BOGALUSA DAILY NEWS OBITUARIES - Washington Parish, LA RICHARD HEZEKIAH SMITH Died October 17, 1999 NEW ORLEANS - The funeral service for Richard Hezekiah Smith, age 70, was held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20 in Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, New Orleans. He died Oct. 17 in Tulane University Medical Center. The Rev. Fred Luter officiated at the final service, with interment following in Restlawn Park and Mausoleum in Avondale. The son of the late John W. B. and Lena E. Stamps Smith, he was born Oct. 1, 1929 in Bogalusa. He was christened at Salter Chapel AME Church in Bogalusa by dutiful god-parents, Robert and Mary Bell. In December, 1997, he was baptized at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church where he served faithfully until his death. He graduated from Central Memorial High School in Bogalusa and attended Southern University in Baton Rouge and Dillard University. He was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Carrie Stewart Smith; a daughter, Joan Smith Bridges (Ralph Sr.); a stepson, Michael J. Stewart (Angela); grandchildren: Ralph Jr. and Reinye Bridges, Brandi, Chris and Daron Stewart; sisters, Gladys S. Robertson of Bogalusa, Charlene S. Gaffney (Blaine) of Gaffney, SC; a brother, Benjamin Smith (Katherine) of Bogalusa; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Willie, James and John Smith, and four sisters, Doris, Ruth, Inez and Pearl. IEVER CYRUS MOORE Died October 18, 1999 (Photograph) CHAMPAIGN, ILL. - A funeral service was held October 24, in Champaign, Ill. for Iever Cyrus Moore, a former Bogalusan, who died October 18. The final service was held at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She was the daughter of James and Clara Oneal Cyrus, who preceded her in death. From early childhood, she was raised by her father and his wife of 55 years, Ruby Bias Cyrus, who survives her. She married Hilary Moore on May 4, 1963 in Champaign, and he died May 19, 1988. Her faith in God provided the guidance and strength she needed throughout her life. She worked for the University of Illinois for 35 years and at the time of her retirement, she was a food service manager. She was a faithful member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she served as president of the Mothers and Deaconess boards, was a member of the choir and the Women's Fellowship, chairperson of the gourmet committee and active in Sunday School and the mission work of the church. Her faith became stronger during her illness. She is survived by a son, Michael J. (Phyllis) Moore of Hermitage, Tenn.; a brother, the Rev. James D. (Bessie) Cyrus of Bogalusa; four sisters, Artice (Robert) Sibley of Champaign, Blondine Robertson of Oakland, CA, Oreda Dickerson of Rahway, N.J., and Joan (Ray) Walker of Riverside, Calif.; two grandchildren Matrice Moore (Lamont) Carr of Madison, Tenn. and Michael B. Moore of Nashville; and five great-grandchildren, LaToya Moore, Keenan Carr, Kalil Carr, Michol Moore, Michael Moore; five nephews and 11 nieces. CHARLES J. MAYEUX Died October 25, 1999 ATLANTA, GA - Charles J. Mayeux, age 84, a resident of Atlanta and a former resident of Bogalusa, died Oct. 25. Mr. Mayeux had two successful careers; the first as a plant engineer in four paper mills in Louisiana, Oregon and California and a second as a realtor/broker in Florida. He loved his family and is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Vivian Johnson Mayeux. They were high school sweethearts in Marksville, LA. Other survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and David McGill of Chamblee; his grandchildren, Michael McGill and Gayle Demarest of Atlanta and Meghan Root of San Clemente, CA; his great-grandchildren, Prosper, Micheala, Grace, Dylan, Cory and Jack; and his brothers, Bill and Marvin Mayeux of Bowling Green, OH and San Diego, CA. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gayle Mayeux. He had a multitude of hobbies during his life, including barbershop harmony, investing and golf. He was blessed with a wonderful life and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.The remains have been cremated. A native of Angie, she was born March 20, 1949. She was a 1967 graduate of Varnado High School, received her BS from Loyola University and her MS from the University of Southern Mississippi. She is survived by three daughters, Myrtis Statham of Bogalusa, Alice Hall of Salinas, CA and Ruby Gaude' of Mandeville; a son, Eric Acosta of Covington; a sister, Rose Young of Diamondhead, MS; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eric Acosta, and a daughter, Judy Statham Pennington. IRENE "NANA" ACOSTA Died November 4, 1999 BOGALUSA - Funeral services for Irene "Nana" Acosta, 102, a resident of Bogalusa, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Bogalusa with Father Lawrence J. Phelps, OSB, officiating. Visitation was held Friday from 6-9 p.m. at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home, continuing Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial followed in Ponemah Cemetery, Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home directing. Mrs. Acosta died Nov. 4, 1999 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Mandeville, La. "Bobby" Davis, age 64, a resident of Bogalusa, died yesterday in Riverside Medical Center, Franklinton. A U. S. Navy veteran, he was a member of the American Legion and a retired mechanic. He is survived by his wife, Betty M. Mr. Stringfield died Nov. 5, 1999 at the Riverside Medical Center. A retired truck driver, Mr. Stringfield was employed for many years with Southern Truck Lines of Franklinton and DSI Trucking of Baton Rouge. He was a member of Harmony Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Eula Owens Varnado, a brother, Billy Varnado, and a sister, Wanzie Wood. LUVELL HARTZOG WOODWARD Died November 5, 1999 ANGIE - Luvell Hartzog Woodward, age 85, died today at her residence in Angie. She is survived by a son, Robert S. Woodward, of Franklinton; five daughters, Christine Woodward of Reserve, Elvia Taylor of Angie, Sylvia Phelps of Foxworth, Evaline Rowell of Tylertown, and Flora Mae Thompson of Bogalusa; a brother, James Hartzog of Angie; 23 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. MARGARET GRANTHAM RICHARDSON Died November 6, 1999 BUSH - Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Grantham Richardson, 70, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday from the Brown McGehee Funeral Home chapel with the Revs. Tim Meadows and J. T. Wright officiating. Visitation will be held today from 6-8 p.m. and continue after 8 a.m. Monday until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Hebron Baptist Church cemetery in Bush, Brown McGehee Funeral Home directing. Mrs. Richardson died Nov. 6, 1999 after a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Richardson was born in Camden, Ark. but lived for many years in Brewton, Ala. where she worked as dietician at both the elementary and middle schools. She later worked as a secretary for the United States Forest Service. In Brewton, Mrs. Richardson was an active member of North Brewton Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir, serving as both pianist and organist. Later Mrs. Richardson and her husband, Bill Richardson, retired to Bush where she became active in Hebron Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter and a son-in- law Sara and Frank Kleinschrodt; two sons, Gary Richardson and Stan Richardson; a daughter-in-law, Kathia Richardson; grandchildren John Richardson, Jenny Resmondo, George Richardson, Richard Richardson, Anne Kleinschrodt and Karl Kleinschrodt; her mother, Fanny Grantham; two sisters, Joyce Campbell and Jacqueline Grantham; a brother and sister- in-law, Louis and Rusty Grantham; and her pride and joy, great- grandchild Allison Margaret Richardson. Mrs. Wiley died Nov. 6, 1999 at the home of her daughter in Bogalusa. She was born Nov. 10, 1931 to Denver Richardson and Norva Bigelow Richardson Eatherly. Mrs. Wiley was a resident of Mobile, Ala. for more than 30 years and was retired from the Mobile County Commission. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Virginia Richardson Fortenberry. CAMMIE JOYCE McDANIEL Died November 7, 1999 BOGALUSA - Cammie Joyce McDaniel, age 72, a resident of Bogalusa, died yesterday at 11:55 p.m. in the Bogalusa Community Medical Center. She is survived by three sisters, Sydney P. Hughes of Bogalusa, Gloria McKenzie of Baton Rouge and Glenda Stringfield of Pearl River. RUFUS WEBB BREEDEN Died November 24, 1999 GREENSBURG - Rufus Webb Breeden, age 88 and a resident of Greenburg who lived in Franklinton for many years, died at 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday at the St. Helena Parish Hospital in Greensburg. The McKneely Funeral Home in Kentwood is in charge of arrangements. Breeden was a soil conservation service engineer. He graduated from Oakwood High School, one of seven members in the class of four boys and three girls. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps beginning in 1933. He served as a Corporal in the U. S. Army, 361st Engineer Special Service Regiment during WWII. After the war, he joined the Soil Conservation Service where he served Washington Parish for 35 years until his retirement in 1973. He was a true sportsman, avid fisherman, dedicated hunter, and an environmentalist with a great love of the outdoors, trees and nature. He was a devoted LSU Tiger fan who began attending games in the early 1920s. He drew a tremendous amount of strength from these red clay St. Helena hills, from his many friends, and the Christian love he received from Day's United Methodist Church for 88 years. Above all else, he loved all five of his girls. He will be greatly missed by the many lives he touched. Breeden is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Kaye B.
