Visitation is being held at Lewiston Baptist Church from 10 am. today until time for the religious service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Leon Carpenter and Rev. Clint Miller officiating. Interment will follow in the Lewiston Cemetery in Lewiston, LA. Mrs. Stafford was preceded in death by her husband, Wendel H. Lewis; one grandson, Joey Lewis; her parents, Sid and Ione Stafford; one sister, Marie Kemp; and two brothers, Hoyt and Dalton Stafford. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Willie Lewis of Franklinton and Ted and Barbara Lewis of Kentwood; three grandchildren, Vandy Lewis of Franklinton, Cindy Norris of Franklinton, and Brian Lewis Jr. of Austin, TX; six great-grandchildren, Misty and Riki Lewis of Mt. Hermon, Taylor and Cynthia Schilling of Franklinton, Cody Lewis of Atlanta and Casseye Jo Norris of Franklinton; two sisters, Natalie McDaniel and Clara Leonard, both of Kentwood; a cousin and dear friend, Colleen "Tot" Magee of Franklinton; numerous nieces and nephews. Ronald Burris "Ronny" Simmons (died April 30, 2000) FRANKLINTON - Ronald Burris "Ronnie" Simmons, age 68, died yesterday in Ochsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans. He was born in Magnolia, MS., and moved to Franklinton in 1940. He was a successful merchant - third generation of merchants on both sides of his family. His grandfather was one of the first members of Board of Directors of what was the Washington Bank and Trust Company. Mr. Simmons then became a member on the board of directors for the Washington Bank and Trust Company in 1981, and then a member of the Hancock Bank of Louisiana board of directors. As a member of the armed services, he was stationed at Fort Leslie J McNair in Washington, D. C. with the U.S. Army. He earned a BA degree from SLU and worked a year at LSU toward a master's degree. While at SLU, he received the Gertie Mims Award from the school of business and was listed in "Who's Who in Colleges and Universities". He took over Simmon's Department Store in 1955 and added the Squire Shop in 1970. The Fashionette was opened in 1962 and the Double-S Western Wear in 1980. He was co-chairman of Franklinton Centennial, past president of Franklinton Chamber of Commerce and a past member of Lions Club. A longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church, he served on the church administration board and was a member of the chancel choir. He is survived by his wife, Nan Pierson Simmons; two sons, Ronald Jr. and Russell Allen Simmons, both of Franklinton; one daughter, Vanda Victoria Simmons Upton of Whitehouse Station, NJ; a brother, Hyman Ottis Simmons Jr. of Kentwood; a daughter-in-law, Monica Simmons; son-in-law, Rann Upton and five grandchildren, Adam and Tusker Simmons, Victoria and Laurel Upton, Hannah Simmons and many cousins. Visitation will be held today at Crain Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Visitation will continue tomorrow at Centenary United Methodist Church after 9 a.m. The funeral service will be tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at the church with the Rev. May 2, 2000 Charles Alton Smith Jr. (died May 1, 2000) BOGALUSA - Charles Alton Smith Jr., 74, a resident of Bogalusa, died Monday in the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Biloxi, MS. He is survived by his wife, Irene M. Smith of Bogalusa; a daughter, Susan S. Wheat of Bogalusa; a son, Charles M. Smith of Georgetown, TX; a sister, Grace Hochanessey of Gretna; a brother, J. T. Smith of Prairieville; two grandchildren, Liz Dunaway and Tate Roach, both residents of Bogalusa. Bob Belknap will officiate, with interment following in Ponemah Cemetery. May 3, 2000 Stephon T. Crain (died May 1, 2000) FRANKLINTON - Funeral arrangement have been completed for Stephon T. Crain, 33, who died Monday in Oschsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans. He was a member of Sweet Home Church of Christ Holiness, USA, where he served as a member of the trustee board. Stephon was a man of many accomplishments which include, president and general manager of Crain and Sons Investments and Amusements Incorporated; president-elect of the Association of Funeral Directors and Embalmers of the State of Louisiana; a member of the National Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association; a member of the Washington Parish Chamber of Commerce; and the Zoning Committee for the town of Franklinton. One of his proudest accomplishments was successfully preparing the grant for the Washington Parish Cattle Association which resulted in member acquiring cattle from the Federal Government. He leave to celebrate his life a loving wife, Ellen Doretha B. May 4, 2000 Emma Dykes Rogers (died May 3, 2000) FRANKLINTON - Emma Dykes Rogers, age 79, a resident of Franklinton, died at 8:30 a.m. yesterday in Riverside Medical Center. She was a retired lunchroom employee with the Washington Parish School System, having served at Pine High School for many years. She was a member of the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church and the widow of Buford S. Rogers. She is survived by two sons, Richard V. Rogers and Willie F. Mrs. Scianna died May 5, 2000 at her residence. The owner and operator of Quick Shop on Columbia Street for 48 years, Mrs. Scianna was employed for 12 years at the box factory at Gaylord's. She was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church, the Italian American Club and the Kaycettes, the women's auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie J. Scianna; a son, Frank J. Scianna; her parents, Joe Messina and Lucy Messina; two sisters, Lena Messina Saba and Annie Messina Ryan, and three brothers, Louis Messina, Emile Messina and Vincent Messina. A retired marine mechanic, he is survived by his wife, Charlotte Ramirez Danos; a son, John Danos; his mother, Viola Danos; three brother, Ronald Danos, Kurt Danos and Gary Danos, all of Franklinton; two stepsons, Robert Cox and Charles Cox of Metairie; four grandchildren; and his former wife, Mary Ann Danos. Visitation will be held tomorrow from 9 a.m. until time for the service. burial will be in Seal Cemetery, Varnado. She was born in 1916 in Sumrall, MS to Henry T. and Ira Whittington Parker. She was preceded in death in 1969 by her husband of 35 years, John Luther Blake. He grew up in Varnado and they and their children lived in Varnado during the years of 1946-48. In addition to caring for her husband and children, she pursued a career in real estate sales and several hobbies, including painting, gardening and raising birds, especially parrots In her later years, she was also active in her local TOPS club. she is survived by her children, Marian B. Rowe, of Wendall, Idaho, John L. Blake II, of Vancouver, Wash., Shirley B. Sell of Wooster, Ohio; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillian Hayer, all of California. In her husband's family, Florence Blake and Rutheline Blake of Varnado, Louis Williams of Bogalusa, Mary Francis of Silsbee, Texas, and Griffin Blake of California survive. Annie Mitchell North (died May 5, 2000) BOGALUSA - Mrs. Annie Mitchell North, 88, a longtime teacher at schools in Washington , St. Mary and Jefferson Parishes and a resident of Louisiana for 87 years, died Friday, May 5 in a nursing home in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. Mrs. North, who also owned a flower shop in New Orleans for 10 years, taught in Louisiana school systems for 30 years. She was a member of Superior Avenue Baptist Church in Bogalusa and also held membership in the Louisiana Horticulture Society and the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association. She moved to Florida a little over a year ago. Mrs. North was preceded in death by her husband, Kendall Edward North, her parents, James Harvey Mitchell and Winnie Pope Mitchell Crain, and a sister, Mrs. J. M. Sticker. May 25, 2000 Monroe Blackburn (died May 18, 2000) FRANKLINTON - The funeral service for Monroe Blackburn, 73, was held Thursday at Bethel Church of Christ Holiness with Elder Raymond Dyson officiating. Interment was in Bethel Cemetery. Visitation was Monday at Crain and Sons Funeral Home of Franklinton from 6 until 9 p.m., with a family hour from 7 to 8 p.m. A resident of 25123 Bell Crawford Road, Franklinton, he died last Thursday in the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Orleans. A native of Mt. Hermon, he was a member of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II, the enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served for nine years. There he received the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal and the United Nation Service Medal. After his discharge, he served as chaplain at the local Disable American Veterans Chapter 32. He was a member of Bethel Church of Christ Holiness, U.S.A., where he served in several capacities: Usher Board, Deacon Board chairman, choir member, Sunday School teacher, and church treasurer. He also held several regional offices in the Southwestern Dioceses of the church of Christ Holiness. These offices include: treasurer Southwestern Diocese, secretary/treasurer Southwestern Diocese Mission Board, secretary/treasurer Southwestern Diocese Bishop Sustaining Fund, and president of District No. 3 Convention Choir. Survivors include his wife, Lillian Blackburn of Franklinton; a son and daughter-in-law, LeDerick (Joslyn) Blackburn of New Orleans; four brother, Norman Blackburn of Mt. Hermon, Norvel Blackburn of Baton Rouge, Leroy Blackburn of Madisonville, and Willie Lee Blackburn of New Orleans; one sister, Charlene Buckley of New Orleans; grandchild Kristen Blackburn of New Orleans; one sister-in-law, Quillie Warren of Washington, DC and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Margarette Elizabeth Freeman (died May 24, 2000) BOGALUSA - Mrs. Margarette Elizabeth Freeman died yesterday at her residence at the age of 68 years. She was a native of Washington parish and a resident of Varnado. Mrs. Freeman was a member of Varnado United Methodist Church and was recently honored for outstanding service for organizing Easter Sunrise Service for over 20 years. She was also the manager of the Varnado High School cafeteria for over 16 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willmon Freeman, Sr; her parents Carl and Gladys Fornea; a son, James Edward Freeman; and a brother, Gene Fornea. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Willmon (Dale) Freeman, Jr., Tommy Carl (Sarah) Freeman, Sr. and Donald (Phyllis) Starks all of Bogalusa, Russell Wayne (Carolyn) Freeman of Angie; a brother and sister- in-law, Carl (Patsy) Fornea II; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice (Billy Ray, Sr.) Freeman, Jesse Merle (George, Sr.) Jones and Bertha (Ben, Sr.) Hartzog. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Rodgers (died May 22, 2000) BOGALUSA - Talbert George "T.G." Rodgers of 1931 Dewitt Place, Bogalusa died Monday in the Veteran Administration Hospital, Biloxi, at the age of 68. After high school he joined the U.S. Air Force, making a career of it. He traveled the world - Greece, Paris, Germany, Japan and many other places overseas and in the United States. He retired as a Staff Sergeant. Survivors include three sister, Vallerie (Harold) Whitaker, Rebecca (Tate) Ferrell of Bogalusa and rose (Harold) Anderson of Decatur, GA; three brother, Donald Ray Rodgers Sr. of Bogalusa, Clarence Rodgers and Leroy Rodgers of Milwaukee, WI and a host of nieces nephews, other relatives and friends. May 26, 2000 Percy Wayne Wheat (died May 24, 2000) BOGALUSA - Percy Wayne Wheat, 60, died Wednesday at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, OK. He was a native of Bogalusa and resident of Stillwater, OK for the past 12 years, a member of First Baptist Church of Stillwater; he was a graduate of Bogalusa High School and of Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Alabama in 1970. He was the beloved husband of Randa Moscovitz Wheat of Stillwater; father of Melanie Wheat of Dallas, TX, Leslie Wheat Grubbs of Lawrenceville, GA; grandfather of Jacob Springer, Ethan Springer, Adam Springer and Madison Grubbs; son of Verna Ray Wheat of Bogalusa; brother of Peggy Wheat Cochran of Houston, TX. Also survived by a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Percy L. Wheat who served as a Southern Baptist minister in several churches including Westside Emmanuel Baptist Church in Bogalusa. Crain, 89, a resident of Pine, died yesterday in Riverside Medical Center. He was a member of Pine Missionary Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a 50-year member of Pine Lodge No. 264, F&AM and also a member of Royal Arch, Palestine Commandery No. 23 and Jerusalem Temple Shrine.
