Remembering Mrs. Gilda Magee
Mrs. Gilda Brumfield Magee died at the age of 98. With her passing we have lost a 
part of our community’s history. Mrs. Gilda touched the lives of so many of us 
during her 27 years as a teacher in the Mt. Hermon School. She was born in 1901 
and grew up in Sunny Hill community, graduating from high school there at an early 
age. She taught school half a year at Stoney Point when she was 17 years old, 
walking five miles every day. She was principal of a little two room school at 
Mt. Ebal, walking two miles from a boarding house to the school the remainder of 
her first year. She continued teaching in other small schools until offered a 
position in the Bogalusa city schools. After teaching there for two years, she 
taught at Mt. Hermon for 27 years. She was a wonderful teacher and friend to her 
students and parents. She enjoyed teaching and working with people. Her brilliant 
mind and vibrant personality have been a shinning light that has touched the hearts 
of so many people in our community.

Mrs. Gilda’s mind was exceedingly sharp and always filed with names, dates and 
event of the past. Friends enjoyed visiting and listening to her reminisce. She 
was a lovely woman, always full of laughter and interested in the world around her.

It was truly a pleasure to know Mrs. Gilda. She will not be forgotten, as she was 
such a vital part of our community for so many years.

She was married to the late Norman Magee, one of our community’s early families. 
The old home place dates back the 1840’s.

Mrs. Gilda’s two daughters, Betty and Pat, were with her much of the time and were 
a great comfort to her.

We will all miss Mrs. Gilda.
