She was an employee of Danny's Fried Chicken in Franklinton. Survivors include her husband, John Gregory Jones; a son, L. J. Gay and two daughters, Harley Freeman Jones and Theresa Grace Gay, all of Franklinton; three stepchildren, John Gregory Jones Jr. and Justin Cody Jones of Franklinton and Brandy Nicole Jones of Franklinton; her mother, Geraldine Freeman of Bogalusa; three sisters, Shirley Freeman of Jackson, Peggy Freeman and Susie Freeman, both of Bogalusa; a brother, Dale Freeman Jr.. of Bogalusa. ALINE BIJOU HOBGOOD (died May 31, 2000) BATON ROUGE - Mrs. Aline Bijou Hobgood, 79, of Baton Rouge, died Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge. She was a member of St. Gerard Mejella Catholic Church and a native of Alexandria. Survivors include two daughters, Melissa M. Williams of Opelousas, and Kim H. Wright of Baton Rouge; and two granddaughters, Sarah and Jessica Wright, both of Baton Rouge. Mrs. Hobgood was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas N. Hobgood; three sister, Youline Bijou Normand, Doris Bijou Cicero and Eunice Bijou Lacombe; and two brothers, Fred J. and Anthony Bijou. June 4, 2000 BETTY LYNN HART CALAHAN (died May 30, 2000) FRANKLINTON - A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 6, for Betty Lynn Hart Calahan, who died Tuesday, May 30, at the St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. She was 44 years old and a resident of 1129 Parker St., Franklinton. She was survived by her parents, sister Ora Lee Hart and Brother Hilton Hart, both of Franklinton; five sister, Carolyn Hart of Atlanta, GA., Marilyn (Rev. Larry) Magee of Franklinton, Sandra (J.D.) Manning and Sheral (Donald) George, all of Baton Rouge, and Ishea Hart of Bogalusa; and six brothers, Rev. Lawrence M. Hart of Shreveport, Rev. He was 82 years old. RUTH HELEN HERRINGTON HUDSPETH (died June 1, 2000) BOGALUSA - Ruth Helen Herrington Hudspeth, born August 13, 1920, a long time resident of Bogalusa, passed away June 1, 2000, at the home of her son, David Hudspeth, in Dothan, Alabama. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Joy Hudpseth of Abita Springs, and David and Marcia Hudspeth of Dothan, Ala,; five grandchildren: Michael and Chris Hudspeth of Abita Springs, Mandy Hudspeth of Dothan, Ala.; and one great granddaughter, Alexis Hudspeth of Abita Springs. Additionally, she is survived by two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ludy H. Foil of Bogalusa, Juanita and Kenneth Stoltz of Belle Rive, Ill., and one brother and a sister-in-law, Earl and Marjory Herrington of Hattiesburg, Miss. RUTH 'PAULINE' RITCHIE McCLAIN (died June 2, 2000) OCEAN SPRINGS - A Funeral service will be held tomorrow for Ruth "Pauline" Ritchie McClain, age 53, who died Friday in Pascagoula, Miss. Mrs. McClain was born in Bogalusa and had been a resident of the coast since 1963. She was a family oriented person and a homemaker. She was the former wife of Kenny McClain Sr. of Ocean Springs. They had three children together. She was of the Baptist faith. She was survived by two sons, Danny McClain and Donny McClain, both of Ocean Springs; two sisters, Elsie Maier and Eunice Stewart, both of Livingston, La.; three brothers, Eugene Ritchie and Kenneth Ritchie, both of Slidell, and William "Bo" Ritchie, of Butler, Fla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenny McClain Jr.. and her parents, Daniel T. Ritchie and Lillie Mae Ritchie. EUGENE PITTMAN (Died May 27, 2000) FRANKLINTON - A funeral service will held on Tuesday for Eugene Pittman, who died Saturday, May 27, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Franklinton. He was 80 years old and a former resident of 306 16th Ave. in Franklinton. He was survived by two sisters, Leila Mae Pittman of Bogalusa and Gertrude Pittman of Franklinton and thirty-two children. Visitation will be at the Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton on Tuesday, June 6, from 3 p.m. until the funeral service begins at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Walker officiating. SARA ELIZABETH SHERIDAN (died June 3, 2000) FRANKLINTON - A funeral service will be held today for Sara Elizabeth Sheridan, who died of cancer on Saturday at her residence in Pearl River. She was 8 years old. She was a native of Covington and a resident of Pearl River. She was survived by her parents, Wade and Melissa Sheridan; a sister, Tenill Sheridan and a brother, Nathan Sheridan; her grandparents. June 6, 2000 JANELLA COTTON CARROLL (died June 4, 2000) THOMAS - Janella Cotton Carroll, 63, a resident of Covington, died 11:45 p.m. Sunday in St. Tammany Hospital at Covington. Survivors include her three sons, Charles Jerrell, Samuel Jerrell, both of Thomas, and Dale Jerrell of Bush; two brothers, Sidney Cotton, and Skip Cotton both of Bogalusa; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Woodward. VIRGINIA ELIZABETH MARTIN (died June 3, 2000) LAS CRUCES, NM - Virginia Elizabeth Martin died Saturday in her home in Las Cruces, NM. She was the daughter of Allen Leverett smith and Lena Mowrie Mack Smith, born in Boston, MA on July 8, 1924. She attended school in Boston. She enlisted in the United States Naval Reserves (WAVES) and served during World War II training Navy pilots. In 1947, Mrs. Martin moved to Alamagordo, NM and worked in civilian personnel and at the library at Holloman Air Force Base. She resumed her career in personnel after moving to Houston, TX in 1978. There she worked as a personnel director at Lord and Taylor for many years. For the last seven years she resided in Louisiana. In march of this year, she returned to New Mexico. Mrs. Martin was an intelligent, kind, dignified and loving woman who is irreplaceable to her family and many, many friends all over the country. Where they knew her as "Jean", "Ginnie", or "Virginia", she was respected and loved by all who knew her. She was a member of the Pilgrim John Howland Society, New England Historic Genealogical Society and American Society for Personnel Administrators and a mayflower descendant. OCTAVIA MORRIS PIGOTT (died June 1, 2000) ANGIE - Mrs. Octavia Morris Pigott, 57, of 63165 Hollis Lester Rd, Angie died Thursday in Lakeview Regional Medical Center, Covington. Sister Octavia Morris Pigott was born January 23, 1943 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman (Oudia) Morris of Angie. At an early age, she joiner the Center Baptist Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. George Green and remained a member of the leadership of Pastor Sidney Jones at an early age she was a member of the Eastern Star. Sister Pigott graduated from Wesley Ray High School in 1961. After that she was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Samuel Pigott and to this union three children were born. Survivors include her husband, Samuel Oneal Pigott; son, Rochelle M. Vernon, NY, died of colon cancer at 5:20 p.m. last Wednesday at South Fulton Medical Center Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Rev. Lampton had gone to Atlanta to visit his sister Carliss at which time he took ill and passed away. His wife and family was by his side at the time of death. Rev. Lampton is the older brother of Bobby Ray Lampton. Survivors include his devoted wife of 26 years, Shirley Lampton; two sons, George Emmanuel and Michael Guion; two daughters, Valerie and Stephanie; two brothers, Bobby Ray (Gladys) Lampton of Bogalusa, and Don (Mary) Lampton of Morningside, MD; four sisters, Barbara McAllister and Patricia Lampton of Mt. Interment will following the Bogalusa Cemetery. June 8, 2000 REV. WILLIE RAY BLACKBURN, SR. (died June 6, 2000) FRANKLINTON - The Rev. Willie Ray Blackburn, Sr., 65, a resident of Fairbanks, AK died Saturday at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, WA. Rev. Blackburn was a native of Mt. Hermon. He was born on July 19, 1934 to the late Ollie Mae Blackburn and Matthew Blackburn. At an early age, he joined the Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J.R. Vernon. He attended Vernon High School and upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served two tours in the Viet Nam War and received a Purple Heart for his courageous service. After 20 years with the military, he tried while stationed in Ft. Wainwright in Fairbanks, AK. He was then pastor of the True Victory Baptist Church in North Pole, AK. He was also a former deputy with the Washington Parish Justice of the Peace and Constables Association. He was a member of Lawrence Creek Missionary Baptist Church, and recently elected to the Washington Parish Democratic Central Committee. Hermon. ANNA MAE WELCH (died June 9, 2000) GULFPORT - Anna Mae Welch, 86, a resident of Gulfport, Mississippi and a native of Franklinton, died last Friday. JAMES ALCUS WARNER (died June 25, 2000) BOGALUSA - James Alcus Warner, 57, longtime local funeral director and embalmer from Bogalusa; died yesterday in St. Tammany Parish Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Elfie Pace Warner, a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly W, and Ronnie Parker; a son, Jason Todd Warner; an uncle, Winfred Warner; an aunt, Ruby Greenburg; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur "Doc" Warner and Lovie Warner. He was an active member of Highland Baptist Church, a member of Center Lodge 244 F&AM and Bogalusa Chapter 61, Royal Arch Masons; a graduate of the Commonwealth College of Science in Houston; and a member of the Louisiana State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors. He also served with the Louisiana National Guard, 205th Engineer Battalion, as a medic. James A. Warner will always be remembered for his compassion in serving people in their time of need. June 27, 2000 WILLIE MAY MILLER HELTON (died June 26, 2000) BOGALUSA - Mrs. Willie May Miller Wheat Helton, 80, a resident of Bogalusa, died yesterday in Bogalusa Medical Center. She was a member of Monroe Street Baptist Church. June 27, 2000 EARNEST ROOSEVELT "BOOG" PIGOTT (died June 24, 2000) ANGIE - Earnest Roosevelt "Boog" Piggott, 76, a resident of Angie, died Saturday in LSU Washington - St. Tammany Regional Medical Center, Bogalusa. At an early age, he answered the call to serve his country and entered into the United States Navy. On October 1, 1944, he was deployed to a secret mission of war while aboard to USS Frederick Funston. He received a commendation for this service. On Dec. 28, 1945, he received an honorable discharge at the rank of Steward's Mate First Class. During his life, some of the jobs he held that he enjoyed included woodcutting, farming, and being a mechanic. He could repair almost anything mechanical or give instructions on repairing the item. His favorite pastime was drinking a cup of coffee with his visitors and talking about a vast array of subjects, all of which he always had ideas and opinions about. At an early age, he joined in Christian fellowship at Wesley Ray United Methodist Church. As a member, he belonged to the United Methodist Mens Club, Tribe No. 8, 100 Mens Club and Class #1. Survivors include his wife, Frances B. Adams; two daughters, Shirley McCarthey and Yvonne Adams Williams, both of Isabel; two sons, Thomas Melvin Adams of Isabel and Curtis D. Billy Gill officiating. Interment will follow in the Adams Cemetery. PAUL JERRY HOBGOOD (died June 27, 2000) BOGALUSA - Paul Jerry Hobgood of Long Beach, MS, died Tuesday in Gulfport, MS. He was a native of Bogalusa and graduated from Bogalusa High School in 1947 and from Louisiana tech University in 1951 with a major in accounting. Immediately after graduating, he volunteered for military service in the U.S. Air Force in response to the Korean War. He was later self-employed as an accountant and tax consultant in Bogalusa for eight years before joining Federal Land Bank and Farm Credit Bank as an auditor and Federal Bank Examiner. He became assistant resident supervisor of bank examiners for the Carolina, Georgia and Florida. He moved to Long Beach in 1972 and was employed as an auditor for Defense Contract Audit Agency at Ingallas and at Stennis Space Center. He was the resident auditor for National Oceanographic Research and Development Agency at Stennis Space Center when he retired in 1989. Survivors include his wife, Dot Welch Hobgood of Long Beach; a son, Carlton Hobgood of Madison; a sister, Nancy Hobgood Kivett of Gonzales, LA. Visitation will be at Reimann Funeral Home in Long Beach on Friday, June 30, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 12:15 p.m. Interment at National Cemetery in Biloxi will be private. The family prefers memorial donation to St. Jude's Children Hospital, 322 Lauderdale St., N., Memphis, TN 38105, or to one's favorite charity. THOMAS E. MATTOCKS (died June 26, 2000) MT. HERMON - MSG. Thomas E. Mattocks, 69, U.S. Army, retired, died on Monday of cancer at his residence in Mt. Hermon. A native of Chicago, IL, he was a former longtime resident of Lacombe and a resident of Mt. Hermon for five years. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Berlin Air Life following World War II and Korea, a U.S. Army Recruiter for 12 years and most recently, JROTC instructor at Bogalusa High School. He was named Army Reserve Recruiter of the Year by the Army New Orleans District Recruiting Command and was presented the Army Achievement Medal. He also served in the Navy for eight years and was an active duty recruiter for the Army National Guard in Slidell. Among his awards and decorations are the Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal with Berlin Airlift Device. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen LeBlanc Mattocks of Mt. Hermon; daughters, Michelle M. Wells of Rowlett, TX, Deborah M. Jessup of Lacombe, Cherie M. Dooley of Conyers, GA; and three grandchildren, Joel A. Wells, Payton M. Dooley and Kathleen A. Jessup. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Survivors include her three daughters and sons-in-law, RaNaye U. and Polo Capo, Metta U. and Doyle McMillian, and Sverre "Suet" Ulvik; a daughter-in- law, Geneva Ulvik Stuart; sisters, RouDella Jones and Garry and Sepnos Adams. Preceded in death by her husband, Sverre Ulvik of Bogalusa; three sons, Einard Ulvik, LaVere Ulvik and Darnell Ulvik; and by two grandchildren, Ronald Capo and DeAnn Capo.
