Athey, 77, a resident of 1718 Bene Street, Franklinton, died at 2 a.m. Tuesday, December 18th, at the Riverside Medical Center. He was a retired employee of the Town of Franklinton and was a member of the Grace Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Velma Holmes Athey of Franklinton; two sons, D. J. Athey and Floyd Athey, both of Franklinton; two daughters, Mrs. Willis (Minnie Belle) Barber and Mrs. Lavon (Delia) Galloway, both of Franklinton; two brothers Austin Athey of Covington and Earnest Athey of Folsom; three sisters, Mrs. J. J. (Lena) Sharp of Folsom, Mrs. Louise Haddox of Franklinton, and Mrs. Viola Rawls of Bogalusa; 22 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Schilling December 27, 1984 BOGALUSA - Silas N. Schilling, 82, a resident of the Mt. Pisgah community, died at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 27th, at the Riverside Medical Center in Franklinton. He was a dairyman and was a deacon of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lettie Mae Miller Schilling; five sons, Cilmon Schilling of Hammond, J. W. "Doc" Schilling, Donnie Schilling, Ronnie "Goat" Schilling, and Abner Schilling, all of Mt. Hermon; three daughters, Mrs. Juanita Corkern of Houston, Texas, Mrs. A. W. (Mamie) Burch of Mt. Hermon, and Mrs. Steve (Nell) Webb of Baton Rouge; 19 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. George Norman Seal December 22, 1984 BOGALUSA - George Norman Seal, 66, a resident of Route 3, Franklinton, died at 9 a.m. Saturday, December 22nd, at his residence. He was owner and operator of Seal Grocery, a retired electrician, and a veteran of World War II. He was a member and past member of the Franklinton Lodge Number 101, F&AM. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elois Williams Seal of Franklinton; a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Peggy) Turnage of Franklinton; two grandchildren, Miss Larissa Grace and Waylon Turnage, both of Franklinton; three brothers, Harry Seal of Franklinton, and Leroy Seal and Lorell Seal, both of Jackson, Louisiana; and two sisters, Mrs. Frankie Fortenberry of Tylertown, Mississippi, and Mrs. Nell Frazier of Jackson, Louisiana. January 9, 1985 Charles Raiford Montgomery Mrs. Henrietta Robinson McLendon Sonnie Seal George Jefferson Porter Charles Raiford Montgomery December 29, 1984 BOGALUSA - Charles Raiford Montgomery, 40, a resident of Route 9, Franklinton, died at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 29th, at the Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, of injuries received in a deer hunting accident earlier in the day. He was an associate professor of dairy nutrition at the Southeast Research Station, Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, Louisiana State University Agricultural Center in Franklinton, where he also served as Research Center Safety Officer. He was a member of the Board of Deacons of the Franklinton First Baptist Church, a member of the Board of Directors of the Bowling Green School, a member of the Washington Parish Fair Association, and served as president of the Richardson Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Erwin Montgomery of Franklinton; two daughters, Julie Montgomery and Jan Montgomery, both of Franklinton; and a sister, Mrs. Royce (Rachel) Thomas of Franklinton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raiford Montgomery. She is survived by her husband, W. F. McLendon, Sr. of Ponchatoula; two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Flora) Nelson of Mt. Hermon, and Mrs. Talmadge (Jane) Core of Folsom; two sons, W. F. McLendon, Jr. of Euless, Texas, and C. Hermon McLendon of Ponchatoula; two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Mason and Mrs. Myrtle Simoneaux, both of New Orleans; a brother, William Robinson of Abita Springs; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was a retired dairyman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Luby Seal. He is survived by a son, Sam Seal of Franklinton; a daughter, Mary Carlile of Baton Rouge; three brothers, P. V. Seal of Ohatchee, Alabama, Hubert Seal of Jackson, Louisiana, and Hammond A. Seal of Kentwood; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Galatas of Baton Rouge, Ruby Green of Covington, and Lutie Hennesy of Franklinton; three grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren. He was deacon emeritus of the Isabel Baptist Church, a retired teacher with the Washington Parish School System, a member of state and national retired teacher organizations, and a member of the Sun Masonic Lodge. He is survived by a son, Edward E. Porter of Long Beach, Mississippi; three daughters, Mrs. Kathleen P. Voth of New Orleans, Mrs. Homer (Janice) Luster of Sheridan, and Mrs. Joyce Hunt of Bogalusa; two brothers, Alton Porter of Alexandria and J. W. Miller, she was a member of the Zoar Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann Pitzen of Toledo, Ohio; three sons, Lester Miller of Baton Rouge, Kenneth Miller of Natchez, and Lynn Miller of New York, New York; three sisters, Claudie Alford of Franklinton, Audrey Pattie of Magnolia, and Nannie Mae Hinote of Vidor, Texas; a brother, Bobby McElveen of Franklinton; 11 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. William Henry Knight January 9, 1985 BOGALUSA - Pine native, William Henry Knight, 82, a resident of New Orleans, died Wednesday, January 9th, at 10:10 p.m. in New Orleans. He was the son of the late Edward Knight and the late Nancy Crain of Pine. Survivors are his wife, Maudest Boudreaux Knight; four children, Marshall J. Knight, Sr., Miriam McLendon, Fabian Duco, Jr., and Joyce Duco; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Knight was also the brother of the late Celeste Collins and Marshall Knight. Cotton, all of Franklinton; and was the brother of Mrs. Rachel Collins and Roosevelt Cotton, both of New Orleans, Mrs. Dewitt and Nelson Cotton of Bogalusa, and Johnny B. Cotton of Chicago, Illinois. Long Memorial Hospital in Baton Rouge. He was a veteran of the Korean War, who served in the United States Army and was adjutant of the Nicholson American Legion Post Number 38. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ollie Roy Thomas of Baton Rouge; a sister, Mrs. John R. Brumfield of Franklinton; a niece; three nephews; several uncles; and a number of cousins. Other survivors include his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Adams of Franklinton and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Roy Magee of the Oak Grove community; his great-grandmothers, Mrs. Essie Addison of Enon and Mrs. Odessa Magee of Oak Grove; and his great-great-grandmother, Mrs. Bessie Spiker of Bogalusa. He was a retired social worker with the state hospital in Mandeville. He is survived by a foster daughter, Mrs. Patsy Ann McNeese of Franklinton; a brother, Hubert Corkern of Covington; a sister, Mrs. Bessie Corkern Jacobsen of Franklinton; and numerous nieces and nephews. A native of D'Lo, Mississippi, he was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, president of Standard Gravel Company and Green Brothers Gravel Company of Franklinton, and was a former mayor of Franklinton. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jerry Richardson Green of Franklinton; two sons, Johnny Green of Franklinton and Heyward Carter Green of Jackson, Mississippi; a brother, Chester Green of Franklinton; two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Peggy) Reedy of Franklinton and Mrs. Nellie Dawson of Jena, Louisiana; and four grandchildren. A native of Tennessee, he was a retired employee of Southern Truck Lines and had been a resident of Franklinton for the past 20 years. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nellie M. Williams; a daughter, Mrs. Gail Yarborough; and a granddaughter, Ms. Marie Yarborough, all of Franklinton; a brother, Joe Williams of Huntsville, Alabama; and other relatives in Tennessee. Creel February 2, 1985 BOGALUSA - Houston B. Creel, 80, a resident of Route 3, Franklinton, died at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, February 2nd, at the Baton Rouge General Hospital in Baton Rouge. A member of the Bethel Baptist Church, he was a retired employee of the Louisiana Department of Highways and was a dairy farmer. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eula Walters Creel of Franklinton; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Josephine) Hoggatt and Mrs. Gerald (Helen) Welch, both of Franklinton; a son, Charley Creel of Baton Rouge; a brother, Mack Creel of Wilmer, Louisiana; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He served as principal of Enon High School and was a former agriculture teacher at both Enon and Franklinton High Schools. May 1, 1985 SEARCH ON FOR SWIMMER Crews of eight to ten deputies remained on the Pearl River near Angie this Monday morning, searching for a 26-year-old Franklinton man who is assumed to have drowned in the river Saturday. Darryl L. Singleton, 26, of Rt. 2, Franklinton, was assumed to have drowned while attempting to swim across the river Saturday at the location known as Red Bluff, located east and slightly north of Angie. Singleton was reportedly swimming with two other men when he submerged and failed to reach the surface. The Sheriff's Department received a call reporting the accident at 4:30 Saturday afternoon. The sheriff said a crew of eight to ten men were dragging the river during the day, and that a crew of eight would remain at the river during the night, on the assumption that Singleton had drowned. Singleton, who lived in the Poplarhead community, is survived by his wife, Regina Singleton, and a daughter, both of Franklinton; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald W. Harvey, 71, who for years served as City Dogcatcher for the town of Franklinton, died Saturday, June 1st, in the Washington-St. Tammany Hospital in Bogalusa. She attended Centenary College in Shreveport, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church of Franklinton, the Franklinton Garden Club, the Washington Parish Art Association, the Colonial Dames of America, the American Orchid Society, the Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society, and was past president of the Pueblo, Colorado, Service League. She actively served in a leadership capacity in the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America in Pueblo. Mrs. Orman was owner-manager and one of the original partners in Orman and Bickham, Inc., of Franklinton, and was a real estate broker and insurance agent. The wife of the late Frederick Bradley "Fred" Orman, Jr., Mrs. Orman is survived by a son, Frederick Bradley "Brad" Orman, III of Franklinton; three daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Elizabeth) Bickham of Franklinton, Mrs. George (Cathy) Castille and Mary Nell Barringer, both of Baton Rouge; a brother, Olin J. Baird, Jr. of Reno, Nevada; a sister, Mrs. J. W. (Mary) Keene of Shreveport; and six grandchildren. Memorial services were conducted Wednesday, June 5th, at 2 p.m. in the Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert I. Galatas officiating. She is survived by her husband, William Outten of New Orleans; two daughters, Mrs. Bill (Kitty) Simmons and Mrs. Dawn Lane, both of Mt. Hermon; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Schilling of Mt. Hermon; three sisters, Mrs. Donnie (Sue) Burch of Mt. Hermon, Mrs. John (Alluewee) Valliant of St. Francisville, and Mrs. Huey Sullivan of Texas; and one grandchild. Mrs. Mae Carpenter Creel June 6, 1985 BOGALUSA - Mrs. Mae Carpenter Creel, 78, a resident of the Pine Highway, died at 1:05 o'clock Thursday morning, June 6th, at the Riverside Medical Center in Franklinton. She was a member of the Poplarhead Missionary Baptist Church and was the widow of the late Wilson Creel of Franklinton. She is survived by three sons, Harold W. Creel and Danny Creel, both of Franklinton, and Donald Ray Creel of Covington; a brother, Chester Carpenter of Franklinton; two sisters, Mrs. Perry (Ollie) Creel of Franklinton and Mrs. Ernest (Katie) McDonald of Tickfaw; a grandson, Donnie Creel; and three granddaughters, Angel, Debbie and Dawn. She was a retired legal secretary in Franklinton and a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church. The widow of the late Barney Welch of Franklinton, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Joe (Emma Celia) Thornhill and Mrs. Charles (Elizabeth) Martin, both of Bogalusa; a sister, Mrs. James W. (Essie) Bennett of Atlanta, Georgia; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A private family service was held at four o'clock Saturday afternoon, June 8th, in the chapel of the Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton with the Rev. Robert I. Galatas officiating. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Sumrall, Jr. of Franklinton; a brother, Sidney Sumrall of Lake Charles; two sisters, Mrs. Donna Givens and Jessica Sumrall, both of Franklinton; his grandfather, Bill Caves of Bogalusa; two nieces, two nephews, and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
