She lived in Franklinton and was a retired administrative assistant for the 22nd Judicial District Attorney's office. She was survived by two daughters, Michelle (Shelly) Blair Kaltenbaugh and husband Thomas Kaltenbaugh of Lakeland, FL, and Tracy Blair Petty and husband Donald Petty of New Orleans; two sons, Gregory Vaughn Blair and wife Lisa W. Blair of Pollack, and Jewell Scott Blair and wife Susan Jones Blair of Varnado. She was also survived by five stepchildren, Ginger Burris McNutt of Coleman, TX, Jill Burris Melanson and husband E. J. (Buddy) Melanson of Covington, James M. (Chip) Burris and wife Brenda Burch Burris of Tylertown, Robert F. (Bob) Burris and wife Debra Ford Burris of Mandeville, and David H. Burris and wife Dana Holder Burris of Franklinton; four sisters, Marie Evon Koonsz and Terry Seal, both of Franklinton, Janice O'Connor and Lana Todd, both of Baton Rouge; one brother, Wayne Cantrell, Pass-A-Grille Beach, FL; four grandchildren; 17 step-grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren. Burris was preceded in death by her husband, James M. (Jim) Burris. Visitation was held in the chapel of the Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton from 6-8 p.m. yesterday and will continue at 1 p.m. on Sunday until the funeral service which will follow at 3 p.m. with Rev. Karl Tingle officiating. Burial will take place in Ellis Cemetery. BEATRICE R. WISSEL (died June 30, 2000) Beatrice R. Wissel, 73, and a resident of Star Hill Community, died at 7 p.m. Friday at the Riverside Medical Center. She was a member of the Star Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She was survived by one daughter, Sally Jane Caples of Franklinton; two sons, Sam J. Smith of Bogue Chitto, MS and Abel Smith of Franklinton. She was also survived by two sisters, Lillie Mae Mann of Denham Springs and Eva Richardson of Texas; four brothers, Floyd Richardson of Ponchatoula, Hollis Richardson, J.C. Richardson and Eddie Bill Richardson, all of Dallas, TX; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren. Wissel was preceded in death by her first husband, Abel Smith, and her second husband, Lawrence Wissel. Foil, 82, died Saturday at 1 p.m. in Riverside Medical Center. He was a retired operator for Exxon Refinery in Baton Rouge and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Franklinton. Survivors include one brother, Arnold Foil of Bogalusa; four nieces, Lanell Daniel of Georgia, June Graham of Franklinton, Sue Hingle of Kentwood, and Becky Civello of Baton Rouge, two nephews, Gary Foil of Bogalusa, and William D. Foil of Franklinton; and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delos D. and Mima Bateman Foil; two brothers, Alvin and Roy Foil; and a sister, Elaine Foil Daniel. She was a retired school teacher of the Washington Parish School System. She was also a member of the Crain's Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by three grandchildren, Grant Thomas, Carla Renee Thomas, and Chanda Brant all of Pine; one brother, Lavell Crain of Pine; two sisters, Mrs. Hal (Annette) Hendrick, and Mrs. Reggie (Maureen) Bourne both of Pine; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. July 11, 2000 EDITH OCTAVIA BATEMAN (died July 9, 2000) COVINGTON - Edith Bateman died July 9, 2000 after a brief illness with colon cancer. "Mom, you have taught us all the true meaning of the words: love, strength and courage." She was born February 7 in Covington and went to Texas as a young bride in 1953. Edith is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and her husband Delbert, who died in 1983. She is survived by sons, Gary of Texas City, TX and Ron of Houston, TX; a granddaughter, Hayley Duffy Bateman of Hollond, MI; a brother, John L. Roberts of Phoenix, AZ; a longtime companion, Bill McCulloch of Texas City, TX; numerous relatives and a host of friends. Edith was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was employed by White's during her years in Texas City. She was an avid bowler and participated in various leagues. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. tomorrow at Enon Baptist Church. BARBARA "BEE" PARKER BROOKS INGLEWOOD, CA - Barbara "Bee" Parker Brooks, born August 21, 1916, a former resident of Bogalusa for over 60 years, passed on Sunday, July 9, 2000, in Centinela Hospital, Inglewood, CA. Brooks is survived by two sons, Joe Dyer of Los Angeles, CA and Edward Parker, Jr., of Inglewood, CA; two daughters, Shirley Pierre of Inglewood, CA and Barbara Morris of Gardena, CA; two sisters, Abrey Wheatley of Las Vega, NV and Bertha Stevenson of Seattle, WA; one brother, Caleb Fletcher of Inglewood, CA; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. REVIEW OF LIFE: The book of life opened for Barbara "Bee" Fletcher Parker Brooks on August 21, 1916 in Wisner, LA. Barbara was the sixth child of Abe and Missouri Fletcher. She met and married Joe Dyer, St. and relocated to the developing southern sawmill town of Bogalusa, LA in 1933. To this union five children were born, Joe Jr., Eula Beatrice, Vergie Lee, Shirley Mae, and Barbara Jean. Joe Sr., Eula, and Vergie Lee predeceased her. On May 15, 1948, she married Edward Parker, who predeceased her in August of 1981, after 33 years of marriage. To this union, there were blessed to adopt a grandson in 1969, Edward Parker, Jr. As a young woman, she united with the Second Baptist Church in Bogalusa, later moving her membership to Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she was an active, hardworking member of the Deaconess Stewardship Board. She loved her duty asking other Stewardship members of "Settingup" the communion table. She united with John Brooks in March of 1985, later established residence in Marrero, LA, in 1986 "across the river" from New Orleans where they resided unto 1997 when ill health make it necessary for both of them to relocate. John moved to Denver, CO, to live with is daughter, Ruth, and "Ms. Bee" as she was known for many years, moved to California to be with her four children. The grandchildren immensely enjoyed hearing her tell about life on the plantation, farming, and limited schooling when it was cotton picking time, and how some of her siblings plotted to leave home to avoid picking cotton. She leaves her legacy to her children and grandchildren alike, many cherished words of wisdom, advice, and encouragement. Her beautiful, infectious smile, lovely dimples, unlimited generosity, and her love for people will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. She was a retired lunchroom worker from Enon School and a member of Enon Baptist Church. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Delores Perry of Zachary, William and Dorothy Perry of Theodore, AL, Dewitt and Sharon Perry, Leon and Fran Perry, all of Franklinton; three brothers, Hubert Smith of Livingston, C. C. Smith of Watson, and Charles Smith of Eight Mile, AL; a sister, Gladys Valliant of Mt. Hermon; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Durward Perry and Zeke Ratcliff. July 25, 2000 OLA MAE McKENZIE THORNHILL (died July 24, 2000) BOGALUSA - Ola Mae McKenzie Thornhill, 90, a resident of Milltown Manor in Bogalusa and a lifelong resident of Foxworth, died yesterday in Bogalusa Community Hospital Community Medical Center. She was the last survivor of the Willie McKenzie and Ella Bracey family. She is survived by three children, Harry L. (Donnice) Thornhill, Wanda (Tommy) Carney and Thomas Ray (Peggy) Thornhill; nine grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Edward Thornhill. July 26, 2000 BERT HUNTER LEWIS, M.D. (died July 25, 2000) ANGIE - Dr. Bert Hunter Lewis, 83, a resident of Angie and a retired country doctor and farmer, died Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in his home of a heart attack. Born to Bert L. Lewis and Faye Hunter Lewis on March 22, 1917 in El Reno, OK, he was an only child. Lewis graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1939. He was a 1942 graduate of L.S.U. School of Medicine. He met and married his wife, Thelma DeFelice Lewis, a registered nurse during his medical internship at Charity Hospital. She worked beside her husband during his medical career at Angie. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country in North Africa. After being discharged as a major, he began his medical practice at the Gray-Lewis Clinic in Springhill, LA. In 1947, he came to Angie to begin medical practice with Dr. Ruffin Fornea. After the death of Dr. Fornea, he remained in private practice until his retirement in 1980. During his years. of practice, he became the medical director for Bogalusa Plasma and also worked part time in the medical clinic at L.S.U. Washington-St. Tammany Regional Medical Center in Bogalusa until his final retirement in 1993. Lewis is survived by his wife, Thelma DeFelice Lewis of Angie; four children, Mike Lewis of Gulfport, MS, Stephanie Lewis of St. Francisville, Jeff Lewis of Bonner Creek, and Chris Lewis of Varnado; two daughters-in- law, Kim Wascom Lewis of Bonner Creek and Kay Flynt Lewis of Varnado; eleven grandchildren, Heather McFadden, Jennifer McFadden, Hunter Farrar, Brandon Farrar, Jeff Lewis, Jr., Leslie Lewis Toups, Melissa Lewis, Justin Lewis, Brittany Hartford, Christal Lewis and Stephanie Lewis; and a great- grandchild, Taylor Toups. He will also be missed by a by a devoted employee and friend of 24 years, Vern Peters. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert L. and Faye Hunter Lewis. MURRAY McFREDERICK BROWN (died July 22, 2000) BOGALUSA - Murray McFrederick Brown, 56, a resident of Seattle, WA and a former resident of Bogalusa, died Saturday in Lakewood, WA. Born on April 23, 1944, he was the second child to the union of Murray Allan and Bertha Belle Brown of Bogalusa. He was baptized and began attending St. Paul AME Church in Bogalusa at an early age until he left home in 1965 to join the United States Army. While serving his country in Fort Knox, KY, he trained in photography in which field he worked in New York, NY after receiving an honorable discharge from the army. Brown later attended Southern University in Baton Rouge and obtained a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. He then moved to Seattle, WA and worked several jobs in his profession including working over twenty-four years for the State of Washington. He was a member of First AME Church in Seattle, WA. He is survived by his parents, Murray A. and Bertha B. Brown; a son and daughter, Andrea and Wesley Brown; five brothers, Lawrence Brown, Kenneth Brown, Clark Brown, Gerald Brown, and George Brown; five sisters, Loraine Battle, Loretta Brown, Diane Bullock, Janice Levingston, and Faye Williams; a granddaughter, Alexis Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.
