30/01 BOGALUSA - Chief Warrant Officer Timothy Adams Harris, an electronics specialist who took command of a Coast Guard station on St. Paul Island, Alaska, this month, died Tuesday of gunshot wounds. Harris was 33.Harris was born in Baton Rouge and grew up in Bogalusa. Though he worked in Alaska, he considered Bogalusa his permanent home and had a house here. He was a graduate of Bogalusa High School. Harris enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1986. He completed his recruit training at Cape May, NJ, was assigned as a seaman apprentice aboard the cutter Firebush, and graduated from the Coast Guard's electronics school in New York as an electronics technician in 1988.Harris served in Port Arkansas, TX, and also aboard the cutters Salvia and Sweetgum. He was assigned to the Grand Isle station from 1993 until 1996. He spent two years at the Navigation Center in Alexandria, Virginia. From June 1998 until June of this year, he was assigned to the Electronics Support Detachment in New Orleans.On June 1, Harris was commissioned as a chief warrant officer and named the new commanding officer of the LORAN, long range navigation station on St. Paul Island in the Bering Sea off the Alaska coast. He assumed command July 3.During his Coast Guard career, Harris received numerous medals and citations, including awards for achievement, humanitarian service, national defense and sea service, and unit commendations and ribbons.He is survived by his wife, Jeanette George Harris; a son, Joshua Adams Harris; a daughter, Jesse Leatrice Harris; his mother, Sara Bartels Rayburn; his father, Jimmy Earl Harris; his step-father, James D.
