Hermon and resident of Chicago, IL., died Friday in Chicago. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Josephine Murral and Robert Bond of Chicago; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph R. and Camille Robinson of Fairfield, CA., and Clinton Earl and Anita Robinson of Los Angeles; three sisters, Maria Crain of Franklinton, Theresa Overstreet of Richmond, CA and Creola Batchelor of Los Angeles and one brother and his spouse, James Murray "Murl" and Eddie Joe Vernon of Mt. Hermon. Coney is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Leonia Webb of McComb, Edna Mae Vernon of Arizona, and Doretha and Ruth Vernon of Franklinton; ten grandchildren, four with spouses,, Rhonda E. and Lloyd James of Arlington, TX, Clinton E. Interment will follow in the Vernon Family Cemetery. ----------------------------------------------------- MARCH 2, 2000 ----------------------------------------------------- RUTHA TAYLOR BELL Died Feb. 25, 2000) FRANKLINTON - Rutha Taylor Bell, age 92, a native of Franklinton and resident of 3337 St. Ann Street, New Orleans died Friday at Mercy Hospital in New Orleans. Visitation will be held tomorrow at the Sweet Home Church of Christ Holiness from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m.. Elder Washington Drake will officiate. Interment will follow in the Sweet Home Cemetery. Crain and Sons Funeral Home of Franklinton is in charge of the arrangements. COLEMAN BERNSTEIN Died Feb. 29, 2000 FRANKLINTON - Coleman Bernstein, age 81, a native of New Orleans and resident of Franklinton and Mandeville simultaneously, died Tuesday at his home in Mandeville. Bernstein received a bachelor's degree from Tulane University in 1937. He was a councilman in Franklinton for eight years and the mayor pro-tem for six years. He was instrumental in getting Franklinton Airport built and in securing the land for Riverside Medical Hospital in Franklinton. Bernstein was a former owner of The Boston Stores. He was a member of the Franklinton Chamber of Commerce, the Lion's Club, The American Legion, the Franklinton Country Club, the Masonic Lodge, the Skeet Club and the Northshore Jewish Congregation. He was also a Navy veteran of WWII, where he served in the Pacific Theater. His survivors include his wife, Doris Zilberman Bernstein; a daughter, Janice Bernstein Langlinals; a son, Arthur S. Bernstein and four grandchildren. A graveside service was held at Hebrew Rest Cemetery No. 3 in New Orleans. LONIA B. HARRIS Died 29, 2000 BOGALUSA - Lonia B. Harris, age 92, a resident of 545 East Avenue, Bogalusa, died Thursday at her home. She is survived by one son, Willie Ray Harris of Queensboro, NY; one sister, Alice Brumfield of New Orleans and four brothers, Dewitt Brumfield of Bogalusa, J. K. Brumfield of Miami, Willie B. Brumfield of New Orleans and Charlie Brumfield of New Orleans. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Harris; two sisters, Myrtis Baggett and Jeanette Brumfield and three brothers, Albert Brumfield, Robert Brumfield and Walter Brumfield. Visitation will be held tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m. at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Bogalusa. The family hour will be from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, with Dr. Aaron Thompson officiating. Interment will be in the Bogalusa Cemetery. EUGENE KELLER Died Feb. 26, 2000 BOGALUSA - Eugene Keller, age 67, a resident of 16456 Keller Lane, Bogalusa, died Saturday at Washington - St. Tammany Regional Medical Center. Keller is survived by two daughters, Judy Smith of Merriville, IN and Melissa Keller of Chicago; three sons, Andre Keller of Chicago, Kenneth Keller of Milwaukee and Kevin Keller of St. Steward. GA; three sisters, Leenandria Miller of New Orleans, Ida Mae Smith of Bogalusa and Sadie Marshall of Bogalusa and one brother, Curtis Martin of Bogalusa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Letha and Wallace Keller; one son, Phillip Gerrared Kellar; one sister, Lillie Mae Creighton and two brothers, Carter "Dub" Keller and George Keller. Visitation will be held at Annunciation Catholic Church from 9 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. on Saturday. The funeral service will take place on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church. Father Phelps will officiate. Interment will be in the McDuffy Cemetery in Lee's Creek. FLOY McKAY WILLIAMS Died March 1, 2000 BOGALUSA - Floy McKay Williams, age 101, a resident of Bogalusa, died yesterday at her home. A retired teacher who taught in Bogalusa City Schools for 41 years, Williams was also active in civic and community affairs during her teaching years. An active member of the Elizabeth Sullivan Memorial Methodist Church, she served on the administrative board, taught classes in Sunday School and served as Superintendent of the Children's Division until her retirement. Williams is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, I. J. Williams. Visitation will be held at the Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight and will continue tomorrow at 9 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 11 a.m. in the chapel. PAULA JO MITCHELL Died March 2, 2000 BOGALUSA - Paula Jo Mitchell, age 44, a resident of Bogalusa died this morning at the Bogalusa Community Medical Center. She is survived by her husband, Greg Mitchell of Bogalusa; two daughters, Tiffany and Haley Mitchell of Bogalusa; her parents, Beatrice and Myrle Carrierre of Bogalusa; three sisters, Ouida Harris of Lucedale, MS, Ann Kenny of Bogalusa and Beverly Little of Bogalusa and two brothers, Milton Earl Carrierre of Angie and Lavon Carrierre of Bogalusa. Died Feb. 28, 2000 FRANKLINTON - Lucious Williams Sr.., age 86, a resident of Franklinton, died at his home on Monday. Williams was a retired employee of the Patterson Steel Company. He is survived by his wife, Ozzie Mae Williams; six daughters, and two sons-in-law, Marie and Percy Brock of Bogalusa, Ardeen Guy and Charlean Williams of New Orleans, Leona Williams of Franklinton, Lee Audrey and Q. C. Lewis of Tylertown and Mary Brown of Kentwood; 14 sons and nine daughters-in-law, Chester Willis of Bogalusa, Otha and Julia Williams of New Orleans, Odell and Brenda Williams of Chicago, J.D. and Elizizine Warren of Franklinton, John and Janice Warren of Franklinton, Henry and Donna Warren of New Orleans, Ray and Ella Warren of Sandy Hook, Oliver Williams of Columbia, MS, Lucious and Carolyn Williams of Baumholder, Germany, Latimore and Yvette Williams, Randy and Shunda Williams of Tylertown and Tony Williams of Franklinton and one adopted son, Danny Trotter Williams of Franklinton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adline Vernon Williams and Oliver Williams; four children; two sisters and three brothers. REGINALD CRAIN Died March 2, 2000 NEW ORLEANS - Funeral services for Reginald Crain, 70, a resident of New Orleans, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday from Union Bethel African-American Methodist Church, 2321 Thalia St. in New Orleans, the Rev. Thomas B. Brown officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in New Orleans, Crain and sons Funeral Home of Bogalusa and Franklinton directing. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today and continuing Monday after 9 a.m. at the Union Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church up until the time of the services. Mr. Crain died March 2, 2000 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center of New Orleans. Mr. Crain served in the United States Army for six years and was a veteran of World War II. He was also a retired sky cap at the New Orleans International Airport. Mr. Crain is survived by his wife, Shirley Crain, New Orleans; two daughters, Gwendolyn "Gwenie" Magee of Franklinton and Michelle Calahan of New Orleans; three sons, Reginald Crain Jr., Douglas Crain and Dr. Anthony Crain, all residents of New Orleans; three sisters, Oradee C. MRS. KATHERINE HOPE Died March 3, 2000 BOGALUSA - Funeral services are incomplete at this time for Mrs. Katherine Hope, 79, who died March 3, 2000 at Bogalusa Community Center. MR. T. J. POWELL March 3, 2000 BOGALUSA - Funeral services for Mr. T. J. Powell, 75, a resident of Resthaven Living Center, are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today in the Brown-McGehee Funeral Home chapel, the Rev. Tommy Morgan officiating. Full military rites will be performed by Magic City Post 24 of the American Legion. Burial will be in Ponemah Cemetery, Brown-McGehee Funeral Home directing. Mr. Powell died March 3, 2000 at Bogalusa Community Medical Center. Mr. Powell served in the United States Navy during World War II and the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Powell is preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Mae Powell. He is survived by one daughter, Linda Freeman, Bogalusa; one son, Thomas Powell, Bogalusa; three grandchildren, Christopher Powell of Arkansas, and Keven Wayne Freeman and Bobby Ray Freeman, both residents of Bogalusa. MR. S. J. SEAL Died Feb. 20, 2000 POPLARVILLE, MS - Funeral services for S. J. Seal, 72, former election commissioner for Pearl River County, were conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 23, 2000 at White Funeral Home in Poplarville, the Rev. Dan Finley officiating. Burial followed in Paige Cemetery in the Crossroads Community, White Funeral Home directing. Mr. Seal died Feb. 20, 2000 at Pearl River County Hospital in Poplarville. Mr. Seal was instrumental in establishing the Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department and served as the first fire chief of the department, Members of the Crossroads Fire Department and surrounding fire departments honored Mr. Seal by leading the funeral procession with numerous fire trucks with light flashing. Area firemen participated in the graveside services. A native of Pearl River County, Mr. Seal was a former chief deputy of the Pearl River County Sheriff's Department, a former Beat 2 road foreman, a veteran of the United States Army with service during World War II, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pearl River County Hospital and Nursing Home from May 1, 1977 to May 1, 1987 and again from Jan. 1, 1997 to Feb. 20, 2000. At the time of his death, Mr. Seal was serving his second term as election commissioner. he was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Velma Ainsworth Seal, Crossroads; a son, Michael J. Seal, Red Bud, IL; one granddaughter, Brandy Seal, New Orleans, and one sister, Norma Simmons, Bogalusa. Active pallbearers were Newell Bush, Horace Wheat, Jody Peterson, Monroe Bilbo, Harry Garett and James Barnes. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Crossroads Fire Department, members of the Pearl River county election commissioners and his many friends. ----------------------------------------------------- MARCH 6, 2000 ----------------------------------------------------- FRANKIE B. BENNETT Died March 3, 2000 BOGALUSA - The funeral service for Frankie B. Bennett, 81, a native and lifelong resident of Bogalusa, was held at 2 p.m. yesterday in Brown-McGehee Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Billy Galloway and the Rev. Bennett Mullins Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Ben's Ford Church Cemetery. Visitation was from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, with Masonic rites at 8 p.m. Visitation continued after 8 a.m. yesterday until service time. Mr. Bennett died Friday at Northeast Medical Center in Houston, TX. A member and former deacon of Ben's Ford Missionary Baptist Church and a former member and deacon of Antioch Baptist Church, he was also a member of Center Lodge No. 244, F&AM, a veteran of the United States Army with service during World War II in the South Pacific theater and was a 42-year employee of Gaylord Container Corp. until his retirement in 1980. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Wells Bennett, and a son, Billy W. Bennett. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Norma Jean Lee and Jack Lee of Humble, TX; two son and a daughter-in-law, Dana F. Bennett, Bogalusa and Donald Ray Bennett and Elsie Bennett, Humble , TX; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs. Verna Gibbs, Franklinton, Mrs. Norma Roseberry and Mrs. Dorothy Smith, both residents of Hattiesburg. BEATRICE MIZELL MANNING Died March 5, 2000 FRANKLINTON - Beatrice Mizell Manning, age 91, a resident of Isabel, died at 12:20 p.m. yesterday in Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Franklinton. A member of Isabel Baptist Church, she is survived by two sons, Buford Mizell of the Springhill Community and Arlin Mizell of Isabel; a daughter, Joann Mizell of Isabel; a sister, Irma Mizell of Bogalusa; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Willie G. Mizell, second husband, Charlie G. Manning; her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. George H. His grandmother, Rebecca Thomas, who raised he and his sister Kathy since 1954, preceded him in death. He is survived by a son, Christopher Calvin Knight of State Line; a sister, Kathy Stover of Franklinton; a niece, April Stover; a niece, Nathan Stover; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Carlos and Eva Thomas Knight; an infant daughter, Tyronna Lynn Knight; his grandfather, Lucious Thomas; and grandparents, Norman and Candace Knight. A graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, she taught third grade at Franklinton Elementary School and also worked as a substitute teacher for many years in the Bogalusa City School System. A member of the Stoney Point Missionary Baptist Church and the widow of Doyle Bond, she is survived by a daughter, Faye Ruth Williams of Modesto, CA; two grandchildren, Scott Williams and Amber Williams, both of Modesto; a brother, J. L. Cox of Baton Rouge; numerous nieces and nephews. JO KERBOW Died March 5, 2000 FRANKLINTON - Jo Kerbow, age 52, of Fort Walton Beach, FL, died Sunday. Born June 22, 1947 in Lake Charles, she attended Louisiana Tech University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1969, followed by a Bachelor of Arts degree in teaching in 1971. On May 21, 1976, she married Steve Lamar Kerbow and one week later they began their life in the United States Air Force. Jo truly enjoyed being an Air Force wife and made the saying "home is any place the Air Force sends you" a reality for her family, who she cherished most. She shared many happy times living around the world until 1993 when Steve was assigned from Incirlik, Air Force Base, Turkey to Hurlburt Field, Florida, where he retired in 1996. She was a devoted wife through 24 years of marriage and a loving mother to her three children, Aimee Meredith Kerbow, age 22, Shane Lamar Kerbow, age 19 and Scott Allen Kerbow, age 17. A talented artist, Jo took weekly painting classes where her love for the beaches and Northwest Florida were reflected in her art work. She is also survived by her father and mother, Guy and Josie Carroll; a sister, Suzanne McCarter and husband, Greg; her brothers, Danny and wife, India, and Dale and wife Claire, all of Ruston, LA. His desire was giving and helping others. On Jan. 2, he recommitted his life to Jesus Christ and joined Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church in Houston. Sumrall, 72, died of cancer yesterday at Metropolitan Hospice. A native of Natalbany, he had lived in Metairie for the past 54 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Munholland United Methodist Church. Mr. Sumrall was well known in the Washington Parish area for his work as a Shriner with Jerusalem Temple, particularly with helping crippled children through promoting the Shriner's Hospital in Shreveport, where he served on the hospital board. Lancy Davis will officiate, with interment in the Ponemah Cemetery. ----------------------------------------------------- MARCH 30, 2000 ----------------------------------------------------- ROBERT WALTER JOHNSON Died March 27, 2000 FRANKLINTON - Funeral arrangements have been completed for former Washington Parish High School Principal Robert Walter Johnson, age 92, who died Monday at his home in Franklinton. He was born Feb. 17, 1908 and had been a resident of Franklinton since 1932. The son of a minister, he became affiliated with the church at an early age. He had been a member of the Winan United Methodist Church for some 68 years. For many of those years, he served as treasurer and a member of the administrative board. He was also a member of Eureka Lodge, No. 27, Franklinton. He received his undergraduate degree from Southern University, Baton Rouge, and his graduate degree from Atlanta University, Atlanta, GA. As a young man, he received fame throughout the state of Louisiana and surrounding areas for his baseball talent and was proud to say that he pitched against the great Satchel Page. Called "Dick" by most who knew him, he enjoyed a successful career as principal of Washington Parish High School, which was accredited by the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges under his leadership. The school was closed in 1969 because of school integration. In December, 1996, the auditorium, which was part of Washington Parish High's physical facility, was renamed the Robert W. Johnson Auditorium in his honor. He leaves to mourn: his devoted wife, Willie Mae Johnson; a daughter, Tracy Johnson Mosley of Los Angeles, CA; a grandson, Brock Mosley; a nephew and his wife, Eric and Stephanie Jenkins, and their three children, Jabil, Robbie and Evan, all of Franklinton. J. "Jerry" Hill, 67, died Tuesday in Baton Rouge of complications from cancer treatment. A Bogalusa native and graduate of Bogalusa High School, he was also a graduate of Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, where he was a member of the ROTC and Scabbard and Blade. He served for two years at Lieutenant in the U. S. Army and later resided in Baton Rouge with a career with the U. S. Postal Service, from which he retired in 1992. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and until his recent illness was active in the choir. He and his wife also were members of the LSU Track and Field Association. He is survived by his wife, Rowena Hains Hill; seven daughters, and five sons-in-law, Diane and Robert Leche, Eileen and Alfred Parson, Monica and Lenny Doucet, Brenda Rose Hill, Jennifer and David Boudreaux, Laura and Ronald Davis Jr. and Rebecca E. Hill.
