BOGALUSA DAILY NEWS OBITUARIES - Washington Parish, LA MARY FOLSE GUEPET Died December 31, 2000 (should read December 31, 1999) PENSACOLA, FL - A funeral mass for Mary Folse Guepte, 84, was celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pensacola, FL. A graveside service was held at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery in New Orleans. Mrs. Guepet, a long-time resident of Bogalusa, married Leo Anthony Folse and they had one son, Ronald Leo. They were owners of the Katherine Shop, a ladies apparel store in Bogalusa. After Leo died, Mary married Jacob Guepet, a family friend. They were members of Annunciation Catholic Church and known for their gardening projects. Survivors include her son, Ronald L. Folse and daughter-in-law, Mary Ann; their children, Leo, Dan, Mary Daniels and Diane Yates; stepsons, Mike and Jake Guepet; step-daughter, Gail Ryan and their children; and numerous great-grandchildren. WILMA MOSES LEWIS Died January 29, 2000 (Photograph) VARNADO - The funeral service for Mrs. Wilma Moses Lewis, 90, a life-long resident of Varnado, is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Varnado. She was employed by the Bogalusa City Schools as a cafeteria manager for many years at Columbia Street Elem-entary School and retired in that position. She was a member of the St. Paul AME Church where she served as a member of the choir, President of Stewards Board No.1, Missionaries; East Gate Chapter No. 5 Order of Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliation; Esther Court No. 9 , Heroines of Jericho; Martha Court No. 2, Order of Cyrene; and a great humanitarian to all, with a special love for children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Cryer and Lela Thomas Evans; a sister, Thelma Wiley; brother, W.T. Evans and Milton Evans. Survivors include a faithful and loving husband, Raleigh O. HAMPTON LEA Died February 1, 2000 BATON ROUGE - The funeral service for Hampton Lea, 78, is being held at 10 a.m. today in Welsh Funeral Home, Baton Rouge. Visitation was from 8:30 a.m. to time of service. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. in Magnolia Cemetery in Magnolia, MS. Box 3704, Memphis, TN 38173-9984. Mr. Lea died Tuesday at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was a U.S Army veteran of World War II, a retired salesman with Holsum Bread and a long-time member of South Side Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hampton Sr. and Ella Lea. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mrs. Hampton M. Lea, Baton Rouge; four daughters, Patricia Watson, Bogalusa, Norma Francis, Charlene Melk and Julie Kalluoda, all of Baton Rouge; two sons, Thomas Lea and William Lea, Baton Rouge; a brother Theodore Lea, Canada; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. JERRY H. NEWMAN Died February 1, 2000 TUMWATER, AK. - Funeral services for Jerry Hansford Newman, 70, a nine-year resident of Tumwater, AK, were conducted Feb. 5 at Olympic Funeral Home in Tumwater. Burial followed in the Olympic Memorial Gardens in Tumwater, Olympic Funeral Home directing. Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Feb. 4 at Olympic Funeral Home in Tumwater. Mr. Newman suffered a fatal heart attack Feb. 1, 2000 at his home in Tumwater. Mr. Newman was born May 7, 1929 to Lewis M. and Grace (Martin) Newman of Bush, La. He was married to Maxine V. Mulvihill, who preceded him in death. He married Anna Marie Powell on Feb. 14, 1987. A veteran of the United States Army, he served from 1948 to 1952 and was discharged with the rank of sergeant. He was an Army civil engineer and a lifetime member of American Legion Post 28 in Spenard, AK. Mr. Newman enjoyed traveling, carpentry, gardening and time spent with his family. Mr. Newman was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Newman, and his parents, Louis M. and Grace Newman. He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie Newman, Tumwater; five daughter, Marti L. Truck and Sandra K. McCoy, both residents of Anchorage, AK, Sheryl A. Evers, Eagle River, AK, Susan A. Ingram, Chehalis, AK, and Deborah M. Hollinger, Tumwater; two sons, Jerry W. Newman and David E. LOUIS WILLIAMSON Died February 1, 2000 VICKSBURG, MS - The funeral service for Louis Williamson, 79, is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at First Baptist Church, Vicksburg, MS. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park in Vicksburg. Mr. Williamson died Tuesday at his residence in Vicksburg. A native of Angie, he has been a resident of Vicksburg since 1946. For a number of years he worked as a welder for the U.S. Government. He retired from East Fabricators Inc. of Vicksburg. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vickburg, where he served as a deacon. ALLIE MAE JORDAN SUMRALL Died February 2, 2000 FRANKLINTON - The funeral service for Allie Mae Jordan Sumrall, 84, a resident of the Acy's Creek community, is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow in the chapel of Crain Funeral Home, Eld. Mrs. Sumrall died Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the St. Tammany Parish Hospital, Covington. She was a retired practical nurse and a member of the Lawrence Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie L. Sumrall. LIONEL "DUFFY" BORDEN JR. Died February 6, 2000 (Photograph) HAMMOND - Lionel "Duffy" Borden Jr., age 77, died Sunday while fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. A native of Bogalusa, he was a graduate of Bogalusa High School and Southeastern Louisiana University where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. A veteran of World War II, he served three years in the U.S. Naval Air Force. For 30 years, he was the owner of Hammond Motors, the Ford Motor Co. dealership, and also Delta Marine. He was an avid sportsman and this love took him all over the United States, Canada, Central and South America, the Cayman Islands and other places. He was the son of the late Lionel Borden Sr. and the late Eldora Bennett Borden of Bogalusa. His wife, Vonnie Hasty Borden, a professor at Southeastern Louisiana University, preceded him in death. The performing arts theater at Southeastern, the Vonnie Borden Hunanities Theater, was named in her memory. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Tom (Donna Gay) Anderson of Hammond and Beth Ann Borden of Dallas, TX; five sisters, Barbara Hayden, Anne Bryant and Doris McElveen, all of Bogalusa, Jill McDaniel of Greenwell Springs and Margaret Baumkirschner of Sierra Vista, AZ.; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at the First Presbyterian Church in Hammond today from 6 to 9 p.m. and the funeral service will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Hammond. WILLIE RALPH WALTERS Died February 6, 2000 ALBANY, LA - The funeral service for Willie Ralph Walters, age 65, will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Geisler Funeral Home in Albany. A former resident of Franklinton, he was living in Holden at the time of his death. Visitation will be held today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
