Kemp, Jr., 64, a native of Franklinton and a resident of Baton Rouge, died at 11:35 a.m. Friday, July 5th, at his home in Baton Rouge. He was an employee of the Louisiana Department of Revenue; a former employee of the Furlow-Laughlin Equipment Company with more than 20 years of service; a veteran of the U. S. Navy during World War II; a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the East Gate Lodge No. 452, F&AM; and was an ordained Baptist deacon and a member of the Florida Boulevard Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Muriel Cutrer Kemp of Baton Rouge; three sons, Greg Kemp of Hammond, Stephen Kemp and Timothy N. Kemp, both of Baton Rouge; a brother, Woodrow Kemp of Baton Rouge; and four grandchildren, Amy Elizabeth Kemp of Hammond, and Phillip Kemp, Bradford Kemp, and David T. Kemp, all of Baton Rouge. He was preceded in death by his father, Owen S. Kemp, Sr., and his mother, Lucy Alford Kemp. The body lay in state at the Rabenhorst Funeral Home East in Baton Rouge until the time for services. Masonic rites were conducted at the funeral home Sunday, July 7th, at 7 p.m. Religious services were conducted at the funeral home Monday, July 8th, at 12 noon with the Rev. W. Harold Anderson and the Rev. Jerry F. Poston officiating. Interment was in the Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Vivian R. "Sarge" Varnado July 4, 1985 BOGALUSA - Vivian R. "Sarge" Varnado, 81, a native of Tangipahoa and a resident of Jackson, Louisiana, died at 11 p.m. Thursday, July 4th, at the Lane Memorial Hospital in Zachary. He was a retired Ethyl Corporation employee and a U. S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Artie Sylvest Varnado of Jackson; a sister-in-law, Helen S. Varnado of Lake Charles; an uncle, Jule Varnado of Hemet, California; and a cousin, Maxine Tillery of Baton Rouge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Florence Varnado; and by a brother, Cody Varnado. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson. The body lay in state at the Rabenhorst Funeral Home East in Baton Rouge until the time for funeral services, which were conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 6th, with Dr. Joe Nesom officiating. She is survived by five sons, Kelly Burkhalter of Portland, Oregon, Lindsey Burkhalter of Amarillo, Texas, David Burkhalter of Baltimore, Maryland, and Jesse Burkhalter and Edward Burkhalter of New Orleans; four daughters, Ola Magee of Franklinton, Delores Burkhalter of New Orleans, and Kathy and Tammy Burkhalter of Mt. Hermon; five step-sons, Weston Burkhalter of Kentwood, Willie Leo Burkhalter of Las Angeles, Leroy Burkhalter of Franklinton, Curtis Burkhalter of Wilmer, Louisiana, and Allen Burkhalter of Mt. Hermon, died at 1:30 a.m. Monday, July 8th, at the Riverside Medical Center. He was a member of the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church and was a retired custodian of the Mt. Hermon School. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Carl (Alberta) Miller of Spring Creek; three sons, Billy Gill of Mt. Hermon, Paul Gill of Las Vegas, Nevada, and John Gill of Mt. Vernon, Alabama; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Magee July 6, 1985 BOGALUSA - Mrs. Millie A. Magee, 91, a resident of 13th Avenue, Franklinton, died Saturday morning, July 6th, at the Rest Haven Nursing Home in Bogalusa. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elvena Bickham and Mrs. Eva Kohla, both of Franklinton; a stepson, Elbert Magee Dillon of Baton Rouge; five granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren. Bateman, 84, a native of Franklinton and a resident of Baton Rouge, died at 9:40 a.m. Sunday, July 14th, at St. James Place. A member of the University Baptist Church, he was a retired LSU Forestry Professor. He was an employee of the Crown-Zellerbach Box Factory, was a veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Lawrence Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Hoggatt July 23, 1985 BOGALUSA - Buford J. Hoggatt, 76, a native of Franklinton and a resident of Purvis, Mississippi, died Tuesday, July 23rd, at the Methodist Hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Selma M. Hoggatt of Purvis; a son, B. James Hoggatt, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia; two sisters, Mrs. Christine Springs of Denham Springs, and Mrs. Evelyn Thorn of Malibu, California; two brothers, Billy Hoggatt of Hilliard, Florida and J. M. Hoggatt of Lake City, Florida; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Melton William Millard "Billy" Bickham Mrs. Eunice Foil Burris Stanley E. Thigpen Kenneth J. McElroy Mrs. Joe O. (Mary Robinson) Poole July 31, 1985 BOGALUSA - Mrs. Joe O. (Mary Robinson) Poole, 70, a native of Magee, Mississippi, and a long-time resident of Franklinton, died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 31st, at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. She was publisher of The Era-Leader, Franklinton's only newspaper, and was the widow of Joseph Oliver "Joe" Poole. She was also preceded in death by a brother, the late Hugh George Robinson. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh G. Robinson of Magee, Mississippi, she was born June 5, 1915. Mrs. Poole met her husband-to-be at the Magee Courier Newspaper in Magee, Mississippi, where she was working when Mr. Poole was employed by the newspaper. They later married and moved to Franklinton in the fall of 1940. Nearly five years later, in May 1945, Mr. and Mrs. Poole purchased The Era-Leader. During the years that followed their move to Franklinton, Mrs. Poole was employed as an operator by the telephone company and later Mr. and Mrs. Poole collected for the telephone company. She also represented Warren's Florist of Bogalusa taking orders locally for that company. She had also been employed by the Simpson County, Mississippi, County Agent's Office in Mendenhall, Mississippi, where she was regarded as a valuable employee. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Poole continued to operate The Era-Leader until her death last week. A member of the Centenary United Methodist Church and the Vera Chester Circle of the church, she was also a charter member of the Home and Garden Club, the Franklinton Chamber of Commerce, the Louisiana Press Association, the Louisiana Forestry Association, and the Louisiana Public Affairs Research Council. She served as Secretary of the group which worked to get the Franklinton Swimming Pool. Mrs. Poole was regarded as very civic-minded and interested in the welfare of the public she served through her newspaper. Mrs. Poole is survived by three daughters, Mary Jo Poole and Mrs. Dan (Jane) Johnson, both of Franklinton, and Mrs. Robert (Judy) Edgar of Jackson, Mississippi; a brother. O. T. Robinson of Jackson; a sister, Juliette Robinson of Jackson; and four grandchildren, Lisa Johnson and Jeff Johnson of Franklinton, and Leigh Edgar and Robbie Edgar of Jackson. The body lay in state at the Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton until the time for funeral services, which were conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, August 1st, in the Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. A retired employee of the Louisiana Department of Highways, he was a member of the Acy's Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Terrell Melton of Acy's Creek; a son, Jewell D. Melton of Baton Rouge; four daughters, Mrs. Elton (Golda) Penton of Thomas, Mrs. Melvin (Helen) Branch of the Hilltop community, Mrs. Marcus (Bernice) Seals of Dexter, Mississippi, and Mrs. Steve (Joan) Radasky of Baton Rouge; three sisters, Mrs. Hoyt (Jessie Merle) Boyd of Lexie, Mrs. Gracie Williams of Walker, and Mrs. Linnie Milligan of Foxworth, Mississippi; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. A member of the Centenary United Methodist Church and the widow of W. Otto Burris of Franklinton, she was a long-time employee of the Washington Parish Assessor's Office. Following the death of her husband, who served as Parish Assessor, she completed his unexpired term from 1950 through 1952. She is survived by a son, Joseph H. Burris of Franklinton; a daughter, Mrs. Wilda B. Kilbourne of Clinton, Louisiana; a sister, Mrs. Ada F. Brumfield of Bogalusa; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Franklinton, he was also a member of the Franklinton Lodge Number 101, F&AM; past president of the Franklinton Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce; a former board member of the Washington Parish Fair Association; a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association Number 405; was influential in obtaining the Franklinton Airport; served on the Franklinton Town Council from 1968 through 1972; and was currently serving as a member of the board of directors of the Washington Parish Library. He served as assistant principal at Franklinton High School before becoming parish supervisor and then superintendent of the Parish School System from 1941 until his retirement in 1965. Magee was active in the Franklinton Lions Club, having served as president and as District Governor. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Franklinton and of the Zona Masonic Lodge Number 337. He was retires from the Southern Natural Gas Company after 38 years of service, was a veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Prentiss Presbyterian Church. He was currently serving his fourth term as Justice of the Peace of the Ninth Ward of Washington Parish, was Past President and an active member of the Franklinton Lions Club, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Louisiana Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation, and was a member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Linda Miller of Mt. Hermon; a daughter, Amy Lynn Miller of Mt. Hermon; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milford Miller of Mt. A member of the Bonner Creek Baptist Church, she was the widow of the late William Chancey Penton. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Lettie Penton Thomas. Hermon, died Thursday, November 14th, at the Beachem Memorial Hospital in Magnolia, Mississippi at 3:15 p.m. Holliday was a veteran of World War II who was upon his discharge from the U. S. Army decorated with five Battle Stars for his outstanding service in the European Theatre of the war. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Willie Holliday of Mt. He was a retired rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service in Franklinton having served for thirty-eight years. He was a member of the Louisiana Rural Carriers Association, a former teacher in the Washington Parish Schools, a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, a member of the Homer-Magee Post American Legion in Franklinton and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a former chairman and secretary of the Board of Deacons of the First Baptist Church in Franklinton and served for many years as a youth Sunday School teacher. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Aline Knight Smith of Franklinton; an aunt, Mrs. Zula V. Sylvest of Franklinton; several sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
