LOUIS, MS - Billy Ray Rester Jr., 37, a former Bogalusa resident and retired Bogalusa fireman, died about 4:30 a.m. today at his home in Bay St. Louis. Alphonse Manning (Died October 29, 2001) BOGALUSA - Alphonse Manning Sr., 82, of Bogalusa died Monday, October 29 in Mercy Memorial Hospital in New Orleans after a brief illness. He is a former resident of Ruth, MS. He was born June 21, 1919 in Ruth, MS. He was a retired custodian for the Bogalusa School System. He moved to Bogalusa in 1967 and was a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church. He was also an usher and mason. He is survived by five daughters, Alice O. Smith (Walter) of Chicago, IL, Ester Williams of Harvey, IL, Judy Pearson of Ruth, MS, Janice Carr (Warren) of Houma, LA, Emma Jean Ambrose (Jimmy) of New Orleans; a devoted friend, Eloise Brown of Bogalusa; two step-children, Gilda and Ralph Smith of Bogalusa; and three step-grandchildren. Harvey Ball (Died October 30, 2001) BOGALUSA - Harvey Ball, 92, a resident of Bogalusa and native of Tylertown, MS., died October 30 at Bogalusa Community Medical Center. He is survived by 10 children; 40 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen G. Louis Brown will officiate. Interment will follow in Bogalusa Cemetery. Robert E. "Bobby" Magee (Died November 2, 2001) FRANKLINTON - Robert E. "Bobby" Magee, 75, a native and life-long resident of Franklinton died last Friday at Riverside Medical Center. Magee was an automobile dealer in Franklinton for more then 30 years. He was active in civic affairs at the state, parish and city level. He was a member and former president of the Franklinton Chamber of Commerce and the Franklinton Lions Club, a member and former Past Master of the Franklinton Masonic Lodge, a former member and president of the Franklinton Recreation Association and a member and former president of the Franklinton Area Economic Development Foundation. He was a charter member of the Zachary Taylor Parkway Commission, former director and Chairman of the Board for Washington Bank and Trust Company and a founder and former member of the Board of Trustees of Bowling Green School. He was active for many years in the Washington Parish Fair Association, serving as stage and parade chairman. Magee was a charter member, deacon and former Chairman of Deacons at Hillcrest Baptist Church. Preceding her in death was her husband, Clyde S. Sutton. Vernon Quintin Carr (Died November 3, 2001) BOGALUSA - Vernon Quinton Carr, 69, a resident of Bogalusa died Saturday at his home. He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church, The American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the 4TH Degree. He was employed at U.S. Post Office in Covington since 1969 He is survived by his wife, Claudia Adams Carr; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth " Libby" Carr Mitchell and Lester Mitchell; a son, John Adams Carr, all of Bogalusa; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Rita Ann Carr Regitz of Houston, TX and Claudia and Ara Arman of Baton Rouge; two grandchildren, Zachary Joseph Mitchell and Jacob Quintin Mitchell both of Bogalusa; and numerous nieces and nephews. Interment will follow in Ponemah Cemetery. Bernice S. Cooper (Died November 1, 2001) RICHLAND, WA - Bernice S. Cooper, 89, a resident of Richland, WA died last Thursday in Kadlec Hospital. For the past year, she had been a resident of the Life Care Center of Richland. For 10 years prior to that, she had resided in Kennewich, WA. She was born on June 22, 1912 in Chicago, IL. She later attended high school in Kansas City. She had a career as a dancer, including performing in Broadway shows in New York City, where she used the stage name of Bernice Stone. During the Second World War, she took on clerical and supervisory duties for a construction company. It was during the construction of Keelser Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS, that she met the man who was to become her husband. For the remaining years of her life, she was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James Jr. and Jane of Benton City, WA. She was preceded in death last year by her husband of 52 years, James. Services will be held at some later time with interment with her late husband in Bogalusa. Hermon died Saturday after a courageous battle with a prolonged illness, this kind and gently lady went to be with our Lord at 5:45 p.m. in her home. Her dedication to her work and family will leave a strong legacy for years to come. The pride she had in herself and the power to overcome will be cherished and treasured by all who knew her. Morris, a resident of Bogalusa, died yesterday at Bogalusa Community Medical Center. During WWII, he was in the Reserve Advanced Ordinance ROTC at Louisiana State University when he was called to active duty in April 1943. He was sent to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, MD, for basic training and OCS. He was shipped to Italy in September 1944, and was assigned to Co. F, 337 Regiment of the 85th Infantry Division. He fought in three campaigns: Rome-Arne, Po Valley and Northern Appenaines. He earned the Cross Rifles, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. When the German troops surrendered, he was transferred to the ordinance in the Army occupation of Italy until he was discharged in January 1946. A graduate of LSU, he was a supervisor in the Bogalusa City School System and was active in the community. Morris was a member of First Baptist Church. When Crown Zellerbach relinquished management of the Washington Parish Free Fair to the community, Morris was the first executive vice-president. His activities included the Krewe of MCCA, Bogalusa Community Medical Center board, YMCA board of directors and the Washington Parish Library Board. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Jean Morris; and a daughter, Pamela Aline Morris. Survivors include his daughter, Bernadette Morris of Baton Rouge; and a sister, Hazel Olsen. The pallbearers will be Tommie, Nathan, Herbert and Keaton Bush, and Christopher and Adam Perry. She attended Bogalusa High School and continued her education at Soole Business College. She retired after 30 years of secretarial work in New Orleans. She was a member of First Baptist Church. He was born in Bogalusa on Sept. 3, 1949, served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam conflict, and lived his entire life in the Bogalusa area. Survivors include his mother, Charlene Roach; two sisters, Theresa Bates, both of Bogalusa, and Victoria Rall of New Hampshire; two brothers, Ricky Roach of Sun and Mickey Roach of Bogalusa; two sons, Edward Whitney and Duane Whitney, both of Bogalusa; a daughter, Melissa Miller of St. Louis, MO; one foster brother, Raymond Cameron of Bogalusa; a very devoted friend, Dana Nation of Bogalusa; and three grandchildren.
