WACO, TX - Willie Patterson, Sr. a native of Bogalusa and resident of Waco,
TX, recently died following a brief illness. Patterson was a U. S. veteran
stationed in Fairfield, CA, where he served as a military base policeman.
He was a retired employee of Crown Zellerbach Corporation following 30
years of service. At an early age he united with Salter's Chapel AME Church
and later he joined St. John Elizabeth Temple Church of God in Christ.He is
survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Willie (Poppy) Patterson Jr.
of Waco, TX, Adam (Jenet) Patterson Sr. of Bogalusa and Donald (Patsy)
Patterson of Topeka, KS; four daughters and sons-in-law, Laura (Melvin)
Garrett of Franklinton, Gloria Auld of San Jose, CA, Janice (Jonathan) Cash
of Waco, TX and Phyllis Patterson of San Jose, CA; seventeen grandchildren;
sixteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Mr. C. J. Patterson of Antioch,
CA; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Young and Mrs. Emma Campbell both of
Oakland, CA; a mother-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Stubbefield of Franklinton; a
special nephew, Benjamin Jackson of Waco, TX; several nieces, nephews and
other relatives.Preceding him in death was his wife Lucille McGriggs
Patterson; and his parents Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Patterson.A memorial
service was held in Waco, TX, prior to the funeral service.Visitation will
be at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Bogalusa July 7 from 9-11 a.m. The
funeral service will be in the funeral home chapel following the visitation
at 11 a.m. The Reverend Dr. Atwood Luter will officiate.Interment will
follow at the Bogalusa Cemetery. Brook View Funeral Home of Waco and Crain

Freddy Michael Boyd

survived by a daughter, Samantha Lee Boyd of Dry Prong, LA; three sons and
a daughter-in-law, Freddie Mitchael & Chastity Boyd of Columbia, MS, Victor
Price Boyd and John Tod Robbins both of Dry Prong, LA; a step-daughter,
Melissa Smith of Franklinton; a step-son, Howard Miles Bankston of MI; his
mother, Bobbie Boyd of Angie; a sister and brother-in-law, Perry Nell &
Ralph Stogner of Sandy Hook, MS; a brother and sister-in-law, Hoyt L.
"Chick" Boyd Jr. & Audrey Boyd of Angie; a granddaughter, Skylar Boyd of
Columbia, MS; and numerous nieces and nephews.Preceding him in death was
his father, Hoyt L. Boyd Sr; and a sister, Charlene Jones.Visitation will

Marvin A. McDaniel

BATON ROUGE - Dr. Marvin A. McDaniel, 64, a resident of Baton Rouge and
former resident of Bogalusa died of a heart attack at his home Sunday. From
an early age, he was well known for his musical talents and throughout his
life pursued his love of music. As a youth, he attended Sherwood School of
Music in Chicago. He served as the organist at Florida Boulevard Baptist
Church in Baton Rouge for the past 12 years. He had served as minister of
music in Demopolis, AL and Pleasant Hill, LA and as church organist in many
churches in and around Baton Rouge. He also served as a professor of music
at Middle Tennessee State University at Murfreesboro, TN. He was an
educator in East Baton Rouge Parish Schools for 35 years and was the owner
of Mailboxes Etc. on Jones Creek Road and Siegen Lane in Baton Rouge. He
was a graduate of Louisiana College, Northwestern State University and
Louisiana State University.He is survived by his wife, Barbara Box
McDaniel; two sons, Loren McDaniel of Baton Rouge and Mark McDaniel and
wife, Ruth of Austin, TX; a daughter, Marjean McDaniel of Baton Rouge; two
grandchildren, Ethan and Erin of Austin, TX; a sister, Annie McDaniel of
Bogalusa; and two brothers, George McDaniel of Decatur, AL and Odom
McDainel of Edmond, OK.Preceding him in death were his parents, Pauline
Dees McDaniel and Odom McDaniel Sr.Visitation will be tomorrow at Seale
Funeral Home on Range Road in Denham Springs from 5-9 p.m.The funeral
service will be at Florida Blvd. Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Thursday at

home. He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church. He was retired from
New Orleans Police Department and was currently employed as an ATC Agent
with State of Louisiana.He is survived by his wife, Judy F. Jenkins of
Bogalusa; a daughter, Kelly Jenkins and fianc‚, Christopher Fontan of
Bogalusa; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Karen Jenkins of
Lafayette and Steven Jenkins of Bogalusa; his mother, Louise P. Jenkins of
Covington; a sister, Christine LaFleur of Lafayette; a brother, Dale
Jenkins of Bogalusa; and two grandchildren, Jordan Blaise Rogers and
Madison Jenkins.Visitation will be today at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from

died yesterday in his home. He was a retired pipe fitter from
Crown-Zellerbach with 34 years of service, and a member of American Legion
Post #24. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Main Street
Baptist Church and attended Talisheek Baptist Church.He is survived by his
wife, Doris Mitchell Parker of Talisheek; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda
Kay and J.T. "Tommy" Williamson of Lucedale, MS; two sisters, Ocie Lee
Steele of Sugarland, TX, and Vergie Erwin; a brother, Howard Parker, both

Community died yesterday at Lakeview Regional Medical Center in Covington.
He was a retired Dairyman and retired employee of Seal Lumber Company of
Bogalusa. He was a member of Acy's Creek Missionary Baptist Church.He is
survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Bobby Brooks, Peggy
and Morris Fisher, Cathi Penton, Faye and Pete Adams Jr., all of
Franklinton and Nadean and James King of Homer, NY; two brothers, Edsel
"Pete" Penton of Angie and William "Bill" Penton of Bogalusa; a sister,
Luzina "Dude" Branch of Pine; 17 grandchildren; and 13
great-grandchildren.Preceding him in death was his wife, Wessie Taylor
Penton; a son, John Wesley Penton; a daughter, James Mildred Penton; two

Franklinton; three grandchildren, Darlene Parks of Marrietta, GA, Darwin
Hill of Greenwood, SC and Donna Hunter of Baton Rouge; four
great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Daniel Hill of Bogalusa and Joe Hill
of Tylertown.Preceding him in death were his parents, Alsie and Louella

PINE - Todd Ledet, 40, a resident of Pine died Wednesday at Riverside
Medical Center in Franklinton. He was a loving husband, father and son and
was a member of Brairwood Baptist Church. He was an EMT and EMT Instructor,
a Firearms Instructor, a CPR and First Aid Instructor, and a CDL and
Defensive Tactics Trainer. Mr. Ledet was a former Real Estate agent and was
an avid motor cyclist with his dad.He is survived by his wife, Sheri
Kennedy Ledet of Pine; a daughter, Nicole Ledet of Bogalusa; a step-son and
his wife, Heath and Emily Wascom of Stateline; his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Ledet of Pine; his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clint
Kennedy of Stateline; two sisters, Brenda Ledet of Alexandria and Nancy
Parks of New Foundland, Canada; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Vincent
and Dodie Ledet of Angie and Roger Payne of Kischner, Canada; two
grandchildren, Kristi and Tyler; a special brother-in-law, Terry Kennedy of

Margaret Amelia Holden Auer

PEARL RIVER - Margaret Amelia Holden Auer, 94, a resident of Pearl River
for the past 56 years died Friday at Slidell Memorial Hospital. She was a
native of Covington and former resident of Bogalusa and New Orleans. A
retired librarian for the St. Tammany Parish Public Library, she served the
Pearl River Branch for 32 1/2 years. She was also a past member of Women's
Service League during World War II in New Orleans, the planning commission
for the Pearl River, the Pearl River HandiCraft Club, past president of the
Pearl River Women's Civic Club, co-owner of the Hwy. 11 Texaco Gas Station
in Pearl River, a parishioner and member of the Saints Peter & Paul
Catholic Church and Altar Society of Pearl River.She is survived by two
sons, Francis Anthony Auer Jr. of Baton Rouge and Larry Joseph Auer of
Ethel, LA; a daughter, Theresa Auer Zechenelly of Pearl River; two sisters,
Ruth Holden Clarke of Bogalusa and Dolly Holden Norman of Friendswood, TX;
10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.Visitation will be today at Honaker Funeral Home in
Slidell from 4-8 p.m. and tomorrow from 9-10:30 a.m. The funeral service
will be at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pearl River tomorrow at
11 a.m. The Rev. Bac Hai will officiate. Relatives and friends of the
family are invited to attend the funeral service. Interment will follow in
Crawford Cemetery in Pearl River.

James D. 'J.D.' Chance

PINE - James D. "J.D." Chance, 63, a resident of Pine died July 3 at
Meadowcrest Hospital in Gretna. He retired from the U. S. Army after 22
years of service and was a Vietnam veteran. He was also retired from WCI
after 20 years of service. He was born April 23, 1938.He is survived by his
wife, Brenda Chance; four children, Christopher, Carolyn, Dinah and Danny;
a sister, Charlcie Hogan; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and
several nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ethel Storey Brown
Died July 13, 2001

BOGALUSA - Mrs. Ethel Storey Brown, 86, a resident of Bogalusa, died Friday
at Bogalusa Community Medical Center. She was a member of Pettitt Memorial
Baptist Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Clyde E. and
Margie Brown of Bogalusa; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lucille Freeman
of Bogalusa and Jean and Robert Cadierre of Houma; three sisters, Faye
Strahan, Grace Rawls and Ruby Spiers, all of Bogalusa; 11 grandchildren;
and numerous great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband,
Clyde H. Brown; and a son, Ronald Brown.Visitation was held at
Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home yesterday from 5-10 p.m. and was to continue
today from 9 a.m. until the chapel funeral service at 2 p.m. The Rev. Tommy
Varnado will conduct the service and interment will be in Ponemah Cemetery.

W.L. Horn
Died July 11, 2001

ANGIE - W. L. Horn, 86, a resident of Old Columbia Road in Angie died
Wednesday at his home. W.L. Horn, the youngest of three children, was born
July 12, 1913 to the late Nettie Smith Horn and Leige Horn in Mathisville,
MS. God called his servant home to rest at the age of 87 years, 11 months,
29 days.He was inducted into the army June 26, 1945. After being injured he
was honorably discharged January 31, 1946 as a private. He was a raffle
expert and received the World War II Victory Medal.In April 1954 he married
Carrie B. Roberts Spikes.In 1959 the couple moved from Richmond, CA, to
Angie. In the early 60's he joined Live Oak United Methodist Church under
the leadership of the Rev. A. E. Franklin. He was an active member of the
church serving as chairman of the trustees for many years until his health
failed. He continued to serve in a supervisory capacity. Under his guidance
as trustee chairman, working with the pastor, he was able to accomplished
many things include a new fellowship hall and renovations and extensions of
the church sanctuary. He served as a member of finance committee,
administrative counsel, and United Methodist Men. He was a loyal member
until his death and believed that rules should be followed in the works of
the church. He loved hunting, fishing and baseball and supported the Live
Oak Church softball team and served as manager of the Live Oak baseball
team. He believed in teaching the game with self-discipline.He leaves to
cherish his memories, a devoted and loving wife, Carrie B. Horn; a
grandson, Ernest(Stephanie) Spikes, Jr.; one daughter-in-law, Edna(Robert)
Bickham; three great-grandchildren, Quenzell Spikes of Hammond, and Preston
Spikes and Brandon Harry, both of Angie; one great-great-grandchild,
Dorlissia Robinson of Baton Rouge; three God-children, Ronnie Simmon of
Baton Rouge, Breandis Sheridan of Angie and Derrick Johnson of Oakland, CA;
three nephews: Fred(Alvernis) Holliman of MS; Demetri Roberts and
Mack(Beauty) Anderson, both of Chicago, IL; three nieces, Johnnie Mae
Sandifer of Chicago, IL, Darlene Roberts of Arizona and Dalphine Roberts of
Jackson, MS; a special brother-in-law, Hollis (Lillian) Roberts; four
sister-in-laws, Rosie Martin and Roxie Roberts, both of Angie, and Ella
Harris and Minnie Ashley both of Richmond, CA; a special niece and nephew,
Craig and Rosia Walls of Varnado; a spiritual family, the Rev. Dale (Deola)
Branch and family; and a host of great nieces, nephews, relatives and
friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Ernest Spikes Sr.;
a God-son, Deon Weary; two sisters, Estella Horn Holliman Roberts and
Marzella Horn Anderson.Visitation will be at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in
Bogalusa tomorrow from 2-5 p.m. and will continue Tuesday at Live Oak
United Methodist Church in Angie at 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. The
Rev. Bruce Brown will officiate. Interment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery
in Angie.

Washington Parish, the daughter of the late Hezzie K. Magee and Lottie
Phelps Magee. She was a waitress and had operated Troy's #II Tavern in
Warnerton for several years. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law,
Regina and Mike Forbes of Franklinton; two sisters, Helen Holmes of
Tylertown and Nola Spears of Franklinton; a grandson and his wife, Justin
and Key Murrell; a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Murrell; and several nieces

TYLER, TX - George Edward Woodward, 79, a resident of Tyler, TX died
Saturday. He was born March 13, 1922 in Varnado to George A. Woodward and
Minnie Edwards Stallings of Bogalusa. He served in the U.S. Navy during
World War II as a Lieutenant on the U.S.S. North Carolina, and went on to
graduate with a Master of Science degree from Louisiana State University.
He was then employed for 32 years as a Research Chemist with Dow Chemical
Company in Freeport, TX. While in Freeport, he served on the Board of
Regents for Brazosport College and was active in Boy Scouts of America,
Brazosport Yatch Club, Brazosport Airplane Modelers Club and the United
Methodist Church. Following retirement from Dow Chemical, Woodward and his
wife, Sammye, moved to Tyler in 1982, where they became members of Marvin
United Methodist Church. He was a member of MarvinChancel Choir, Robinson
Hand Bell Ensemble, and was acitve with Marvin UMC's local mission work, as
well as a member of the Men's Wednesday Luncheon Bible Class and the
Crusaders Sunday School Class of Marvin United Methodist Church. Another of
Woodward's activities was woodworking and restoration for the church as
well as for friends and family.Survivors include his wife, Sammye Patton
Woodward; two sons, George Randall and wife, Mariana of Chandler, AZ and
Raymond Leslie and wife, Debra of Whitehouse, TX; a daughter, Rebecca Sue
Shuman and husband, Michael of Houston, TX; grandchildren Kelly Elizabeth,
Ellen Marie, and George Samuel of Chandler, AZ and Nathan Gray of
Whitehouse, TX; a step-grandson, Joshua Gayle Shuman of Angleton, TX;

Automotive Repair in Bogalsua for many years, taught auto body repair for
several years through Sullivan-Vo-Tech, was a member of Briarwood Baptist
Church, a retired mechanic, and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Orleans. She received a master's degree in education from the University of
Mississippi. She taught at Northside Grammar School in Bogalusa for more
than 50 years. She also taught school on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After
her retirement, she was a volunteer and caseworker for an elderly
assistance program on the Gulf Coast.She is survived by her sister, Estelle
Crull Rester; nine nieces and nephews; and many cousins.Preceding her in

BOGALUSA - Chief Warrant Officer Timothy Adams Harris, an electronics
specialist who took command of a Coast Guard station on St. Paul Island,
Alaska, this month, died Tuesday of gunshot wounds. Harris was 33.Harris
was born in Baton Rouge and grew up in Bogalusa. Though he worked in
Alaska, he considered Bogalusa his permanent home and had a house here. He
was a graduate of Bogalusa High School. Harris enlisted in the Coast Guard
in 1986. He completed his recruit training at Cape May, NJ, was assigned as
a seaman apprentice aboard the cutter Firebush, and graduated from the
Coast Guard's electronics school in New York as an electronics technician
in 1988.Harris served in Port Arkansas, TX, and also aboard the cutters
Salvia and Sweetgum. He was assigned to the Grand Isle station from 1993
until 1996. He spent two years at the Navigation Center in Alexandria,
Virginia. From June 1998 until June of this year, he was assigned to the
Electronics Support Detachment in New Orleans.On June 1, Harris was
commissioned as a chief warrant officer and named the new commanding
officer of the LORAN, long range navigation station on St. Paul Island in
the Bering Sea off the Alaska coast. He assumed command July 3.During his
Coast Guard career, Harris received numerous medals and citations,
including awards for achievement, humanitarian service, national defense
and sea service, and unit commendations and ribbons.He is survived by his
wife, Jeanette George Harris; a son, Joshua Adams Harris; a daughter, Jesse
Leatrice Harris; his mother, Sara Bartels Rayburn; his father, Jimmy Earl
Harris; his step-father, James D. Rayburn; two half-brothers, James David

DENHAM SPRINGS - Washington Parish native and long-time Sheridan resident
Ray Smith, 60, a resident of Denham Springs, died Saturday in Summit
Hospital, Baton Rouge. The son of the late Hubert and Fannie Lang Smith, he
was a member of Sonlight Ministries and an avid outdoorsman who loved to
hunt and fish. He is survived by his twin brother, Roy Smith, a resident of
Denham Springs; three sisters, Pat Philpot and Arlene Spurgeon, both of
Denham Springs and Betty Pope of Franklinton; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held yesterday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Seale Funeral Home in
Denham Springs and continued today at 9 a.m. until time for the funeral
service at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Bro. Benny Jones will
officiate, with interment following in the Lang-Simmons Cemetery at
Sheridan.

Administration Hospital in New Orleans.He is survived by a sister, Jessie
Mae Taylor of Tarpon Springs, FL; four nieces; three nephews; other
relatives and friends.Preceding him in death was his father, Jessie "Red"
Jennings; his mother, Johnie Mae Jennings; three brothers, O.J. Jennings;
Oscar "Ruff" Selman and Calvin Lee Selman; and a niece, Brenda
Savant.Visitation will be tomorrow at Brown-McGehee Funeral Home at 8 a.m.
until time of services at 10 a.m.Interment will follow in Ponemah Cemetery.
